According to an NPD report released today, Capcom's Resident Evil 5 for the Xbox 360 topped the US sales charts for March, selling 938,000 units between its release date of March 13 and April 4, 2009. The PlayStation 3 version of the same game also showed healthy sales, coming in at number four with 585,000 units sold.

Overall software sales were down 17 per cent in March of 2009, with USD 792.83 million versus USD 952.14 million in the same period last year.

As with the decline in hardware sales, NPD analyst Anita Frazier attributed the fall in software sales to the Easter holiday falling in April this year, as well as March 2008's release of Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo's Pokemon Platinum for the Nintendo DS, released in the US toward the end of the month, came in second place with 805,000 units sold. Microsoft's Halo Wars, which saw a March 3 debut, sold 693,000 units.

Two more March premieres made their way into the top ten list, both of them Major League Baseball titles - Sony's MLB '09: The Show and Take 2's Major League Baseball 2K9. The rest of the top ten list shows continued strong performances from previous months, including Wii Fit, Killzone 2, Wii Play, and Mario Kart Wii.

    The full list is below:

    Resident Evil 5 (Capcom, Xbox 360) - 938,000
Pokemon Platinum (Nintendo, DS) - 805,000
    Halo War (Microsoft, Xbox 360) - 639,000
    Resident Evil 5 (Capcom, PS3) - 585,000
Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) - 541,000
    MLB ‘09: The Show (Sony, PS3) - 305,000
    Killzone 2 (Sony, PS3) - 296,000
Wii Play (Nintendo, Wii) - 281,000
Mario Kart Wii (Nintendo, Wii) - 278,000
    Major League Baseball 2K9 (Take 2, Xbox 360) - 205,000

Official sales data from the NPD Group showed an overall 18 per cent drop in US hardware sales for March 2009, at USD 1.43 billion versus USD 1.72 billion in March of 2008.

While the Wii once again sold the most units in March, only the Xbox 360 showed growth this year, up from 262,000 to 330,000 units sold.

The NPD points to the Easter holiday as a significant factor for this year's drop - while Easter fell on March 23 of 2008, Easter 2009 did not occur until April 12.

"You might not think that Easter is that big of a gift-giving holiday, but our consumer data shows that 8 per cent of industry unit sales were purchased for the Easter occasion in March 2008, accounting for USD 121M of that months' sales," said NPD analyst Anita Frazier.

"We expect that most of Easter sales this year fell into the April reporting period and we'll see that reflected in next month's data."

The hardware sales breakdown for March of 2009 is as follows:

    Nintendo Wii: 601,000
    Nintendo DS: 563,000
    Xbox 360: 330,000
    PlayStation 3: 218,000
    PlayStation Portable: 168,000
    PlayStation 2: 112,000

Microsoft has responded early to this month's NPD sales results, revealing that the Xbox 360 sold 330,000 units in March of 2009, up 25 per cent from the same period in 2008.

Additionally, Microsoft revealed that the number of unique users purchasing content through Xbox Live rose 128 per cent over last year's numbers, which Microsoft credits to the success of game add-ons that include Fallout 3 expansion The Pitt and feature film The Dark Knight.

"Xbox 360 was the only game console to show year-over-year growth in the US as the USD 199 starting price continued to resonate with consumers looking to get more entertainment value for their money," Microsoft said in a statement.

"Retail sales of Xbox 360 systems hit 330,000 units in March, climbing 25 percent from a year earlier, in contrast to double-digit declines posted by Wii and PlayStation 3. March was the sixth month in a row that Xbox 360 has seen year-over-year sales growth."

Microsoft also revealed, prior to the NPD's official announcement, that three of the top ten console games in March were Xbox 360 titles, including Resident Evil 5, Halo Wars and MLB 2K09.

Sony is preparing to hit consumers with more major videogame franchises as it continues its renewed focus on the PSP format.

While industry rumour has centred on hardware revisions for the handheld, Sony itself is concentrating on new software, with heavyweight brands promised to be revealed for the PSP in the coming months.

