Don't go thinking they care about the fuzziness of your American screens, this is a Japan thing. Nintendo of Japan's official site apologized for the lack of "D terminal" component cables (Japan has two types of component cable), leaving this blogger with just such a fuzzy screen. It's hard to complain too much though, what with the Japanese Wii launch being such a painless endeavor.

Local retailers are reporting that Nintendo overstocked, providing many more systems than anticipated. Accessories (that aren't component cables that is) are all readily available: Nunchuks, Wiimotes, and the lovely (not quite stateside yet) Hajimete no Wii (Wii Games) and Wiimote bundle are in abundance. Even the Classic Controller -- which comes free with purchases of 5,000 Wii points -- is readily available. ...

It would seem that much of the buzz Sony built for the PS3 launch is dying down; no doubt due to the system's MIA status from virtual store shelves. In a recent study, the Xbox 360's online demand has surpassed that of the PS3; the Wii has -- not surprisingly -- passed up both of them on the list of most online interest.

According to Compete.com, the interest in the Xbox 360 in major online retail outlets passed up the PS3 on November 25th, which is the same time Amazon.com offered up the $100 Xbox 360. Since October, interest in all three consoles grew at an increasing rate, but only the PS3 has suffered any sort of decline. Online demand for the PS3 is on a decline since the unit launched, most likely attributed to the fact people can't find them.

The method Compete.com used to obtain this information is a bit of a mystery. However, the data could show the dangers of trying to utilize a product's scarcity to drive demand. A hard to find product can drive the desire to have it, but make the product too difficult to find and people will just give up; which makes the competition -- who has ready supplies -- very happy. ...

Back at the Tokyo Game Show, I attended a Microsoft Community Event. There was a faceplate contest, no booze and Japanese schoolgirls. Not only were they the only schoolgirls there, they were the only girls.

I asked them why they were they, and they replied, "The faceplate contest." They had all made their own faceplates and entered them. I asked one of them, the one in the middle, how she got into the Xbox 360. Here's what she said:

I lived in New Zealand for a study abroad. And one of the going away presents I got was an Xbox 360 game... I didn't have an Xbox. So, I bought one when I got back to Japan.
She didn't remember the game, but it didn't work on her 360, she told me. The girl seemed sincere, and I could buy how she got into the system. And her friends, likewise, probably got into it due to overflowing enthusiasm. And that was the end of that story. Or so I thought.

Earlier today, tipster Daniel sent along this NSFW link which had four school girls taking sticker pictures with their 360 controllers, singing karaoke songs about the Xbox 360 with their controllers and talking about how great the "Ekubo" (Xbox 360) is on the streets of Shibuya. They've even got a blog in which they do things all normal Japanese schoolgirls — like talking about Tokyo Disney Sea, hairspray and how great UNO is using the Vision Camera. There are a handful of young women blogging at that site. I did a quick search, looking for the bought-to-you-by-your-friends-at-Microsoft, but turned up nothing. The NSFW site Daniel sent seems to think this is marketing, though.

Know: There are Japanese gamers who are fanatically insane about the 360. There are Japanese women who play the Xbox 360 (my wife, for example). But, this is the first time I've ever heard of h4rdc0r3 gamerz school girls who tote around their controllers and write songs about game consoles the love while blogging their exploits online. And I've been covering schoolgirl stuff for Wired Magazine for three years! It's possible, sure. As I mentioned above, the one I spoke did seem sincere.

Then again, maybe she was supposed to.

This is a big week for Microsoft in Japan as Thursday sees the release of Blue Dragon, its Japanese-developed RPG that's specifically aimed at tempting Japanese gamers to Xbox 360. Take a look at the images on the right and the game's intro on the movies tab above.

The original Xbox didn't perform that well in the Japanese market and many experts put this down to the lack of traditional RPGs available for the console, the type that is particularly popular over there. To make sure this isn't the case for 360, Microsoft hired Final Fantasy originator Hironobu Sakaguchi to oversee the development of Blue Dragon which uses the design of Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama.

