A new initiative has launched in the Middle East to remove violent or controversial content from videogames, allowing them to be released in conservative Arabic countries.

Abu Dhabi English language newspaper The National report that Rubicon Group Holding and Modern Electronics Company - Sony's Saudi Arabian distributor – are teaming up to localise games with unacceptable content.

As well as dubbing the games into Arabic and editing out forbidden material, there are apparently also plans to add in new Middle Eastern characters to make titles more culturally relevant.

"Those games that are extra-violent, or have sensitive issues for the region, will be edited for content," said Ghassan Ayoubi, Rubicon Holding's executive director.

"It's not purely dubbing in Arabic, but eliminating things that may be inappropriate for the region. It's introducing one or two elements that will be specifically for the region - maybe introducing a new character.

"It's not censoring. It's tailoring or customising it for the market. It's not deviating from the game itself."

Apparently, PlayStation 3 titles will be the focus, with "two to four games per year" being worked on. The article claims FIFA 11 and the as-yet unannounced Uncharted 3 will be the first titles on the butcher's block.

There are of course a whole raft of issues to address here – code access, copyright breach, freedom of expression concerns, compromised narratives and so forth - not to mention the existence, or otherwise, of Uncharted 3. We're following up with various publishers and developers to find out more about how this might work.

As it stands, games are regularly denied release in Middle Eastern countries due to strict censorship laws. Dead Rising 2, Mafia II and the Grand Theft Auto series have all recently been turned away.

US car manufacturer Chrysler Group has revealed further details of the special edition Call of Duty: Black Ops Jeep that it announced last month.

The vehicle, a black Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with Call of Duty graphics on the exterior and new tail lamp guards, will be available next month, with prices ranging from $30,625 to $33,500.

No word yet on whether Chrysler plan to throw in a copy of the game too.

As way of an explanation, Activision exec Brad Jakeman got out his marketing-speak thesaurus.

"This is a dynamic and fully integrated partnership that brings together two iconic brands across a full array of consumer touch-points.

"From the beginning our teams worked together to make this a truly creative partnership that added to the consumer experience of both the Jeep and Call of Duty: Black Ops brands."

Call of Duty: Black Ops developer Treyarch got roped into the gregarious merchandising stunt too.

"Our work with the Jeep team focused around using the Jeep Wrangler in our levels, and gameplay experiences, and translating the style and look of the vehicle in Black Ops to the Jeep on the showroom floor that our fans can own," studio head Mark Lamia explained.

Hands up if you intend to be one of those fans?

Call of Duty: Black Ops sneaks onto DS, PC, PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 from 9th November.

And just like that, the rumor mill smirks. HP has just come clean with a device that we've been hearing more and more about over the past few weeks, and with it will come the next generation of webOS that we've been hearing about for even longer. The Palm Pre 2 will be the first device to ship with HP webOS 2.0, with the revamped and renamed (presumably to use on more than just Palm smartphones) mobile OS promising "true multitasking," Stacks (for organizing apps) Just Type, HP Synergy (links your email and social networking accounts), Exhibition (enabling users to run apps designed specifically for the Palm Touchstone Charging Dock) and support for Adobe's Flash Player 10.1 Beta. It's also bringing along a new Favorites tagging option, Skype Mobile (on the Verizon version only), text assist, integrated Quickoffice, VPN support, a redesigned launcher and full support for Bluetooth keyboards and SPP peripherals.

As for Pre 2 itself? Little is being revealed at the moment, but we're told to expect a 1GHz CPU, a five megapixel camera (LED flash, extended depth of field, geotagging, and video capture), glass display and a "sleeker, streamlined design" that still combines a touchpanel with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. In other words, it's a faster, slimmer Pre, and some would argue it's what the Pre Plus should've been. At any rate, SFR customers in France will get first dibs on Friday, with Verizon and an undisclosed carrier in Canada scheduled to get it "in the coming months." Oh, and as for US-based developers? They'll be able to purchase unlocked UMTS versions of the Pre 2 (!) in their homeland, though pricing remains elusive.

Update: The Pre 2 portal is now live, showcasing a 3.1-inch 480 x 320 (HVGA) multitouch display, a black enclosure, Exchange support, built-in GPS, ambient light / proximity sensors, an accelerometer, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, 16GB of inbuilt storage space, a battery good for around 5.5 hours of talking and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Well, it looks like the Xbox 360 dashboard isn't the only thing getting an overhaul this fall -- Microsoft's Major Nelson has just announced that Xbox.com will be getting a "massive facelift" tomorrow. The changes are more than just visual, however, and include a few new features that more tightly integrate the site with the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone 7. That includes a new browser-based avatar editor and, most interestingly, some web games that you'll be able to play with your Xbox Live friends on the web or on Windows Phone 7 -- no word if they'll earn you achievements. Otherwise, you can expect a streamlined view of messages, friend and game requests, some new family reports that will let you see how your family is using Xbox Live, and some improved browsing and searching options for the Marketplace. It's still not clear exactly when it'll go live, but the site will be down for a short period starting at 5:00AM ET tomorrow to prepare for the changes

Level-5 is expanding the Professor Layton franchise into 3D with the new Mask of Miracle, but that added dimension isn't the only expansion taking place in this game. During the Level-5 Vision conference, CEO Akihiro Hino announced that the new 3DS puzzle title will have daily downloadable puzzles for a year. Previous Layton games have had weekly puzzles available through the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. (And if you didn't know that, you suddenly have a bunch of bonus puzzles waiting in your Layton games!)

Hino also noted that Mask of Miracle was originally developed -- and announced -- as a DS game, but added, "We redid it from scratch midway through." He also revealed that the story takes place across two timelines, with a younger Professor Layton and the present-day (in the game's world) version both solving puzzles.
