    press release:

Harmonix, developer of the blockbuster Guitar Hero™ franchise, MTV: Music Television, a division of MTV Networks, a unit of Viacom (NYSE: VIA, VIA.B), and Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) today announced that Fender Musical Instruments Corporation (FMIC) will have their instruments exclusively featured in the upcoming videogame Rock Band™, an all-new platform for music fans and gamers to experience and connect with music. In addition, Roland Corporation and BOSS have agreed to have their brands featured within Rock Band.

To deliver the ultimate interactive music experience in Rock Band, Harmonix and MTV have secured an agreement with Fender Musical Instruments Corporation, the world’s most respected manufacturer of electric guitars and amplifiers, that will allow the Rock Band game controller peripheral to be modeled after the legendary Fender Stratocaster, one of the most enduring and iconic models of electric guitar in the world. In addition, Fender guitars, basses and amps will be exclusively featured in the game.

“Fender is pleased to be part of Rock Band and the exciting opportunity it offers passionate music fans and gamers,” said Bill Mendello, CEO of Fender Musical Instruments Corporation. “Our friends at Harmonix have done an amazing job of capturing the power and style of legendary Fender products within the virtual gaming experience and delivering it all in the spirit of rock ‘n’ roll.”

To further raise the level of Rock Band’s authenticity, Roland Corporation, the world’s leading innovator in electronic instruments, and BOSS, recognized for its line of guitar effects pedals, have agreed to have their brands featured in Rock Band in-game and via co-marketing.

"Part of Roland's mission is to bring people closer to the music they love. Rock Band certainly fulfills that goal by bringing a deeply interactive music experience to the world, and having Roland featured in the game is a great honor," stated Dennis Houlihan, President and CEO of Roland Corporation U.S.

“Like the Fender Stratocaster, BOSS effects pedals have a long distinguished history,” states BOSS U.S. President Paul Youngblood. “We’ve worked with Fender on many projects in the past and we’re honored to be sharing this experience with them. Having the Strat® in Rock Band is going to take the virtual world by storm and when it does, we’ll be proud to have the BOSS name and pedals right there with it.”

“The Stratocaster has been the weapon of choice for many of the world’s legendary guitarists. Giving players the opportunity to rock out using a guitar peripheral modeled after the Strat really adds to the authenticity of the experience,” said Alex Rigopulos, president and co-founder of Harmonix. “Many of the staff here at Harmonix play Fender and Roland instruments and use BOSS effects pedals in their own bands, so we are thrilled to be able to work with these companies.”

Rock Band will allow players to play solo or recruit bandmates and jam side-by-side or virtually online, playing music from the greatest rock artists of all time. Built on unprecedented deals with the world’s biggest record labels and music publishers, the music featured in Rock Band will span all genres of rock and include many master recordings.

The title is slated for release on PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft® in holiday 2007. For more information on Rock Band and Harmonix Music Systems please visit www.rockbandgame.com and www.harmonixmusic.com. ...

    press release:

Oxygen Games™ is finally ready to spill the beans about its enigmatic title, King of Clubs. Possibly one of the most eagerly-anticipated games that nobody knows anything about, King of Clubs features a whole lot of brain-engagin’ fun. In fact, it’s the best in the west!

Never the same game twice, this absorbing and addictive, off the wall mini-golf-based puzzler requires players to use their ingenuity to play their way to victory and lucrative rewards, whether strategically, tactically or by being a downright dirty dawg…! Players must collect, unlock, buy or hire rewards to enable them to complete a variety of puzzles across five themes, on more than 95 holes to build up their equipment and skills. Not only that but with seemingly endless ways of completing each puzzle, King of Clubs offers enormously long-lasting playability.

Set in a dilapidated theme park in the middle of the Nevada desert (rumours abound that it is built on the site of an old nuclear waste site…but we can ignore that), King of Clubs looks like a cross between an amateur theatrical production and a kitsch vintage Americana playground paradise for jerky-lovin’ trailer trash! Complete with pteranodons on poles, spaceships on string and wobbly waves (plus so much more!), each themed world comes complete with its own quirky resident pro/boss, whom players must beat in order to advance to the next level before ending up in a showdown with the top guy himself, Big Bubba King.

