The most recent PlayStation 3 firmware update has disabled certain third-party pads, USB devices and PS2 to PS3 controller converters, users have claimed.

Scores of people have posted on Sony's official message boards that their third party add-ons are no longer working.

When the Blu-ray 3D-friendly firmware update went live earlier this week, Sony explained, "SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.

"SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products."

However, there have been a number of complaints that some above-board MadCatz pads and Guitar Hero accessories no longer work either.

We've asked Sony for an explanation and will update when it gets back to us.

Microsoft's launched a competition that gives you the opportunity to play motion-sensing add-on Kinect in your hometown before it's released.

Microsoft wants you to tell it why you deserve the honour of having Kinect brought to your town, school, village, road, or even your house over on its Facebook site.

The three "most compelling and creative" reasons will win. You've got until 6th October to register your vote.

Who decides the winner? Microsoft UK & Ireland's director of Xbox and entertainment Stephen McGill, executive producer of technology & communications at Rare Studios Nick Burton and, wait for it, singer and model Sophie Ellis Bextor.

Sophie Ellis Bextor took time out from her busy schedule murdering the dancefloor to say: "I'm really excited to be announcing 'Kinect Comes to You', where we're giving someone the chance to experience Kinect, before it hits the shops. Whoever wins this opportunity I'm sure, like me, will have a great time experiencing the amazing world of Kinect!"

Kinect's due out in the UK on 10th November.

60 per cent of women who play games would not call themselves gamers, according to a new survey commissioned by Diner Dash developer/publisher PlayFirst.

The survey of 2075 Americans, carried out by Frank N. Magid Associates, claimed that 40 per cent of men would "strongly agree" that they were gamers (with that statement being ranked 5 on a 1 to 5 scale).

The report also asserted that, regardless of whatever label they might give themselves, two in every three Americans play games, with one in three apparently playing casual games (on computers or phones) regularly.

The survey was conducted purely online, PlayFirst explained to GamesIndustry.biz, thus perhaps skewing results towards a tech-acclimatised audience, but it was sent to a general population rather than specifically gamers.

80 per cent of those who claimed to be games players said they preferred gaming to the likes of movies, music or reading.

The survey's results also posited that while 90 per cent of women listed 'entertaining' as their primary requirement for a game, the majority response (at 79 per cent) for men was 'challenging to finish.'

"The face of gaming is evolving to a broader group more representative of the overall population,""said Magid's Mike Vorhaus. "Gaming is a cross-generational, cross-platform activity that's ubiquitous, yet requires unique and targeted experiences to be successful.

"Different groups value different things on different platforms, and by honing in on those differences, a multi-platform publisher can further optimize its product strategy."

87 per cent of those identified as gamers had recently played on PC or Mac, 50 per cent on Facebook and 28 per cent on smartphones.

The report asserted a trend towards multi-platform gaming, having surmised that 52 per cent play on at least two of those three platforms, and some 14 per cent all three.

While console-only players were screened out of the report due to its focus on casual games, PlayFirst revealed, 40 per cent of those who were deemed qualified had played a console game in the last week.

Warning: Counterfeit and Unlicensed PlayStation®3 Wireless Controller (Recommendation: use only genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controller)

Counterfeit PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, which are practically identical in appearance to genuine PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers, have been discovered in the market. SCEA advises consumers to be cautious when buying PlayStation®3 Wireless Controllers from uncertain sources as the quality, reliability and safety of counterfeit products is uncertain, and in some cases, may be dangerous. It is possible that some counterfeit product may ignite or explode, resulting in injury or damage to the user, your PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system, or other property. Moreover, SCEA does not support continued functionality of counterfeit or unlicensed controllers in system software updates and these devices may cease to function in the future because of system software updates.

SCE and its affiliated companies disclaim all liability for any loss or damage suffered by you or any third party through the use of counterfeit or unlicensed products.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support.

In addition to counterfeit controllers, if you have upgraded to the new 3.50 firmware to get the 3D Blu-Ray playback, don't be surprised if your unofficial USB devices no longer work. Sony failed to mention that they also prevented majority of 3rd party peripherals to not work unless its licensed Sony products.

Members from the Official PlayStation forum have started a list of what USB devices do not work. I've heard Bannco's FRAGnStein was also one of them that did not work but Bannco released a new firmware update for the controller to make it work again. But not all 3rd party devices are upgradeable with a simple flash of a firmware.

What's next Sony? You're going to remove online play so people can't cheat or trash talk? I hope this wasnt intentional as 3rd party manufacturers will be very upset about this.

    *UPDATE*
We've been informed by XCM that their PS3 products such as their XCM XFPS Fire Light Gun, Cross Battle Adapter 2.0, RateUp Adapter and XFPS Force 4.0, all work on 3.50 firmware.

    News via http://hackmii.com/2010/09/insert-startup-disc/

Those of you who have been reading this blog for a year or two know that I’ve been fascinated with figuring out how Wiis are made at the factory. The driving reason is that if we can figure out how Wiis with blank flash chip are programmed at the factory, we could possibly wipe bricked Wiis and fix them.

Well, we never found that, but occasionally some hint poke up. Nintendo has gone out of their way to call out a specific message — Insert Startup Disc — and has declared that there is a problem with the “operating system” and let it be known that they very badly want to replace it. As with things like the iOS “diagnostic mode”, this generally means that a unit escaped from the factory without having completed all testing and programming steps. This can give a rare glimpse into factory steps normally concealed from us.

Searching online for information about this has been rather frustrating. Occasional articles from late 2006 show in-store kiosks displaying a blurry “Insert startup disk” message. A few private conversations have alluded to the fact that the few thousand Wiis that were sent to game stores with this disc, but nobody has been able to cough up a disc for me to examine (or at least an image of one!).

Fortunately, an alert member of assemblergames caught an auction on eBay for a broken Wii displaying our mysterious error message. (Thanks Paul!) He bought it and sent it to me to look at, and here are my findings.

    Background
Stepping back a moment, the reason that this is strange is that the very lowest levels of the system — boot1, boot2 — can’t even talk to the DVD drive or the video output. IOS can talk to the DVD drive, but only at a very low level, and only in response to IPC from the PPC — there’s no way for the system to bootstrap itself with a blank flash, or with boot1 and boot2. You absolutely need PPC code running, and if you have that running, you might as well have the whole system menu running. It also probably means you have to either have a boot2 that can read an unencrypted NAND filesystem, or it means you have to program each chip individually with a key from a database using a flash programmer before soldering it down — an expensive and complicated operation, in comparison to flashing one image to all chips or programming a unit with test pads.

The only possible reason I could imagine for doing this would be that the flashing process has a long lead time — longer than pressing DVDs — and Nintendo therefore was able to ship these kiosk Wiis earlier by including a stub of a system menu that could install updates, and then making a few thousand in this state and shipping them out with these discs. Let’s take a look at Paul’s Wii.

According to Jeffrey Fidacaro, an analyst with Susquehanna Financial Group, individuals within Apple's overseas supply chain report that the company will begin assembling its first round of CDMA iPhones in December. The suppliers in question tell Fidacaro that Apple could build as many as three million CDMA iPhones before January 1, 2011.

If such ambitious plans materialize, Apple Insider notes that total GSM and CDMA iPhone production for the quarter would come in at around 22 million. Fidacaro, however, predicts that Apple will sell just under 12 million iPhones in the fourth quarter of the company's fiscal 2010. "We expect the September 25 launch of iPhone in China and Apple's target of making the iPhone available in 88 countries by month end to aid results in 4QFY10," he noted. "Our checks show that Apple is still struggling with yields on the mass production of the white iPhone 4."