"There's a lot of software coming. We're really focused on software, and I don't think that's a big surprise given that it's going to be the best software year the PSP has ever had, there's no doubt," said John Koller, director of hardware marketing for SCEA, in an exclusive interview published today.

"You can think of some of the major franchises on console that would come over to PSP and people are going to be very excited."

In February Sony unveiled a batch of new titles to help the PSP combat market pressure from Nintendo's new DSi and Apple's iPhone, including new LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm games from internal studios, and third-party support from the likes Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed and EA's Rock Band.

"The fruits of the labour is pouring out this year, and we've been talking about it a lot, but we've only mentioned about the first half of the line-up," said Koller. "There's another half to maybe three quarters that we're going to be announcing in the months leading up to E3. There's a lot of big franchises to come."

Sony is confidently taking control of the PSPs direction, letting publishing partners know what doesn't sell following consumer feedback.

"They haven't demanded as much new IP, they have demanded larger franchise games that are unique for PSP, and they don't want ports," revealed Koller.

"And they want to be able to find these games because of a lack of marketing behind many of the PSP titles. If you can't find games on the shelf, and consumers don't know they exist, it's hard for them to sell,2 he said, repeating previous admissions by Sony that it had under-supported the format in the past.

And Koller is bullish on the PSPs success this year, noting that in 2008 the format enjoyed its most successful 12 months despite a thin portfolio of titles.

"Last year was the best sales year for PSP, and that was with a limited software line-up. How high is high when we have a much better software line-up for this year?"

Companies and enterprising individuals have been dabbling with the tantalizing concept of slapping Android on a cheap netbook for months now, and seeing how Android and Symbian could end up locked in a heated battle for the hearts and minds of the open-source mobile platform world, it stands to reason that the boys and girls at the Foundation would want to counter the OHA's every move. Some good people in the S60 On Symbian Customer Operations group (try fitting that on a business card) have managed to compile and run an S60-skinned Symbian build on one of Intel's Atom reference boards, showing a stock S60 screen and an OpenGL demo -- which, as you might imagine, runs circles around the performance of a garden-variety S60 handset. To quote the Foundation's boss, "I was most impressed with the responsiveness of the UI and upper application layers" -- the only question left to be answered is whether there's a place in the world for a Symbian-powered netbook.

3DConnexion has always had a place in our heart for their reasonably priced and smartly designed three dimensional controllers. Now the company is back on the scene with the SpacePilot Pro, which ups the ante -- and the price point -- considerably. This bad boy sports an LCD screen and lots (and lots) of buttons, including controls for various isometric views and navigation settings (pan and zoom, rotation, speed). If that weren't enough, there are function keys for various apps and an applet for checking your MS Outlook mail. Ships with drivers for Windows XP and Vista, Solaris 8 and 10, and Linux -- as always seems to be the case with this company, Mac users are stuck without for the time being. Retails for $499, available now.

Netflix has told us that its streaming service on game consoles is exclusive to Xbox 360 for the time being, although when asked about its future plans the company didn't rule out the possibility of taking its movie and TV offerings to other platforms.

"Netflix is always looking for ways to grow the service. For now, Netflix streaming on game consoles is exclusively on the Xbox 360 - and it's a terrific hit," a spokesperson said. "More than one million Netflix members who are Xbox Gold members have watched more than 1.5 billion minutes of movies and TV episodes instantly over the internet from Netflix via their Xbox 360."

When asked about potential plans to expand its operations outside of the States, the Netflix spokesperson simply told us that "Netflix is available in the U.S. only."

Gears of War 2 executive producer Rod Fergusson has told VG247 that innovations in both games software and Microsoft services mean we've yet to see the limit of what can be achieved with Xbox 360.

Fergusson was quoted previously as saying the box had been maxed out, a comment he told us was taken out of context.
"I think there's still more it can do," the developer said, talking at GDC.
"Hardware, in some regards, always has limits, but it's the software that takes advantage of that.
"The [Unreal] engine is evolving - it evolved dramatically from Gears 1 to Gears 2 - and I think you'll see people continue to push that envelope about how they use the memory, and how they use the hard drive, and all those sort of things."
