Sony fans should not expect a 3D PSP announcement anytime soon. In an interview with IGN, SCEA's Director of Hardware and Marketing John Koller said the company is only focusing on the 3D console space right now.

"Our focus on 3D right now is on the console," he said. "There's a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we're going to concentrate our efforts there."

Koller also questioned today's announcement of the Nintendo 3DS, saying he wasn't sure if there is a market for 3D handheld gaming with a younger audience.

"I think it remains to be seen where Nintendo goes with 3D on a portable," he added. "Having been in the portable space for quite awhile, I think it's an interesting move but one I'd like to see where they go from a demographic standpoint. 8 and 9 year-olds playing 3D is a little bit of a stretch given where some of our research is right now."

Former Sony Computer Entertainment head Ken Kutaragi (above) may not be all that happy about how his PlayStation 3 is officially the heaviest game console ever released. But there's another statistic that he'd likely be more delighted to hear: According to a survey of Famitsu magazine's review scores, the PS3 has the highest-quality game library out of any console currently in the marketplace.

According to figures released in the current issue, 77 out of the 171 PS3 games Famitsu has reviewed as of the end of 2009 received a total score of 32/40 or greater, qualifying it for a Gold award. This means that 45.05% of the PS3's library in Japan is "gold" -- according to Famitsu's review staff, anyway.

This puts the PS3 just slightly ahead of the Xbox 360 percentage-wise -- over in Japan, 104 out of 240 360 titles reviewed got gold awards, 43.33% of the library. The good news continues in the portable realm, with 23.2 percent of PSP titles going gold versus 17.14% of Nintendo DS releases.

Here's a complete rundown of Famitsu gold awards divided by console. Note that Famitsu got a lot less stingy with review scores around the turn of the century, which is why the classic systems have far fewer 32-point-or-greater titles.

    1. PlayStation 3 (77/171, 45.03%)
    2. Xbox 360 (104/240, 43.33%)
    3. GameCube (87/240, 36.25%)
    4. PSP (90/388, 23.20%)
    5. Xbox (40/185, 21.62%)
    6. Nintendo 64 (38/183, 20.77%)
    7. PlayStation 2 (393/1997, 19.68%)
    8. Wii (50/257, 19.46%)
    9. Nintendo DS (152/887, 17.14%)
    10. Dreamcast (62/407, 15.23%)
    11. Game Boy Advance (90/618, 14.56%)
    12. Sega Saturn (52/930, 5.59%)
    13. PlayStation (130/2645, 4.93%)
    14. Super NES (55/1407, 3.90%)
    15. NES (34/955, 3.56%)
    16. PC Engine (22/628, 3.5%)
    17. Genesis (11/534, 2.06%)
    18. Game Boy (15/1071, 1.40%)

The PlayStation Portable is celebrating its fifth birthday (in the US at least). Throughout its lifetime it has sold 17m units in the country.

The machine currently boasts a UMD games library in excess of 520 games, with an additional 300+ titles available to download on PSN.

In its time on the market it has undergone a number of revisions, including the ‘slim’ PSP-2000 model, though the PSP’s most notable reinvention was last year’s digital-only PSPgo, which shunned Sony’s UMD format in favour of PSN games distribution.

“Today, the PSP system is a well-established handheld platform that continuously redefines portable entertainment with quality that’s unparalleled,” SCEA VP Peter Dille stated.

“As PSP celebrates its fifth anniversary, the best is yet to come. We’re very excited about the vibrant 2010 lineup and are committed to continuing to offer entertainment experiences and immersive gameplay only possible on the PlayStation platform.”
PSP will celebrate its fifth birthday in Europe on September first. For reference, it was released in Japan in December 2004. ...

Since launching in the US in February, The Game Trail userbase has grown over 400%. Driven by a desire for information about iPhone games and gameplay video, The Game Trail users are a specific sub-set of the iPhone shopper demographic; they play a lot of games and care about game quality. The average user spends nearly five minutes in the app and browses an average of 4.5 game titles. Out of several thousand visitors to date, about 10% go on to buy an app that they viewed in The Game Trail. The app's sudden popularity corroborates independent research that suggests shoppers are 3-5 times more likely to buy an app when shown video of the game. The current most popular game genre as determined by The Game Trail users is Strategy.

The latest update to The Game Trail introduces users to the concept of "trailing." If you know what games you already like, The Game Trail will suggest similar titles that you may also like. Via "trailing," The Game Trail enables iPhone gamers to build a collection of great games suited to their individual tastes. The new update also includes an "Upcoming" section, providing users a first look at soon-to-be-released iPhone games. The new "Upcoming" feature highlights unreleased titles and provides a great way to build and measure buzz, as interested users can click a button to be notified upon release of the new game.

The iTunes App Store has quickly risen to become the most populated mobile game marketplace in the world. With over 25,000 game titles available now, the proliferation of content available to consumers on the iPhone has far outpaced that of any handheld, console or mobile gaming device in existence. What the App Store lacks in video trailers and independent reviews from professional sources, The Game Trail offers in a simple free app.

The Game Trail, a product of Swedish mobile developer Fabrication Games, was created in order to guide iPhone game shoppers down the right path and towards only the highest quality content available. Featuring video trailers, reviews, and unbiased rankings, The Game Trail database adds new games every day and is growing at a rate of 50% per month. With easy access to video trailers and reviews on The Game Trail app, App Store buyers’ regret is a thing of the past.