The game follows the story of a boy named Shu, who has a shadow that can transform into a blue dragon. Not only that but he has mates who possess the power to summon other shadow creatures, so they team up and embark on a quest to save their world.

These new shots show the other creatures that can be summoned, each of them blue and suitably threatening.

The new footage is quite low-key but is actually the playable intro for the game. While it lacks a little in terms of action it gives you an idea of the quality of graphics, the type of music used and the way the levels can be explored.

Next-gen mech mashing game Armored Core 4 is out next year for PS3 and Xbox 360 - making it the first AC game to appear on a Microsoft console - and we've uncovered a handful of new screenshots for you.

Following on from Last Raven on PS2, Armored Core 4 will allow gamers to customise their mech in appearance and performance, but this time the choices will be so varied and vast that gamers can create a 100% original mech.

This fourth game in the series will also be the first Armored Core to be fully online allowing up to eight players to get involved with deathmatch challenges or team based battles.

Developer FromSoftware is resetting the storyline in order to allow gamers new to the series to feel more involved. Set some time in the future, six global corporations are battling for resources and land at a time when over-population has ravaged Earth. This conflict is, of course, settled by giant robot warfare.

Further proof that EA's NBA Street Homecourt will be one of the most realistic console games around comes in the form of these amazing new shots from the Xbox 360 title.

Of course, while the player models and animation might be photo-realistic the action will consist of the most over-the-top action imaginable.

The Homecourt in the title is a reference to where every NBA legend started on their road to stardom - performing mad skillz in their local playground, beating all comers and establishing a reputation. This is where the games action will take place as the greatest ballers in the world go up against each other in three-on-three games.

Who needs Zelda for the launch of Wii when addictive puzzler Super Fruitfall is hitting stores on 8 December alongside Nintendo's new console?

What looks like a simple puzzle game is actually a devious test of your strategy skills and coordination. The objective is to clear out every piece of fruit by moving them around the grid so they become grouped together. Sounds easy but each individual piece of fruit can only be moved by rotating the playing area in one of three moves.

On top of that you must figure out the best way to build combinations of fruit clearing to get special bonuses.

While the puzzle solving isn't so simple the control system certainly is. All gamers have to do is pick up the Wii-mote and start shifting the brightly coloured fruit pieces around.

If you want to get the family involved in the puzzling there's a split screen two-player option, so you can see who's better at clearing screens of fruit.

We have less than a week to wait for Super Fruitfall, which will only cost £25 when it's released on 8 December.

Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has confirmed that Wii gamers will be able to play games online from the second quarter of 2007. Reggie's pledge came in an interview with SpikeTV's Game Head show (which saw the Ninty president indulging in some bowling - of both the real-life and Wii variety), where he also let slip that more Wii channels were in the works.

So far, Japan is the only region with a Wii game [Pokémon Battle Revolution - Ed] that can be played online. However, that's set to change in the coming months, with Fils-Aime promising, "The multiplayer is coming. During the Japanese launch, there is Pokémon Battle Revolution, and that's really the first one. There will be titles that we'll be announcing in first quarter 2007, that'll be multiplayer-enabled. So during second quarter 2007, people will be able to have a multiplayer experience on Wii."

In further good news for Wii fans, Fils-Aime revealed that Nintendo was hard at work developing more Wii channels, though revealed nothing about what they would involve.

He was also kept busy when it came to defending the Wii controller from accusations that it may be a tad gimmicky. "I've had the opportunity to play Zelda, Excite Truck, Wii Sports, a little bit of Red Steel, a little bit of Madden," said Reggie. "It doesn't get old. It really doesn't get old. Wii will only become a gimmick if it's marginalised in terms of the way the remote is used, and we have absolutely no indication that that's going to happen."

Aside from that, Fils-Aime also discussed the "Wii60" phrase coined by Microsoft's Peter Moore ("Can I endorse the 360? Honestly, no"), the prospect of Mario appearing in a GTA-style game ("You'll never see that") what game he thinks would be best online ("The ultimate one would be Mario Kart, on a multiplayer basis"), and generally came across as a fairly good egg.

Mind you, his real-life bowling skills suck. ...
