Games industry analysts have weighed in with US sales predictions for the month of July, ahead of the release of official market data by the NPD Group this Thursday.

Wedbush Morgan's Michael Pachter and fellow analyst firm EEDAR expect Xbox 360 to be the top-selling platform for the seventh consecutive month, ahead of DS, Wii and PS3. Sony's home console is the only system both analyst firms expect to record an improvement over last July's sales total. Meanwhile, 3DS sales are forecast to come in second-bottom, ahead of PSP only, unless you still count PS2.

Wedbush / EEDAR July sales estimates (change year-on-year):
    360 - 350,000 (-21%) / 401,000 (-10%)
    DS - 315,000 (-21%) / 310,000 (-22%)
    Wii - 230,000 (-9%) / 225,000 (-11%)
    PS3 - 220,000 (+3%) / 229,000 (+7%)
    3DS - 110,000 (n/a) / 100,000 (n/a)
    PSP - 90,000 (+7%) / 80,000 (-5%)
    PS2 - 10,000 (-59%) / n/a
    Total - 1,325,000 (-7%) / 1,345,000 (-5%)

On the software front, Pachter said he expects July sales to be led by new release NCAA Football 12, with continued strong sales of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D, Infamous 2 and LA Noire.

Wal-Mart isn't waiting for the official date to cut its 3DS prices. It's cutting them NOW.
It's being reported on Cheap Ass Gamer (thnaks IndustryGamers) that Wal-Mart stores across the States have already stuck $169.99 price tags to its 3DS hardware shelves - a full three days before the official price cut date announced by Nintendo.

The best thing is that qualification for Nintendo's 3DS Ambassador program -designed to compensate early adopters who paid full-price - is still open until August 12, meaning you can get your cheaper 3DS AND still get the 20 free games promised.

3DS' RRP will drop from $249 to $169.99 in the US on August 12. A cut to the European trade price will come on the same day. Nintendo is yet to confirm the exact drop for the EU, but has told CVG that it will be "around a third".

Australia will also benefit on August 12, with 3DS dipping from $350 to $250. Meanwhile, Japan will see a price drop on August 11 - to 15,000, down from 25,000.

The 3DS Ambassador Programme is open to anyone who owns a 3DS system and uses a wireless broadband internet signal to connect to the Nintendo eShop at least once before August 12.

    2. Cloud News

In an exclusive interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Gaikai CEO David Perry has revealed that the cloud gaming company has signed up the majority of video game publishers.
While the company has inked a deal with retail giant Walmart and is in talks with other online stores, it has only revealed two publishing partners publicly - Electronic Arts and Capcom.
"I would say almost all of the major publishers are actually in contracts with us right now, so we're making very good progress with them," he revealed.
"It's a strange situation, it's kind of surprising but the only way you can place your video game on your own website is through us, there's no other way to do it."
The interest is keeping the Gaikai team busy. "We have three different attorney firms working for us just on agreements right now."
He also revealed that Gaikai had a new, super-speedy digital download technology currently in closed beta, for those users that are unable to make use of cloud gaming due to slow internet connections.
It's a strange situation, but the only way you can place your videogame on your own website is through us.
    David Perry, Gaikai

"The concept there is just insanely fast downloads from your browser, your web browser delivering games to the user," Perry explained.
"We did that for two reasons. One is that we wanted to be able to let everybody play, and number two is if somebody decides to buy the game or download the MMO, we have to have the fastest way to get it to them. And that's what we've built."
When asked if he thought the service was a threat to consoles, Perry said that single-function hardware is more likely threatened by companies like Apple, which iterate technology at a very rapid rate.
"We don't think we're a threat to console. I think the threat to consoles is actually Apple. I think the concern there is that they're generating hardware so quickly now."
"If you're creating and shipping new hardware every 12 months, and during that 12 months you're also giving pretty impressive upgrades, the features that people want, and you’re giving them those every 6 months and hardware every 12 months, I think the idea that you would have five to seven years on hardware refreshes is becoming a technical problem."
He also saw handhelds as facing a murky future thanks to the introduction of smartphones.
"They really need to be that sort of multifunction device to survive. And if you think about it, that ultimately turns them into cellphones. So I don't think cloud gaming is their problem."
"When you talk to younger kids today, most of them don't have wristwatches, and the reason is they only do one thing. And they don't want to carry anything that just does one thing. They carry their phone and it does everything. And so if you make single function devices, then you've got a problem."
David Perry is CEO and co-founder at Gaikai, and will be speaking at the Cloud Gaming USA in September.

A fire at a Sony warehouse in Enfield could could delay deliveries of Sony products. The entertainment company is just one of the many buisnesses hit by the recent London riots.
No injuries have been reported, but the 20,000 square metre storage facility, which is operated by subsidiary Sony DADC and handles distribution of Blu-rays, CDs and DVDs, was still in flames this morning, with fire fighters on the scene.
"There will likely be some impact on deliveries," Yoko Yasukochi, a Sony spokeswoman told Reuters.
"We cannot determine the cause of the fire or the extent of the damage yet because it's not possible to enter the building," she added.
Reports from the scene suggest the warehouse was looted before being set alight by youths with petrol bombs.
The news caused a two per cent drop in Sony share prices.

Nintendo UK has formed a new partnership with UK Wi-Fi provide The Cloud, allowing 3DS users to access 5,000 hotspots for free.
"The Cloud partnership represents another exciting step that will continue to expand its appeal and encourage owners to take their Nintendo 3DS systems with them wherever they go, offering different and unique experiences everyday," said Nintendo UK marketing director Dawn Paine.
From today the access points allow 3DS owners to access content via the Nintedo SpotPass service, access the Nintendo eSHop or just browse the internet.
"Nintendo is a fantastic addition to our list of strategic partners and site owners who are making the most of Wi-Fi’s potential to give their customers a better entertainment experience," added Steve Nicholson, The Cloud's managing director.
"If gamers are going to play outside of their home, it’s essential they have a fast and reliable internet connection. This is what Wi-Fi offers compared to a technology such as 3G, which struggles to handle really rich, data-hungry video content."

That crafty Ben Heck is always up to something, like whipping up an Xbox 360 disk changer for the laziest of gamers. But, on the latest episode of his hacking and modding show, Mr. Heck is back to helping those in need and crafting accessible controllers for the disabled. During the 15-minute hackathon, the modder extraordinaire creates two different Xbox 360 remotes -- a split model for those with limited arm motion, and a one-handed version for people with use of only one set of digits. If you've got a smidgen of soldering experience (and ideally access to a CNC) these projects are probably even simple enough to tackle yourself.

Numero cinque took a lot longer to crack than the previous betas. Are the Dev-Team guys beginning to struggle, or are they just out enjoying the sunshine? Either way, it's still tethered-only and it won't work on an iPad 2, but it's a heck of a lot better than the exercise yard. Jailbreak app developers can get busy with redsn0w 0.9.8b5 via the source link.

We know that Symbian isn't dying any time soon, but here in the US of A the little OS that couldn't quite captivate our picky buyers will soon be mighty hard to find. Speaking with All Things D, Chris Weber, President of Nokia's US operations, said "When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc." That means no more full-price or business-focused devices in the US, and no more Symbian love. This is at least in part thanks to the failure of the Astoundto find a solid foothold, but Nokia's upcoming Windows Phone offerings (like the Sea Ray) will at least follow in its footsteps, being sold with proper carrier subsidies and riding the wave of a giant advertising blitz. Will it work? According to Weber, it has to: "The reality is if we are not successful with Windows Phone, it doesn't matter what we do."
