Operation Flashpoint: Red River creative director Sion Lenton has told Edge that games focusing on live conflict are inappropriate.

"I, personally, don't want to focus on live conflict. I don't think it's appropriate and I don't think it's tasteful," the Codies man told the mag.

"One of the girls who works here, her nephew was killed by an improvised explosive device [IED] a couple of months ago. So when I hear that, I don't want to be in a ****ing meeting bigging up my IED tech."

EA opted to choose the Afghanistan war as the subject of its recent Medal of Honor reboot. It was a controversial decision that drew a fair degree of criticism, and the publisher subsequently went as far as to remove the Taliban as a playable force in the title's multiplayer mode.

"We are deliberately setting out not to court that controversy, we don't want to go there and it's not a conversation we ever wanted to get into," Lenton added. "At no point did we think that it would be cool to set the game in Helmand or Afghanistan, because there's a war going on there and there are British soldiers dying.

"We're still making a war game, and showing soldiers dying, but I guess [the fiction] is us playing safe. But I don't have a problem with playing safe when it comes to this kind of thing."

Cartridges for Nintendo's ambitious new 3DS handheld may be able to hold a whopping 8GB of data - that's more than an Xbox 360 DVD (6.8GB).

Nintendo won't use all of that space from the off, however, and is reported by a Taiwanese website (via Kotaku) to be enforcing a limit of 2GB.

DS cartridges currently hold only 512MB of data; they're ants in comparison.

Nintendo UK had this to say to Eurogamer: "We've not officially announced anything on this so it's rumour and speculation - so we won't comment on it right now."

The 3DS arrives in Europe and the US in March 2011. Japan plays first from 26th February.

An exact price hasn't been nailed down but Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata went on record in Japan citing a 25,000 Yen figure (£190). That's fair, he later defended, because you don't need any extra kit - such as a 3D telly or 3D glasses - in order to fully enjoy the 3DS.

It's oftentimes hard to gauge the proliferation of electronic devices into everyday life while looking at them from our little bubble of early adopter enthusiasm. A much better vantage point for these things can be provided from the arms of government, among the most change-resistant places on any planet, and American legislators are letting us know that tablets, not the children, are our future. Texas Representative Henry Cuellar recently took the House of Representatives floor with an iPad in tow, which broke with the chamber's etiquette if not its rules. He's not alone, however, in hoping that the House dispenses with its Omega Man-style prejudice against electronics and permits their widespread use by Representatives. If nothing else, distributing bills of law electronically should make a nice dent in the "multimillion" dollar budget currently set aside annually for printing. Let's make it happen, guys.

Microsoft offer free console hit to help boost sales for new mobile platform.
US consumers who purchase any new Windows Phone 7 will receive a free Xbox 360 game.
Microsoft launched the promotion to help drive sales for its new mobile operating system, which launched last month. So far, sales have been slow.
As part of the deal, gamers can choose from one of four titles: Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, Fable III or Halo: Reach.
The offer is available with any Windows Phone 7 device, with Microsoft’s official webpage highlighting the Samsung Focus and HTC HD7.
It also points US consumers towards the Buy One Get One Free promotions currently running at AT&T and T-Mobile.

Microsoft's Kinect team is reportedly working "very hard" to potentially quadruple the accuracy of Kinect.

The platform holder hopes that the motion-sensing peripheral will soon be able to detect finger movement and hand rotation, according to Eurogamer.

The depth sensor used by Kinect is currently set at a 30 frames per second limit and a 320x240 resolution limit, but a firmware update could boost the resolution to 640x480, the site suggests.

Microsoft has not confirmed the accuracy of the report.

Last month, Sony Move engineer Anton Mikhailov claimed the fast-selling Kinect is 'mostly technical problems'.
