Digital software prices slashed ahead of key weekend at UK retail

A routine Bank Holiday sale or an effort to encourage struggling hardware sales – call it what you want, but PSPgo owners old and new will be greeted with some significant discounts the next time they log into the PSN Store.
Several high-profile titles have seen their prices slashed on the service, including the likes of God of War (down from £14.99 to £7.99), GTA Chinatown Wars (£29.99 to £14.99), FIFA 10 (£29.99 to £15.99), Tekken 6 (£31.99 to £15.99) Need for Speed: Shift (£29.99 to £15.99) and Gran Turismo (£17.99 to £13.99).
Permanent price reduction have also been made to a number of games, including many from EA, such as Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10 which drops from £29.99 to £15.99.
One of the main criticisms of the PSPgo to date has been the price of its software downloads, which compared to those available on the High Street – and particularly to pre-owned prices – are generally much higher.
Whether the price cuts can deliver the sort of hardware sales boost all platform holders look for over a Bank Holiday weekend in the UK is the obvious question to ask.

Insurance firm Swiftcover says its iPhone app has helped two hikers find each other in snowbound Swedish mountains after they became separated.
The app, which is called Stuck, uses geo-location tech to allow people to post a Twitter-style message about their locations or situations. This info is then uploaded to a map of the world with a time stamp.
Other iPhone users can then click on the stamp and, using Google maps, zoom in to locate the person who posted the Stuck.
So when Nico Vittorio and Paul Alonso became separated in the Sarek National Park region of Sweden they pair used Stuck’s ‘Near-Me’ function – which flags up other users nearby – to locate each other, tracking their progress until their paths met.
The app was developed by swiftcover.com’s innovation lab and has been downloaded 10,000 times since it was launched in January.

Social games platform provider Scoreloop has announced an update to its Core Social SDK, allowing developers and publishers to offer downloadable content and in-game currencies.
Two games are already making use of the new features: Parachute Panic HD and Astro Ranch.
Of course, developers can already offer this stuff using Apple's own in-app payments API. The key to Scoreloop's SDK is whether it makes this easier for them.
"This is exactly what they've been looking for: a set of creative tools that improve the visibility of their games, connect their users for increased engagement and drive revenues through exposure to millions of users," says CEO Marc Gumpinger.
In Parachute Panic's case, developer FDG Entertainment is offering unlockable themes for players who challenge their friends, along with an in-game currency.

Digital Chocolate is the latest iPhone games publisher to experiment with a freemium pricing model, in a new version of its Fantasy Warrior franchise. Fantasy Warrior Legends is the company's first freemium title for iPhone, although it's long had a strategy of releasing free Lite demos alongside its paid games on the App Store.
The game, an RPG, sees players battling orcs, skeletons and the like in forests and dungeons. Players require gems to power their weapons and armour, which is where the freemium element comes in - they can buy more gems using in-app payments.
The game also uses Aurora Feint's OpenFeint social platform to provide online high-scores and achievements.

Fantasy Warrior Legends follows in the footsteps of other freemium iPhone games, including Eliminate Pro, Skies of Glory and We Rule.

The iPad is now supported on Stonetrip’s ShiVa 3D engine license. The engine now supports all major available platforms under one license.
“On March 18th we added Android development capabilities to ShiVa 3D and today we’re expanding the development capabilities again for our users by adding iPad development capabilities and support,” said Stonetrip CEO Philip Belhassen.
“The market is very competitive and having powerful tools early gives developers the opportunity to compete and have a first mover advantage on emerging platforms. We will continue to add additional platforms under our single license per developer strategy.”

The app provides most of the features from the PC version of the company's service and gives iPhone users access to the entire music library on the go.
In Norway the WiMP streaming music service is provided by Aspiro and Platekompaniet in cooperation with Telenor.
It's already available for PC, Mac, Linux and Android-based handsets, giving users unlimited access to music for 99 kroner a month.
Users can save their favourites and playlists, and share with their friends via Facebook or Twitter.
Per Einar Dybvik, Head of Aspiro Music, said: "In our experience, the average processing time at Apple is a couple of weeks. We believe we have followed all the guidelines for the AppStore, so we hope that the client thus can be available to our customers shortly."

he evidence is mounting that Microsoft is preparing a brand new redesigned version of its console

This one is simply not going away – new pictures from Dutch site GameKings, as spotted by VG247, pertain to be of the still unconfirmed Xbox 360 Slim.
Apparently going under the codename Napoleon, the new hardware sticks very much to the aesthetic of the current machine, though looks to be considerably smaller than the current machine.
There is, of course, the possibility that the machine pictured is nothing other than the Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive.
The rumours come not long after snaps appeared of what appeared to be the innards of the new machine.
If true it will be the first time Microsoft has completely overhauled an Xbox design – previously it has stuck just to internal tweaking.

All signs point to a reveal at E3 this June, though the official word until now has been that Microsoft “does not comment on rumour and speculation”.

BioWare’s MMO Star Wars: The Old Republic is being lined up for a release on Xbox 360 – that’s the claim of VG247, which reports to have obtained a GAME release schedule detailing a host of unreleased announcements.
The information points to a 2011 TBC release for the as-of-yet unannounced console SKU, which coincides with the date currently pencilled in for the PC version.
Note though that the leaked GAME Xbox 360 release schedule also contains a couple of very dubious entries, including a version of Ubisoft’s failed PS3 FPS Haze some time this year, a Midway-credited This Is Vegas and Activision’s cancelled World in Conflict.
There are a few very interesting dates on the document, though, including Activision’s James Bond Racing (apparently scheduled for October), a September 24th release date for both Konami’s Metal Gear Solid: Rising and EA’s Crysis 2, as well as an October date for Call of Duty 7.
There are two real questions here. Firstly, is the document legitimate? Yes, probably. Secondly, is the information reliable? Going by the constantly updated release schedules MCV receives, quite possibly not.

The iPad has sold over 300,000 units in its first day on sale, according to Apple figures.

The portable touch screen device went on sale in US shops on Saturday, April 3 and, by midnight, had reached the 300k mark.

Over one million iPad apps were downloaded from the App Store throughout the day, and 250,000 ebooks from the iBookstore were purchased.

"It feels great to have the iPad launched into the world - it's going to be a game changer," said Apple CEO Steve Jobs. "iPad users, on average, downloaded more than three apps and close to one book within hours of unpacking their new iPad."

As the device launched, Unity Technologies announced the release of development platform iPhone 1.7, which comes with iPad deployment for both Unity iPhone Basic and Unity iPhone Advanced and iPad Simulator support.

According to Unity, more than 15 Unity-authored iPad specific games have launched on the App Store already, including three games from Infinite Dreams.

"We were able to get our games submitted and accepted to the iPad App Store without ever seeing hardware," said Seweryn Panczyniak, lead programmer at Infinite Dreams. "Unity is a wonderful piece of software that let us do things fast and with minimum level of frustration and maximum level of creativity."

Gameloft had eight gaming apps ready for the iPad upon its release, including NOVA and Asphalt 5.

"With iPhone and iPod touch, Apple changed the way consumers perceive and interact with their devices and created a revolutionary era for the mobile gaming industry," said Michel Guillemot, president of Gameloft. "We are taking full advantage of all the new possibilities and features iPad is bringing to developers with games that will once again transform the digital gaming experience."

The UK is expected to see the release of the iPad at the end of April, when both the Wi-Fi and 3G versions on the device will reach its shores.
