Nippon Ichi started rolling out downloadable content for Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days yesterday. If Disgaea 3 is any indicator we’re going to see a lot of cameo characters. At least some of this week’s add-ons are freebies.

Netherworld denizens can get an extra quest with Toro and Kuro, the cats from Sony’s Doko Demo Issyo games. Toro and Kuro occasionally show up in the Item World’s Innocent Town carrying gifts if you accept their hide and seek challenge. You can also get a Toro’s Fist, a glove for Axel. Plenair, one of this week’s three downloadable cameos, is also being given out for free.

Disgaea 2: Dark Hero Days is scheduled to come out in North America this August.

Konami picked up the license to Penguin no Mondai (A Penguin’s Troubles) for a Nintendo DS platformer last year. A sequel is in development and it decks Kinoshita, the penguin, in Saint Seiya style armor.

In Penguin no Mondai X: Tenkuu no 7 Senshi (A Penguin’s Troubles X: Seven Warriors of the Sky) Kinoshita Beckham faces Hell’s army in a decisive battle. With his metallic vulture helmet and golden axes Kinohsita is as ready as he will ever be. The outfit is so over-the-top ridiculous it’s awesome.

Other than the character design Konami hasn’t revealed much about the DS game. It’s described as an amazing transforming battle adventure and has wireless play for four, two if you’re using download play. Japan gets A Penguin’s Troubles X: Seven Warriors of the Sky on July 23.

Nintendo has announced that it has reached an agreement with Amazon and eBay through which the shopping sites will prohibit the sale of the R4 and other DS flashcarts.

"Nintendo is pleased with the co-operation it has received from both eBay and Amazon to prevent the sales of game copying devices," Nintendo's global head of anti-piracy, Jodie Daughtery told MCV. eBay has actually pulled auctions for copying devices for years (presumably as an "item encouraging illegal activity), so if there is a policy update, it involves even more vigilant policing of auctions.

Amazon UK games director Chris Poad told MCV that Amazon has a "notice and take down" process for its third-party Marketplace. "So where a third party believes that their IP has been infringed, they can highlight it and we can take it down. This is what happened in the case of the R4."

Now Nintendo just has the rest of the Internet to deal with in its efforts to curtail DS piracy (and, as an extremely unfortunate side effect, homebrew).

If you were jealous of Japan's New Play Control releases of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, don't be. Nintendo of America just announced plans to release all three (non-pinball) Metroid Prime games on a single Wii disc as Metroid Prime Trilogy. The press release says that it was developed by "Retro Studios and Nintendo." Did Retro itself work on the refit before leaving Nintendo, or does the Retro credit apply only to the original games?

Metroid Prime 1 and 2 will be enhanced with a widescreen mode and the pointer-based Wii controls from the Japanese re-releases. Metroid Prime 3 won't be, because it was already a Wii game and already has them. The collection will feature a "new unlockables system" that allows access to bonus artwork and other rewards based on accomplishments in all three games -- Corruption's "token" system applied to the whole series.

Trilogy will be out in North America on August 24 for $50.

The studio behind the world's biggest free MMO thinks so, and is discussing the model with the big platform holders right now
The developer behind the world’s most popular free MMO is in discussion with the main platform holders in a bid to bring the free-to-play model to consoles.
RuneScape developer Jagex is aiming to turn console digital distribution services such as WiiWare, XBLA and PSN into platforms that can host free games.
But, speaking to Develop in an interview published today, Jagex CEO Mark Gerhard (pictured) added that it's likely that a “nominal fee” will be charged for such downloadable titles.
“My aim is that there will be a completely free game on all the consoles out there where we preserve the current free-to-play model,” he said.
“I think this is where the industry should go, but I don’t think that’s where they want it to go, given that everything that goes on WiiWare, PSN and XBLA has a price tag on it in some form.”

Gerhard went on to suggest that – while discussions with the platform holders were still ongoing – it is likely that free-to-play games will arrive on consoles with a price-tag attached.
“I think that the free-to-play games will probably be charged at a nominal fee, so you pay to download it and, if you want, pay to receive the premium version of the game," he said. “That’s the thinking at the moment, though things are very much up in the air.”
“But of course, my preference will be to lobby these companies, to tell them that they need to catch up with today’s tastes and provide free games if you want to compete in this area.”
Jagex, which is headquartered in Cambridge, England, has enjoyed immense popularity with its free-to-play MMO RuneScape. Currently the game boasts 8.5 million accounts.

Nearly 500 students and faculty at Aoyama Gakuin University in Japan will receive free iPhones as part of the school's new Mobile & Net Society Education and Training program. The trial, which is set to begin this fall, will use the iPhone's built in GPS function to determine if the students are present, and use that information to replace traditional methods of taking attendance. The university's announced a deal with provider Softbank Mobile to provide the phones and basic services to all students and staff at the school for no charge. The school also plans on rolling out simple tests and homework assignments using the device. So... is there an app for that, or what?

In the company’s financial results briefing Q&A for fiscal ‘09, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata stated the company is preparing “several titles” for release toward the end of 2009.

First of all, please understand that I am not in a position to comment on third parties software, especially when the lineup has not been announced by them.
The reason why I said today that April, May and June sales of Wii will not reach last year’s results but that the situation will change from summer this year was because the company has been preparing for several titles to be launched toward the end of this year that can drive the market.

Iwata also goes on to state that the company has been informed by numerous Western publishers that they will focus on Wii development, and that he is hopeful that these publishers have unannounced titles in the works that he is not aware of. Furthermore Nintendo forecasts a 40 million software unit shipment increase to accompany these collective releases.

As far as first-party releases go, we’re already aware of Wii Sports Resort, Sin & Punishment 2 and The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks, all of which are getting Western releases. What else does NCL hope to release in the West?

Square Enix will bring the classic action RPG Secret of Mana to mobile phones next month. If you have an NTT DoCoMo phone (think Docomodake) you can get it for 840 yen.

Only $8.50 for a portable version of Secret of Mana? That’s awesome! Well, maybe. Square Enix hasn’t explained how the controls will work or if the game will have online play over DoCoMo’s mobile network. Online play would totally make Secret of Mana mobile worth a look.
