nVidia chief Jen-Hsun Huang has gone on record with the San Jose Mercury News to sing the praises of the PS3 and its associated Blu-ray technology, even going so far as to call the console's delay to incorporate Sony's next-gen disk format a 'master stroke'.

The nVidia CEO was supremely confident that the company had backed the right horse this time around after his nVidia originally supplied the GPU for Xbox One, while this time it's providing GPUs for both the Nintendo Wii and Sony's PlayStation 3.

Huang said, "I don't think that working with Sony is wrong. There is no way that is going to be wrong. There are many wonderful things that Sony did. I'm excited that they made Blu-ray high-definition storage as a standard part of the PlayStation 3 platform."

Huang continued, "To postpone it by a few months so they could include Blu-Ray was a master stroke. When that comes out, it's going to look so much more advanced than last-generation game consoles. I think that was a wonderful call on their part."

The nVidia chief also had a warning for Microsoft saying, "I'm not sure how Microsoft is going to do in this transition. They are clever and they will figure out a way. I'll make a prediction that Xbox 360 can't possibly be a DVD-only device by Christmas of next year."

Huang also believes that Blu-ray is the format that is set to dominate proceedings for the next decade, opining, "The important thing is you cannot announce a game console for the next ten years and not have Blu-Ray ...If I'm going to buy a next-generation game console, I'm going to buy a console with next-generation media. It's going to last ten years."

The nVidia boss isn't apparently bothered by the PS3's uber price tag either, making a direct comparison to the PS2's price point when it was launched, "PlayStation 2 was launched seven years ago in Japan at about $399. If you use inflation, it's the same price, approximately." ...

Epic Games, the studio behind massive Xbox 360 shooter Gears of War are planning to make a big announcement next week, according to a post made by Mark Rein on the game's official forum.

We know nothing more than that for now, but Rein has since suggested the announcement won't be the long awaited Gears' release date, telling one forum user "maybe the announcement that is going to be made isn't what you think it is."

So if it's not the release date what could it be? Rein's enlarged and underlined emphasis of the word 'big' suggests that it'll be more than just a bunch of Xbox Live gamerpics, but with the Epic boss suddenly going mysteriously silent (there has to be a first time for everything), we'll just have to wait and see what he's got in mind within seven days time. ...

Dead or Alive mastermind Tomonobu Itagaki has hinted that he might make another Dead or Alive beat 'em up once he's finished making volleyball spin-off, Dead or Alive X2.

Speaking to 1UP, Itagaki revealed that he isn't completely satisfied with last series offering, DOA4: "When I play DOA4 online simply as a gamer in my own right," he said, "I occasionally have times when I think I should have done something differently." He continues: "At the moment, I am making several other games; after I have brought those to completion I will be more ready to talk about the future of Kasumi and company."

Excellent news for beat 'em-up fans for sure. More good news comes this morning in the form of a new DOA4 demo, which has just hit Xbox Live. The demo weighs in at 680MB and features two modes, five stages and six playable characters. Itagaki says the odd timing of the demo (DOA4 was released more than six months ago) was to encourage new 360 owners to try the game out. ...

It's been all quiet on the Metal Gear front since the stunning fourth instalment was detailed at this year's E3. But despite being in the thick of development, series mastermind Hideo Kojima recently found time to attend the San Diego Comic Con, where one intrepid message board user managed to extract a few fresh tidbits of MGS4 info.

According to the photo-filled message board post, Kojima revealed at the Comic Con that MGS4 will be fully playable at next year's E3, dashing any hopes of hands-on action at this year's Tokyo Game Show. Apparently, Kojima also blurted that the MGS4 team is aiming for 1080p support in the game at Sony's request, and that he is currently trying out several ideas with the PS3's motion sensing controller, including using it to snap enemy's necks.

Talking about his other big series, Kojima also apparently revealed that he has an idea for a new Zone of the Enders game, which should please fans fearing poor sales had put an end to the series.

