Permanent Xbox Live bans are being handed out to Xbox 360 owners who have illegally pirated Halo 4.
The game became available online over the weekend, but can only be played by users who have modded their Xbox 360 console to run pirated code. And have then been daft enough to connect to Xbox Live.
“This email is to notify you that your Xbox Live privileges have been permanently suspended due to illegitimate prerelease title play,” the warning email reads.
“Because your conduct is in violation, the Xbox Live Enforcement Team has issued a permanent suspension. Your Xbox Live privileges will not be reinstated.”
The game won’t be released until November 6th. Microsoft is investigating the source of the leak.
"We are aware of isolated cases in which Halo 4 content has been propped on the web and are working closely with our security teams and law enforcement to address the situation immediately,” a Microsoft statement read.
"Consumers should be aware that piracy is illegal and we take vigorous action against illegal activity related to our products and services. Playing pirated copies of games, such as Halo 4, is a violation of the Xbox Live Terms of Use and will result in enforcement action, such as account and console bans."

Call of Duty Elite membership will come free with Black Ops II.
The bespoke social network was once seen as Activision’s early attempt to manoeuvre the Call of Duty IP into the subscription-based market, but those plans have seemingly been abandoned.
Instead, Activision will try to generate post-sale revenue for the game via the sale of multilayer map packs or the new £34.99 Season Pass.
“For Black Ops II, we’re offering a season pass, and we’re still offering DLC map packs à la carte,” Activision Publishing chief exec Eric Hirshberg told VentureBeat.
“The best thing for our business is to keep our players engaged. What we’ve found, Dean, is that Elite offers a lot of really engaging services that were only reaching a portion of our community. We think that by making these services available to a much wider audience, it will be better both for our players and for us.
“Absolutely. Our mission from the start with Elite was to make multiplayer a more social, more connected experience. And we accomplished that, but only for our premium members. So we’ve come to the conclusion that Elite has more value as a community-wide platform to drive engagement and connectivity than as a paid, members-only service. This is truly a win/win.”
Activision insists, however, that the CoD Elite experiment was not a failure.
“We have sold over 2.3m Elite memberships,” Hirshberg added. “I think we’ve shown that people are willing to pay for services if those services are compelling. We’re not making this change because services are harder to market.
“We’re making this change because we think there is a greater benefit to making these services available to a wider audience.

Global games retail giant GameStop is predicting big things for the next Call of Duty.
The firm says that Black Ops II is the most pre-ordered in its history - and that this means the franchise could once again break records at release in November.
CoD: Black Ops II is due out globally on November 13th.
It follows on on from last year's CoD: Modern Warfare 3, and is the sequel to CoD: Black Ops.
The first Black Ops is in fact the most popular game in the series ever, beating out the Modern Warfare sub-brand which propelled the nine-year-old franchise in the limelight in 2007.
GameStop's bold claims came in a press announcement today that game service Call of Duty Elite will be free when the new game hits.
Launched last year, Elite formerly included subscription options that provided access to DLC and extra community features.
GameStop president Tony Bartel said: "Consumer anticipation for Call of Duty: Black Ops II is tremendous.
"We are seeing the highest pre-orders in history.
"With its current pace, this Call of Duty is on track to break records and is likely to be our biggest game launch of all time."

Diablo creator Blizzard has revealed that it planned to release a version of the RPG series for Game Boy Color. Titled Diablo Junior, the game would have been available in multiple editions so players could meet up and swap items, much like the trading mechanic of Pokémon.Development of Diablo Junior began after the release of Diablo 2, and only a handful of Blizzard staff worked on the project. Intended as a singleplayer-only prequel to the original game, versions were considered for Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance. The team [at Blizzard] wanted to release three cartridges, each packing a different hero in the warrior-
rogue-sorcerer vein as well as items that players would have to trade for in order to collect,” Blizzard biographer David Craddock told Shack News. ”Heroes started in a unique town before heading into dungeons and wilderness zones,” Craddock explained. “Diablo Junior was ultimately put out to pasture (absent of cow levels, I’m sure) because of the steep production costs associated with developing handheld games.”
Craddock is now researching Stay Awhile And Listen, an unofficial history of Blizzard based on the experiences of more than 80 ex-employees. Other Blizzard material that never saw the light of day included an expansion for Diablo 2 and an untitled follow-up to Lord of Destruction that would have provided guildhalls for multiplayer clan meetings. Two new character classes were also proposed, but never developed.

