A Gameworld Network opinion piece explores the implications of console wars which Wikipedia defines as "periods of intense competition for market share between video game console manufacturers." The author blames the obvious, competition, as the downfall for such beloved consoles like the Dreamcast, least he forgets the failures of the competitor (Sega in this case).

Excerpt here: "Does good competition offset the loss of great companies? Did videogames become better when the Dreamcast surrendered?... The console war brings with it great competition, which has created some of the best consoles around. But the console war has also had its share of casualties - some of which were some of the best consoles around. And that is why I think the console war, despite all of its good intentions, is not good for gaming."

Competition: It's a cruel world, folks.

    News from Gameradar

Manchester United will join the ranks of officially licensed teams for Pro Evolution Soccer 6, it has been confirmed today, along with Bayern Munich, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica, Olympiakos and the entire French top flight football league, the Ligue 1. PES 6 will also include official kits for the English, Italian, Spanish, Argentinean, French, Australian, Czech and Swedish national teams.

Additional info has also been confirmed for Pro Evolution Soccer 6 on PSP. The handheld version will now feature a Master League mode - although interactivity between PS2 and PSP ML teams has not been mooted - as well as a new camera angle offering a zoomed out view of the pitch to solve PSP's PES problems with long distance passing.

PS2 will also receive a boost in the form of new eight-player online matches. You'll be able to link up four machines, each with two players, to kick off these packed games, and we have it on strong authority that the crippling lag issue - where one half of an online match would always be near-impossible to play - has finally been sorted.

So even though Apple's investigation of the Chinese manufacturing plant that's come to be known as "iPod City" found no egregious violations in the working conditions (except for, you know, the long hours, military-like punishments, and not exactly "Cribs"-style living arrangements), at least one major trade union conglomerate isn't all that happy with its conclusions. Speaking to BBC News, the director of human and trade union rights at the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, Janek Kuczkiewicz, noted that his organization was "not impressed either by the report or by the findings of Apple." Most troubling to the ICFTU was the fact that only 100 of the over 30,000 employees working at the Foxconn-owned plant were interviewed by Apple's special investigative team; and since the conditions under which the interviews were held is unknown (i.e. were they being watched by supervisors and told to just smile and nod?), Kuczkiewicz stressed that "we have serious reservations about the report." He went on to point out that there are other labor standards such as the freedoms from discrimination, of association, and to bargain collectively that were not necessarily enjoyed by the Foxconn employees. While it's certainly admirable that not everyone is simply lauding Apple for its inquiry and assuming massive changes are underway, it's also important to realize that when doing business in a foreign country, outside corporations don't always have the final say on how things are run; so as much as Mr. Kuczkiewicz would like to see the workers band together and demand $5.15 an hour, we're not sure how well that would go over with the Chinese government. Unfortunately, the reality of the situation is that manufacturers are driving each other to find cheaper and cheaper labor in order to maintain already thin margins, and when that's the case, even a company as rich and powerful as Apple can do little to create the utopic working conditions that we'd all like to see. ...

Nobody touches Big Brother's Apple's OS until they're good and ready -- not nobody. Apparently not even Apple employees are beyond the long arm of the law, since a few Apple Retail employees have been sacked after being overheard by the Thought Police co-workers while discussing their evil deeds, and were subsequently reported to corporate. Their crime? Downloading the WWDC edition of Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard that was handed out to developers at the recent keynote and has been popping up on file sharing sites of late. At least five employees have been fired so far, with "dozens" more facing electroshock therapy expulsion. When questioned about their actions, the employees fessed up to the crime, and they seemed to think Apple was in the right for giving them the boot, though they do wonder if they'd still have their jobs if they'd hadn't admitted to downloading Leopard. Guess you'll never know now, eh Honest Abe? ...

You gotta love the litigousness of youth -- especially when there's an iPod involved. A spat over a missing iPod resulted in a lawsuit in Wheaton, Illinois, when 14-year-old Shannon Derrik sued her (now former) friend Stephanie Eick for losing her brand new iPod. It seems that Shannon made the fool mistake of lending her iPod to Stephanie, who decided it'd be a good idea to give back the iPod by leaving it on Shannon's desk rather than waiting for her to return from the restroom to hand it over in person. The iPod managed to disappear -- apparently someone in that classroom had some sticky fingers -- and so Shannon sued for $475 in damages and court fees (she says she did a LOT of babysitting to pay for that iPod). The case was initially tossed because of an improper filing, but it looks like the two girls will finally square off in court in about a month (the word on the street is that they're gearing up for a serious showdown in the cafeteria when school starts up again). ...

Nintendo's Leipzig Press conference has just finished in Germany and while the world waited with baited breath for revelations on the Wii's price point and release day, the big N has held its fire - quite probably and properly - for the Tokyo Games Show and merely announced two new Wii games and a pink DS for release in Europe.

'Slightly low key' is the assessment from our man on the spot, and to be honest we'd heard similar rumblings in the run up to the show that the big N wouldn't be making a huge announcement splash.

However some cheer for Nintendo fans in the form of Battlion Wars II for the Nintendo Wii, which will be known BWii (ah, very clever), plus a new Wii version of Mario Strikers Charged which were both demo-ed to much acclaim.

Nintendo's intention to expand the handheld market was also bolstered by the announcement of a new Noble Pink iteration (pictured) of the DS Lite with specifically targetted for the woman about town, which will launch across Europe on October 27

And that's about yer lot, says our man at the show, but keep 'em peeled for announcements and highlights from the Microsoft and Sony conferences appearing later today. ...

Bully has attracted a fair amount of controversy in its short life-span, with many US and UK commentators getting a bit premature and decrying - before actually have seen so much as a pixel - this terrible new Bully simulator, whose release, as usual, would mean the end of civilisation as we know it.

The reality is somewhat different of course as this second trailer from Rockstar's latest shows, with some footage and cut-scenes evoking memories of the halcyon and harmless fun of classic Speccy outing Skool Daze.

Definitely worth checking out, we'll be checking the elastic's still working on our catapults for the game's release next month, with a full and frank hands-on preview on Rockstar's latest heading your way soonest.
