The studio behind a controversial Iraq war game still hopes to bring the project to market despite it already having caused a vehement public backlash and a cancelled publishing deal.
Six Days in Fallujah, developed by US independent Atomic Games, was according to the studio an attempt to engage in serious subject matter through the medium of video games. Its subject matter was the Second Battle of Fallujah, a conflict that took place in Iraq six years ago and saw the deaths of numerous US Marines, Iraqi insurgents, and local civilians.
The announcement of the project sparked outcry for apparently trying to stir controversy at the expense of serving armed forces.
Konami dropped its publishing deal, and Atomic Games had to shed staff.
Yet the developer’s president, Peter Tamte, still believes Six Days in Fallujah can restore its image, and describes the code as an “opportunity for the world to experience the true stories”.

In an interview with news site VG247, Tamte appeared to still be at odds with popular opinion that the game is of poor taste.
He brought the issue into a wider debate of whether videogames can be seen as credibile and legitimate forms of story-telling – a discussion which he believes Six Days would have added to.
He asked if games were “just high-tech toymakers, or media companies capable of producing content that is as relevant as movies, music and television?”
Of the project, Tamte said the studio “needs the funding to complete it.”
“I really hope it’s not finished,” he added.
The battle at Fallujah resulted in extensive damage to residences, mosques, city services, and businesses.
Tamte made clear his view that censoring the title would impact on its legitimacy.
“Six Days takes place during the most relevant event of an entire generation,” he said.
“Some people suggested, ‘Why not just make it Six Days in Bullcrapistan?’ We could have done that, but that would have taken away one of the reasons why we made the game, which was to recreate the specific stories of some people who are our heroes – I can’t do that in Bullcrapistan because it loses its context.”
He added: “My frustration with [the situation] has grown over time, if that’s even possible. The retail sales of videogames in the US have declines in the last two years.
“That may be partly because of the economy, but it’s also because the games industry has stopped creating anything new, and consumers are starting to say, ‘Hey, what you’re selling – I’m not buying.’ I have conversations with senior people at publishers all across the world, and they’re telling me that videogames are trivial, and we’re going to keep making trivial games. Someone needs to slap them on the side of the head and say, ‘Hey, guys, sales are going down. Something is wrong.’
“We should experiment with new categories of games. That’s what we wanted to do [with Six Days]. It has to be made into a purely commercial argument, ignoring all the arguments about the importance of the medium, and the things that we can do for consumers that can’t be done via passive forms of entertainment – because most of the publishers are interesting in the economic argument.”
Elsewhere in the interview with VG247, Tamte lifts the lid on the studio’s upcoming self-published and download-only multiplayer shooter, Breach.

StarCraft studio Blizzard has confirmed it is experimenting with converting its Diablo hack'n'slash series to console.

"We're exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles and are currently looking to fill a few senior console-related positions on the Diablo III team," the company revealed on one of its community blogs.

"As we've said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console platform, and we're interested in seeing what talent out there might be interested in such a project."

Despite making this statement so publicly, the famously information-careful developer refuted that this was a confirmation that the much-loved RPG will see a console conversion.

"Please note that this is not an announcement of a console title. We are first and foremost developing Diablo III for Windows and Mac PCs and don't intend to allow any possibility of a console interpretation to delay or affect the release of the game."

It was also established this morning that Blizzard's most recent title, StarCraft II, has been pirated an estimated 2.3 million times via Bittorrent.

P2P monitoring site TorrentFreak reports that, with 15.77 Petabytes shifted, StarCraft II has transferred more data than any other torrent in history.

The site speculates, however, that Blizzard's own torrent tracker for legitimately purchased download copies of the game has moved even more data.

Rovio CEO Peter Vesterbacka has confirmed that iPhone and Android smash hit Angry Birds will be coming to PSN, XBLA and Wii 'for starters' at the inaugural Virtual Goods Summit in London.