An excited Big Bubba, entrepreneur and owner of Big Bubba’s Burger Bar and Truck Stop, where King of Clubs is based, enthuses:

“It’s a real darn’ tootin’ thang I tell ya – them there players kin git ‘emselves all kinda groovy stuff by playin’ alla mah games. There’s a shedload ta choose from an’ a ton o’ ways ta complete ‘em too. But ah should warn ya – that King Putt over near them big tranglier things…he kin be a real Bastet, so ya may wanna watch out fer him!

Y’all haul yer asses o’er here this summer an’ I’ll make sure our Britney gits ya somethin’ real hot…! Oh, an’ ah hear tell it’s possible ta git a hole in none too.”

Somewhat more comprehensibly, Oxygen Interactive’s publishing director, Kevin Hassall says:

“We’ve managed to take the mental challenge traditionally associated with puzzle games, and create a fresh, really quirky social experience that’s perfect for the way people play games today.”

With multiple game modes and the choice of matchplay or strokeplay for up to four players using either a multi-tap or sharing two controllers, plus the chance on every hole to score a one-shot win, King of Clubs will be available in August for PC, Wii™ and the PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. Nintendo DS™ and PSP® (PlayStation ®Portable) system versions will follow shortly thereafter. ...

Legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has told Entertainment Weekly that he believes Twilight Princess didn't do well in Japan because there are fewer and fewer people interested in playing big RPGs.

When asked his opinion on why Zelda isn't doing well in Japan, Miyamoto replied, "Well, I think a lot of people who bought the Wii are not necessarily the types of people who are interested in playing that kind of game. And a lot of the people who would want to play it [due to chronic shortages of the console] can't find a Wii! But mostly, I think it's that there are fewer and fewer people who are interested in playing a big role-playing game like Zelda."

In the interview Miyamoto also expressed his wish to create a game that makes those darn kids respect their elders: "In Japan, there are a lot of trains that have sections reserved for the elderly or pregnant women. Young people in Japan sometimes sit in them, but if people come up and need them, you are supposed to get up. But most of the kids don't! It really upsets me. If I could build a game that somehow made the young people respect their elders...

"And there is another issue bugging me. In Japan there are a lot of people who freelance or work under the table - people who don't pay any taxes. I look at places in the world where people understand that paying taxes to the government helps society. In Japan there's not that understanding. So [social responsibility] is yet another issue I might address in a game. But I probably sound like an old man when I bring these things up." ...

Blade Interactive - that of Snooker sim fame - has finally revealed it's impressive water-powered action game Hydrophobia, which is heading to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

It's being headed up by crack-coders including that of ex-Splinter Cell and Fable 2 descent, and revolves around the story of a super-ship that's been hijacked by naught nanobot-using terrorists.

The water technology is the real touting point of the game though; bubbling, splashing and lifting anything that isn't nailed to the floor.

But don't take our word for it, read Xbox World 360's world exclusive preview - with screenshots - right here.

Spider-Man 3 hit cinemas last week, alongside the massively disappointing game, but Activision's not stopping there as the firm launches a teaser site for Spider-Man: Friend or Foe.

Activision is holding back on details for now - having given CVG the swift "no comment" when we called - and the official site isn't packing much in the way of info, not even specifying formats for the title.

"A new twist on the Legend. A new take on the movies..." is all the site hints, along with placing the game's release at fall (autumn) 2007. Let's hope its much better than the Spider-Man 3 game, eh? ...

We saw the unveiling of Transformers: The Game back in March and weren't too impressed, but Activision promised, with a lengthy response, that the game was early in development and numerous improvements would come.

Looking at this new trailer , some graphical improvements have indeed been made. The robots look detailed and shiny, and the game seems to sport a typically next-gen blurry lighting effect.

We thought the 'Sports pack' range of Wii Remote extensions, which includes tennis racquet, golf club, and a steering wheel cases were about as crappy as it could get for Wii peripherals but we were wrong.

Chinese-based peripheral company, Firstsing, who was also responsible for the sports pack, has now released a USB-powered cooling fan which plugs into one of the Wii's USB ports and draws air from the vent at the back - where Nintendo has already positioned the built-in fan.

It is said to provide extra cooling for what we reckon is the one console that doesn't need any help in keeping itself cool, unless you live on the surface of the sun. What a pointless waste of money. ...
