A joint research group called the U-Decide Initiative has released a preliminary report based on gamer surveys which suggests that 3D glasses are not viewed as an impediment to the adoption of 3D in gaming.
Instead the study found that 80 per cent of gamers surveyed were willing to wear glasses to play games and watch 3D video content. The survey shows continued interest in glasses-free 3D but the willingness to play games in 3D increased just 12 per cent when considering 3D technology without the need for stereoscopic glasses.
This findings of the report contrasts with those released by market research outfit Interpret which said that 46 per cent of consumers didn't want to wear 3D glasses and just 13 per cent were “in the market to purchase a new HDTV.”
Interpret did, however, focus on main stream 3D TV adoption while the U-Decide initiative is aimed at videogaming. Even so, U-Decide also shows a low 20 per cent of users were prepared to use 3D glasses when watching “traditional broadcasting” rising massively to 61 per cent for glasses-free technology. In this respect both Interpret and U-Decide's findings point to consumers shunning 3D glasses for casual content.
The U-Decide initiative aims to provide a realistic indication as to consumer attitudes towards 3D technology, backed by The S-3D Gaming Alliance (S3DGA) comprised of a number of firms firms including Panasonic, Electronic Arts and Ubisoft.

The findings of the report strongly suggest that consumers consider 3D worthwhile, and particularly worth putting up with stereoscopic 3D glasses, for immersion activities such as playing games and watching movies.
Of those looking to buy a new HDTV, 3D is considered a “high interest” feature for 57 per cent of respondents while 19 per cent were neutral, and 24 per cent expressed a low interest in 3D. With 3D features costing comparatively little, it seems that HDTV manufacturers would be unlikely to want to provide any excuse to switch to another brand or model by not offering the technology.

Exciting crossover 3DS game Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright is as of right now a Japan-only title, but with gamers' support it could come to the West, Capcom's said.

"The game has only been announced for Japan," wrote Capcom's jgonzo in a blog post.

"Want it available outside of Japan? Shout out in the comments! The more comments we get for this blog post, the better!

"Let's show Capcom Japan that there's definite interest in Europe and North America!"

Meanwhile, titbits of information have been revealed about the enticing game.

Professor Layton VS Phoenix Wright is a tentative title. It's described as a "puzzle-solving courtroom adventure", and its release date is to be determined.

In the game, Wright and Layton and other major characters from both series will be transported to a surreal medieval city called Labyrinth City where they must work together to solve contradiction-filled puzzles in order to solve the larger mystery at hand.

Did you know the Ace Attorney series has sold 3.9 million units worldwide? Now you do. Capcom reckons it's one of its "strongest intellectual properties".

Professor Layton, though, has sold a whopping 9.5 million units worldwide since the first title in the series went on sale in February 2007.

"We feel that by drawing upon the strengths of both series, this collaboration will bring new, casual game players to the adventure game genre and into the world of gaming in general while strengthening the value of the two brands overall," Capcom said.

Did EA's Medal of Honor make more money at launch than Activision's last Call of Duty game, Modern Warfare 2? In a word, no. More than Halo: Reach? No.

EA boss John Riccitiello told Fox News (via IndustryGamers) that his new war game made $100 million during its opening week. That should be close to recouping development costs.

We already knew that the game had shifted a not-to-be-sniffed-at 1.5 million copies in five days.

Activision's record breaking Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 made $310 million from UK and US sales in just 24 hours.

Halo: Reach became Microsoft's biggest ever release this September, and generated $200 million from one platform in one day.

Scores trended slightly lower than expected (although Eurogamer awarded a handsome 8/10) and forced EA to issue a public defence of the game and MOH series.

"This is a marathon not a sprint - today's Medal of Honor launch represents a step forward in that race," EA said, praising the first attempt at its MOH revival.

Medal of Honor was released last Friday and raced to the top of the UK all-formats chart. Whether the Danger Close Games and DICE-developed game can hold on for a second week we'll have to wait and see - Eurogamer deputy editor Ellie Gibson doesn't think it will.

Wondering which platform to buy Medal of Honor on? Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog faced them off against each other and declared a winner.

The original PlayStation version of Twisted Metal could be getting a re-release under the PSone Classics brand, according to an Entertainment Software Ratings Board listing.

The ESRB entry, spotted by Joystiq, merely states that Sony's Twisted Metal has been given a Teen rating for release on PlayStation 3 and PSP. No release date or further information is offered.

David Jaffe's bonkers action racer debuted on the PlayStation back in 1995.