While Vesterbacka did not go into detail, he responded to an audience question on the matter with "Yes, we're doing PSN, Xbox and Wii. For starters."

The CEO also put paid to rumours of a direct sequel, but indicated that a new game is in the pipeline which will tell the story of the game's piggy enemies, as well as a multiplayer SKU which will operate in a similar fashion to "old school Worms."

The game has seen huge success on both iPhone and Android platforms, selling two million copies on the Google OS in just five days, while the Halloween special edition leapt to number one in the App store charts in the US and UK within 24 hours.

The developer recently clarified that its relationship with publisher Chillingo, which published Angry Birds and Cut the Rope, would not continue after EA acquired Chillingo last month.

Vesterbacka told TechCrunch that "you don't need publishers".

The UK games market has seen its biggest grossing sales week ever, according to UKIE, helped in no small measure by the phenomenal retail performance of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Treyarch's shooter sold 1.4 million copies in the UK on its first day alone.

UKIE revealed the game saw 2 million sales over its first five days, bringing in an estimated £81.9 million. This broke Modern Warfare 2's first-week sales records of 1.8 million and £67.4 million by 13 and 21 per cent respectively.

Microsoft's Kinect was the other big news in the market last week, releasing on 10 November in a huge, $500 million marketing push by Microsoft for consumer's Christmas cash.

The impact on the charts was mixed, with Kinect Sports the highest charting Kinect title, entering at fourth. The next best-selling Kinect title was Dance Central at 13. No figures were given for Kinect Adventures, the game bundled with the Kinect hardware.

"The video games and interactive entertainment industry has already seen a great start to quarter 4 2010 and the success of Call of Duty: Black Ops and Microsoft's Kinect adds to this," said UKIE director Michael Rawlinson.

"The positive sales figures of titles like Call of Duty: Black Ops, new hardware launches like Kinect, the emergence of casual/mobile games like Angry Birds and Cut the Rope and social networking games such as Farmville show that video games and other forms of interactive entertainment continue to be played by more people than ever – with 1 in 3 people in the UK now being gamers."

"Given the huge audiences for games on all formats, 2010 has been a year of unprecedented activity and focus. And with more video games than ever before being played, on an ever growing range of games consoles, PCs, mobile phones, mobile devices and internet enabled TVs, the industry has widened beyond all expectations and will continue to expand exponentially in 2011."

The week also saw Fable III drop dramatically down the chart, slipping to sixteenth from third after just one week at number one the week prior to that. Last week's number one, Football Manager 2011, slips to fifth while FIFA 11 holds on to second.

    Last Week This Week Title
New Entry 1 Call of Duty: Black Ops
    2 2 FIFA 11

A trial date has been set for Ohio motion control firm Motiva's second patent infringement case against Nintendo.

The company claims that the Wii treads on the toes of its 2005 patents for a "human movement measurement system," which cover devices including a wireless handheld controller.

Motiva also filed charges against Nintendo in 2008, which resulted in a court-ordered re-examination of the patents in question and the closure of the case.

The new case is due an initial determination of November 4 next year, reports the ITC, with a final decision by March 2012.

Motiva's goal is a permanent cease and desist order against Nintendo of America.

Despite holding the disputed patents, Motiva has yet to release to market any product based on them.

Amazon's UK arm is to introduce Black Friday, the annual US discount shopping day, to Britain.

Among the temporary price cuts on offer will be 60 per cent off the RRP for as-yet unspecified Wii and Xbox 360 console SKUs.

"For many years, shoppers in the US have enjoyed massive savings on great products as a result of the 'Black Friday' phenomenon," said Brian McBride, managing director of Amazon.co.uk.

"Amazon is always looking to offer exceptional value for money, especially in the run up to Christmas, and will replicate that activity for the benefit of all customers here in the UK."

A series of deals will run for five days, starting on Monday November 22.

Black Friday, which falls on the fourth Friday of every November, has been an important calendar date for US retailers. In 2009, it brought in over $10 billion.
