Games portal scalable to tablet devices and open to third-party developers

Microsoft is bringing Atari’s 40-year library of games to browser and tablets with the newly launched Atari Arcade.
Compatible with Internet Explorer, HTML5 versions of eight games will be available to play for free on the site.

These include Asteroids, Combat, Centipede, Lunar Lander, Missile Command, Pong, Super Breakout and Yar’s Revenge.
The games have been slightly redesigned for modern hardware and are all compatible with touch-screen, and can be scaled to various sized tablet devices and PCs. It is not optimised for smartphones however.
Pong can be played by dragging the player’s bar, Missile Command uses mutli-touch whilst other games use a button press UI. Users can also keep track of their high scores and how many times they have played a game.

Adobe pressured by 'strategic partners' to make browser plug-in available again on Android

Adobe’s Flash player has returned to the Google App Store despite having been pulled from Android devices just two weeks ago.
As reported by the BBC, the company said that a number of “strategic partners” in the UK had pressured the it into bringing its web browser plug-in back online.

Adobe had previously planned to end work on Flash for Android, and said it would no longer be certified to run on mobiles operating on Android 4.1, and that access through the Google Play Store would be limited.
However, partners such as media giant BBC have convinced the firm to bring it back, but only for the short-term. The UK broadcaster suggested that it needed time to shift to new technology as the plug-in was crucial to its iPlayer service.
"Flash Player continues to be available on Google Play for users in the UK for a short while due to requests from strategic partners," said an Adobe spokesperson.

To mark the 25th anniversary of the franchise, Konami has announced a new Metal Gear Solid game.
Unveiled at a Japanese press event, the game will be called Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and will be open-world.
The game was demonstrated on what was described as ‘a current-gen PC’ and was called ‘amazing’ in a number of tweets – even though press and attendees were forbidden to reveal any details.
What we do know from the tweets is that the presentation began with a cut-scene which moved seamlessly into gameplay without a change in graphics. Main protagonists Big Boss is shown creeping around in the rain at night, snapping necks and dodging spotlights.
The game will be powered by the latest generation of Konami’s FOX Engine.
Creator Hideo Kojima also confirmed that aMetal Gear Solid movie is in the works at Columbia Pictures. The film is being produced by Avi Arad, whose former credits include Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk andThe Amazing Spider-Man.

Square Enix has launched a new service offering its back catalogue for free to gamers.
CoreOnline streams HD full console-quality titles, including Hitman: Blood Money and Mini Ninjas. Lara Croft: Guardian of Light will be coming to the platform in October, and other Tomb Raider titles will be added soon.
“We’re offering gamers the chance to play entire games completely for free. The games are funded by advertising, and users will normally have a choice of adverts to watch in order to earn game time,” reads the CoreOnline site.
Players will earn 20 minutes of game time for each one minute-long ad that they watch. The ads are initiated during the game’s loading time, and CoreOnline insist that they will not artificially increase the load times to accommodate the ads.
Those who really don’t wish to watch ads can chose to skip them and purchase levels or full games.
Game time acquired by watching an advert during any game can be redeemed across any other game available on the platform.
Square Enix’s game streaming platform launches in the wake OnLive having to sell its assets to venture a capitol firm, as well as founder Steve Perlman resigning.

    2. Windows Phone

South Korean company steals a march on Nokia, announcing their Windows phones just days before the Finnish firm.
The announcement of the Galaxy Note II was a given for IFA 2012, but the reveal of the Samsung Ativ S - its first smartphone to run Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 Phone system - was a surprise.
Featuring a 4.8in display, the Ativ S will be one of the bigger models on the market and contains an NFC chip.
Alongside the Windows smartphone, Samsung also unveiled the Samsung Ativ tablet running Windows 8 on a low-power ARM processor (aka Windows RT) and the Ativsmart PC and Ativsmart PC Pro, Windows 8 tablets with detachable keyboards similar to Asus's Transformer hybrids.

A sign that the Kindle Fire is breaking out of the US, or just oneupmanship with Barnes & Noble?
Amazon has announced that its Android Appstore is going live across Europe, hot on the heels of Barnes & Noble's decision to take the Nook out of the US for the first time and make a play for the UK e-reader market.
The Appstore is now available to consumers in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain and could be a sign that the Kindle Fire is finally reaching Europe?
Amazon says it will offer localised versions of the store for each market and - as in the US - users will be offered a free app to download each day. The premium version of Angry Birds is the first free app and will be followed by Plants Vs. Zombies.
Users will also be able to create reviews from the app and make one-click payments. Amazon also said that purchases can be used "across a customer's Android devices".
In Germany, France and Italy, the Android marketplace will be called App-Shop. In Spain, it will be brandedTienda Apps and in the UK it will carry the same name as the US version, Amazon Appstore for Android.

    2. Apple iPhone

It's just one more sign that the iPhone 5 is right around the corner.
Apple's Reuse and Recycle service is a great way to get some money back when upgrading to a new device, and is a good indicator of when a new product is coming.
So, it's little surprise that the iPhone 4S appearing as a recycle option on the Apple site has given the iPhone 5 rumour mill a fresh shot of adrenaline.
The recycling offer strongly suggests Apple is going to announce its new handset soon, and the much-touted September 12 launch date seems increasingly likely.
If users want to trade in their 4S, the amount of cash you get depends on the exact specs and the condition of the handset. The maximum available is $345 for a 64GB iPhone 4S in very good condition with a battery that fully charges and power cord included.
A more common 16GB phone will still reach $285 if it’s in great condition.

Archos already has its hands in the kiddie-tablet market, with its 7-inch Arnova Child Pad, and it's taking on the productivity-minded crowd with its keyboard-toting 101 XS. Now the company is going after another niche segment with the just-announced GamePad. The 7-inch slate runs Android 4.0 with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz and a quad-core Mali 400 MP GPU, and it sports physical gaming controls in addition to the standard touchscreen. Archos includes its own "game recognition and mapping tools," which ensure that the physical buttons are compatible with Android games that use virtual controls (some 1,000 titles are apparently compatible with the GamePad at this point). Of course, this is an internet-enabled device as well, and it will include full access to the Play market and WiFi connectivity when it goes on sale at the end of October. Other specs include 8GB of internal storage, plus a microSD card slot that adds up to 64GB. There's also a mini-HDMI connection for outputting content to your TV. For now, Archos is only announcing pricing as "less than €150", and the device will drop in the US and Europe at the same time. For now, the below-the-break press release will have to satisfy your curiosity.