Electronic Arts has stumbled across an interesting promotional tool for its Origin digital distribution service: accidentally give away thousands of games. Last week, the publisher set up a promotion offering US gamers a $20 discount token for taking part in an online survey. However, once participants had spent their reward, the code remained active, allowing wily users to download dozens of titles for nothing, as well as distribute the unsecure code to friends.Naturally, news quickly spread and once it made it onto Reddit, Origin was hit by thousands of greedy gamers filling their hard drives with titles like Dead Space, Sim City 4, Mass Effect 2 and Spore. The fun continued throughout Saturday and Sunday until EA discovered the error and leapt into action. “The coupon code is now expired; we’ll honor all sales made with the coupon code over the weekend,” explained Community Manager Sam Houston, via a forum thread. “Hope fans enjoy their games,” he added merrily, while perhaps looking across the room at a colleague quietly clearing his desk. The Origin service has proved controversial in the past, with some gamers labelling its terms and conditions Draconian and dismissing the client as spyware. The free games weekend may well have done wonders for PR. As one Twitter user put it, “EA accidentally gave away tons of games […] Am I the only one thinking it’s probably increased Origin useage (sic) by 500%?”However, EA’s generosity toward those who exploited its mistake hasn’t gone down well with everyone. Some of those who filled out the survey just before the offer was withdrawn feel they have unfairly missed out. “So the guys that scammed the system get to keep their multiple free/discounted games and those of us that were honest and filled out your survey get squat?” asked one user on the Origin forum, accurately. “The coupon is now expired,” responded a forlorn Houston. On the bright side for survey haters, it might be quite a while before Origin bothers them again.

    2. Raspberry Pi

The Raspberry Pi Foundation has doubled the RAM for its self-titled microcomputer while freezing its cost price.
One of the most common requests to the makers of the microcomputer, has been to increase the device's RAM – 256MB in the original unit – to allow it to function as a general-purpose computer, running multiple large applications concurrently and opening up greater programming uses for it.

From today, all Model B Raspberry Pis will ship with 512MB RAM as standard.
CPC, the consumer arm of Premier Farnell, the primary supplier and manufacturer of Raspberry Pi computers in the UK, will sell the new 512MB board for £29.95 – freezing at the cost price set for the original 256MB version.
Furthermore, CPC has promised customers all in-stock orders placed before 7pm will be dispatched the same day and no delivery will be charged. With thousands of units in stock, CPC says it has enough Raspberry Pis to cope with demand until January 2013.

EA founder says console market will become 'more like a hobby market' due to smartphone and tablet gaming.
Trip Hawkins founded Electronic Arts (EA) back in 1982, worked closely with Steve Jobs in the early days of Apple and founded Digital Chocolate, and although he doesn't have the same power today as he once did, his words still carry a lot of weight.
In an interview with IGN, he said that he sees console gaming becoming a hobby:
"The console market is always going to be with us, because there’s always going to be a hardcore segment, a segment that likes innovation. But it’s going to become a smaller market, and it’s going to be more like a hobby market. You look at airplanes. Most of us just want to be a passenger, but there’s a hobby market for people who are really into aviation and want to take flying lessons and maybe someday have their own airplane. I think that’s what’s happening to the console market.
"But there are billions of people now playing games. The gaming industry is finally becoming mass-market. It’s across two billion PCs and four billion mobile phones, and within a few years a billion tablets."
Hawkins continued: "Games are going everywhere. Plenty of people are playing for social reasons and playing when it’s convenient. It’s a trend towards mobile- and browser- and cloud-based games. You contrast that with what happens when you have to either purchase or download a specific app that runs native on a specific device and you only ever play it when you have that platform in front of you.
"In the old days I’d go down to the basement to play Grand Theft Auto. But the Facebook gamer is able to play at work, at home, in a hotel on a PC. They can get access to a browser just about anywhere. People are thinking about convenience first."
What do you think? Is mobile gaming going to push the console market back underground?
