Says it's aware of complaints that in-app payments can allow children to spend money

The US Federal Trade Commission is looking into reports of children blowing their parents' credit cards on mobile social games.
The FTC says it's aware of complaints that in-app payments can allow children to spend money within mobile social games without their parents' permission, and is looking into the issue.

In a letter to Democrat congressman Ed Markey, who had asked about the problems, FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz reveals that the matter is firmly on its radar.

'Children will always find a way to access adult content' study says

Net security firm BitDefender interviewed 1,570 parents from five countries to find out their children’s browsing habits. Using monitoring software, 95 per cent of parents found their children had looked up porn.
Porn access was popular during homework time, with kids accessing porn for the first time at an average age of 11.
A high 97 per cent of parents used programs to block porn sites and monitor their kid’s computer usage, but 12 per cent of teenagers managed to uninstall or circumvent the software.
87 per cent of Mums and Dads claimed they would let their children look for porn on the web once they were 19 years old, while only 62 per cent of parents owned up to accessing adult content themselves.
“BitDefender believes this sends a clear message to parents - it’s more important than ever to take steps to protect children from exposure to sexually explicit materials found on the internet" said BitDefender's Sabina Dactu, author of the study.

    News via http://psx-scene.com/forums/f6/n64-e...st-look-81605/

Our friends over at PS3News are reporting that a Nintendo 64 (N64) is in development for the PS3. While nothing has been released yet, demonstration videos have been posted.

    Quote:
We are a team of 3 guys who have been working on a Nintendo 64 emulator for quite some time now, and we have decided to go out with the news since now our N64 emulator is officially working on the PS3.

We still have a huge load of things to work on, but it's playable and N64 is finally working on the PS3.

What we have done so far:

    * 1 player (keyboard only)
    * We have succeeded to enable gameshark codes
    * Graphics works excellent on most games we have tried; Mario 64, Donkey Kong 64, Ridge Racer 64, Diddy Kong Racer, Mario Kart 64, Banjo Kazooie and 1080 Snowboard.
    * Games we have tried that are jerky (so far): Duke Nukem 64, Doom 64, Hexen 64 and WCW Smackdown 64.

    Issues (we are working on):

    * Audio is not working yet.
    * A user interface and the ability to edit and change files such as controller settings, cheat codes, etc. (We do all this over FTP now).
    * Game menu (we now have to upload one game at the time).
    * PS3 controller, (we now have to use a USB keyboard).
    * Multiplayer.

We have decided to use ps3news and youtube to communicate with you guys, and if you want to help us out, feel free to either email us at [email protected] or PM us on youtube.

Sony's PlayStation Home is two years old. That's a success in itself, but perhaps the service's biggest accomplishment is how successfully it has overcome the initial cynicism and flourished into a money making business.
"From a business point of view, virtual items and microtransactions… it just works," Home’s platform director Peter Edward told Develop.

"We have tens of thousands of items, and they are making money. There are some developers solely working on Home now, which speaks a lot to the success we can create. There are developers making money from virtual items in Home, simple as that.
"But you’ve also got the free to play and freemium model. Sodium, the game by Lockwood, is a great example of that. They offer the first five levels of their game for free, but to get the other 45 you have to buy an item of clothing for your avatar to wear that unlocks that access. They’ve had a massive conversion rate – 25 per cent of players pay up."
However, there is still one obstacle Home is yet to completely overcome – the perception from some that the serif has been a flop. Fortunately it's not a mindset that's widely shared amongst the industry itself.

"I think a lot of the industry understands it – and I think there are a lot of people in the industry who don’t realise how much the others understand it," Edward added.
"So, there are 120 studios using the HDK and making content with it. That’s a huge community already using the platform. Having said that, there is a section of the development community that doesn’t realise. That’s why we’re trying to get the news out there.
"Everybody knows that current-gen flagship console development is not cheap – that’s why mobile and handheld development is so popular right now, the barriers to entry are so much lower. But Home offers an opportunity to get on a console when you have a web/mobile budget. That appeals to indie developers because they can get something on a console for a realistic response and in a good timescale."

RUMOUR WATCH: Claims that the second coming of Apple tabletry is at hand

One online news source has claimed that Apple will reveal its iPad 2 in just one week's time.
All Things Digital says it has confirmation from "multiple sources" that the US tech form is preparing a March 2nd gathering in San Francisco.

There's even talk that Steve Jobs himself will be at hand, despite currently being on a leave of absence due to health issues.
As for the device itself, it's all a guessing game for now but the safe bets point to integrated front and rear cameras and some sort of improved display, though many reckon Apple has abandoned plans to incorporate an iPhone 4 style retina display into the machine.
There's also been plenty of talk about the possible ditching of the front facing 'Home' button, with Apple said to be keen on ditching all physical controls for its future iOS product ranges.

Hundreds of widely eulogised Kinect hacks will “inevitably” have an influence on mainstream game development, a leading studio head has said.
Blitz Game Studios design director John Nash told Develop that the so-called ‘Kinect hacks’ – manipulations of Microsoft’s sophisticated motion controller usually undertaken by hobbyists and academics – has wowed the development community.

“I think the Kinect hack community has leapt on this for the same reason we’ve been singing the device’s virtues for the last 18 months,” he said in a new Develop feature on Kinect manipulation, published today.
“It’s the flexibility, the innovation, the potential for doing genuinely new and creative things with it. The fact that the device itself is software driven has obviously helped that process but some of the hacks we’ve seen have amazed us all,” he added.
Microsoft has officially declined to comment on Kinect hacks, in contrast to the wishes of some senior figures at the company, who are keen to discuss the homebrew phenomenon.

The platform holder has however today confirmed its Kinect for Windows Software Development Kit will be released this spring, free of charge for non-commercial uses. That in itself appears to be an indication that Microsoft wants to encourage innovation and lateral thinking for its new controller.
A commercial version of the Kinect Windows SDK will arrive at a later date, Microsoft said.
Kinect hacks have been demonstrated in their hundreds across the internet. Home-made manipulations of the hardware include a sign-language reader, a virtual invisibility suit and, perhaps as a more practical example for developers to ape, an FPS control system.
But the manipulation of Kinect hacks stretches beyond that of hobbyists and bedroom coders. Patrick Bouffard, a researcher at the University of California, Berkeley's Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences department, has adapted Kinect to provide the eyes for a quadrotor helicopter, which has captured the attention of the world’s media.
Develop has hand-picked five standout Kinect hacks in a new feature, published today.
Nash insisted that a studio like Blitz would ignore such inventions from gamers and enthusiasts “at our peril”.
“It’s easier than it’s been for decades for those at the grass roots level to get their hands dirty and create fun content for their favourite hardware, and we’ve always tried to listen to and engage with that indie community,” he added.
“It’s much easier for them to break down gameplay conventions, and although we have other considerations or restrictions to contend with when we develop big-budget commercial games, I think it’s inevitable that we’ll see the mainstream influenced by some of this work.”
Josh Blake, the founder of the OpenKinect ‘open source community’, reckons the Kinect hack scene has already influenced professional game developers.
“Figuring out how to make these interactions work is a very hard problem. If you look at the first wave of Kinect games, there are couple aspects of the menus and interactions that don't work well and a couple that work really well,” he said.
“I'm sure that mainstream game designers who are working on the next wave of Kinect games have been watching the community closely and have already incorporated some new ideas into their games.”