A new entry in the series was announced at E3 this year, due for release on PlayStation 3 in 2011.

Microsoft's Phil Spencer has put his cards firmly on the table with a stinging yet indirect assault on Sony's 3D business model, telling press that current 3D technology isn't mainstream enough to become successful.

Speaking to CNN, Spencer made it clear that he doesn't believe that expensive 3D televisions and glasses will break the 3D market in the home, although he did admit to liking the glasses-less concept of Nintendo's 3DS.

"For better or for worse, people just don't really have TVs in their house right now that are going to do 3D in a way that's going to work," Spencer told CNN. "I like the 3DS, you don't have to wear the glasses."

Spencer's views seem to be firmly focused on upsetting the plans of Sony, who have invested heavily in the 3D market with films, PS3 3D support and 3D televisions themselves.

"As a corporate mandate, I don't need to sell you a new TV, that's not part of my business model. Other companies maybe have that part of their business model. I don't."

Recent NPD figures showed a significant increase in sales for the Xbox 360 compared to the same month for last year, whilst PS3 figures were down considerably. The market penetration of 3D televisions has been far lower than many interested parties had predicted.

Microsoft's only console experience with 3D so far has been the stereoscopic 3D release of Batman: Arkham Asylum as part of a game of the year special edition.

"It felt a little more like a science experiment than something that's going to go touch millions of people," Spencer remarked in reference to Arkham. "Clearly, we're not going to ignore 3D. I think it is something that will play a role in entertainment."

A study conducted by the University of Colorado Denver Business School has revealed that games can be highly effective as training tools.

The study found that those trained with games perform better, retain information longer and have a higher skills level than those taught using less interactive methods.

"Companies have been designing video games for employees for years but so far it has all been done on a hunch," said Traci Sitzmann, assistant professor of management at Colorado Uni. "They suspected the games helped but they could never actually prove it."

Sitzmann's methodology consisted of spending over a year examining 65 studies and data from 6,476 trainees - and probably playing countless hours of Professor Layton.

She found that those using video games had an 11 per cent higher factual knowledge level, a 14 per cent higher skill-based knowledge level and a nine per cent higher retention rate than trainees in other groups.

"Remember the video game is a tool and not a substitute for training," Sitzmann added. "But if you can engage your employee with the video game, you will likely get a well-trained worker."

A recent study published in medical journal Pediatrics claimed that playing games increased the risk of developing mental problems. Obviously they weren't playing the right games.

Fallout: New Vegas is so good it'll make your head spin, quite literally in the case of Doc Mitchell.

The first character you meet in New Vegas can't control his head, which spins around while he talks, before he floats around the room while his bonce flops down to chest level.

While that would make for an amazing opening, it's definitely not how the game's intro is supposed to play out - check our walkthrough of the first 20 minutes of New Vegas to see how it's supposed to be.

HP has released details of the firm's anticipated relaunch of the Palm brand with the new Palm Pre 2 smartphone powered by a revamped webOS 2.0.
The firm called the webOS 2.0 smartphone operating system the most "significant update to webOS ever", saying that the new version "ratchets up a few notches" the set of features from previous versions. One of the major new features is a multitasking interface called Stacks which, the company said, automatically groups related 'cards' together in stacks in order to make it easier to switch between many applications.
"With webOS 2.0, we're advancing the innovations we introduced 16 months ago, expanding the features that make webOS great for consumers, enterprises and developers," said HP's Palm business unit boss Jon Rubinstein. "We've made tremendous strides since the platform launched, and now we're taking our biggest leap forward with powerful new features that make it easier to get more things done with your webOS device."
Also coming in webOS 2.0 is a feature called Just Type which launches appropriate applications such as composing an email, writing a message or searching the web without needing to move to an appropriate application first. The system will be made available for developers to hook into in order to enhance the Just Typle functionality.
HP Synergy is the name given to a new software aggregation hub in webOS 2.0 which aims to combine a range of accounts such as Microsoft Exchange, Facebook and Google, presenting them through a common front end interface.

The Palm Pre 2 phone now includes a processor clocked at one gigahertz, similar to the current grop of high-end smartphones and rather more than the previous Pre offering. The new Pre 2 will also have a slide-out keyboard, 3.1-inch "vivid touchscreen" and 16GB of onboard memory.
The Palm Pre 2 will appear first on the French network SFR, as early as this Friday, while listed as the "coming months" for the US. The company will also be making available an unlocked version to run on any network although the carrier of choice for subsidized contracts in the US and Canada is Verizon.