In other MGS-related news, Kojima Productions also revealed today its plans for the Leipzig Games Convention, where no less than four MGS titles will be on show. Guns of the Patriots will apparently be represented via a "spectacular video trailer," although it's unclear at this point whether it will be a new trailer of simply a rehash of what we've seen at E3. Brand new we'd suspect and indeed hope.

We'll be on hand at the Leipzig Games Convention next month to find out. ...

According to Nintendo, since its launch on November 24 2004, the DS has sold more than 21 million units. Apparently, that equates to 23 units per minute, or one-ish every two seconds.

Needless to say, Nintendo's pretty chuffed with itself, with NoA senior vice president George Harrison gushing, "We're thrilled to be announcing this milestone today, especially since Nintendo DS was North America's top-selling video game system of any type in June. We attribute this success to Nintendo's overall strategy of offering something for everyone - from five-year-olds caring for their Nintendogs to 65-year-olds tuning their mental agility with Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day."

With DS sales ballooning further, thanks to the recently released - and rather luscious - DS Lite, Nintendo has seen a revenue increase of 85 percent for the period of April to June this year, compared to the same timeframe in 2005. That, number crunchers, means a rise to 130.9 billion yen (1.1 billion USD), from 70.7 billion yen (605.9 million USD). Profits-wise, Nintendo has seen a Q1 increase of 10.2 percent from last year, with the figure rising from 14.1 billion yen (120.8 million USD) to 15.6 billion yen (133.6 million USD).

With Nintendo predicting its forthcoming Wii console will flog six million units between release and next March - alongside 17 million Wii games - things are looking rosy for the company right now. Reports that Satoru Iwata is going out for a curry with his mates to celebrate are currently unfounded.

To compliment yesterday's next-gen trailer, Activision has released a fresh selection of screenshots showing off Tony Hawk's Project 8, which kick-flips into the shops later this year.

So what new gameplay elements can we expect from Tony Hawk's next-gen outing? Well, Activision promises brand new game objectives like film and photo goals, an enhanced physics system and a new "impress the locals" function, where you can pull off tricks for civilians and gain yourself "respect." Drive-bys and board-pimping are unfortunately unconfirmed.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 lands on PS2, PSP, PS3 and both Xboxes in the autumn.

As Tuesday rears its ugly head and laughs mockingly in that 'I'm not quite a Monday but I'll be damned if I'm going to give you the satisfaction of being midway through the working week' way, we delve into our bag of heaving regularity and thrust, with vigour, this week's Chart Track all format full-price Top 20 in your general direction.

Proving, as if proof were needed, that grandmas should stick to their wild orgies of wrinkled shunting and bingo, instead of venturing into their local game emporium, ready to shaft a huge fist of rebellion up the gaming charts, THQ's Pixar movie tie-in Cars screeches into pole position from last week's number thirteen - remember kids: talking cars aren't cool and your friends will steal your pocket money if they find out what you've bought.

At two this week, Mario demonstrates that even bonafide videogame legends need a break sometimes, with a distinct lack of movement at number two. Three sees Pirates of the Caribbean: The Legend of Jack Sparrow sail up from number seven, while more timbers a-shiver and decks a-swab at four with Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.

Down to five from last week's top spot, Prey more than lives up to its name, despite the general embarrassment of slumping down the food chain beneath a vacuous CGI truck, and there's more tempestuous descent from five to six for FIFA World Cup Germany 2006, while seven sees a tumble from four for Ubisoft's Over the Hedge.

As the rest of the charts sinks into the mulch of despair, Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-Earth II slides from six to eight, Tomb Raider: Legend drops one to nine and Hitman: Blood Money proves equally fallible, slipping one to ten.

Of course, there's another ten positions to get through but, as general apathy threatens to engulf our enthusiasm completely, you'll have to cast your eyes below for the rest of this week's charts. Below that, there's a heaving bevvy of fun for PC gamers too, so scroll - scroll like your index finger is malfunctioning.
