Starting Now at Game Stores in the UK, heres the details:

    Q. What's this Nintendo 24 Hour Spectacular! business all about then?
    A. Simple, it's a great deal, every hour, for 24 hours, where all deals will relate to Nintendo. The golden rule to bear in mind is when its gone, its gone.

    Q. These offers end a bit quickly don't they? How do I take advantage?
    A. If you're one of the of customers who completes checkout before either the stock or the time runs out then you'll have grabbed a great bargain! Remember that thousands of people are watching the event ready to jump on these offers - and not everyone is going to be able to do so.

    Q. How do I buy a product from the promotion?
    A. Hit the "Buy" button and follow the checkout process through as you normally would - if you haven't used it before, don't worry, it's easy to follow.

    Q. One minute it said there were 50 units left, but the next thing I know they've all gone!?
    A. The stock ticker updates as people buy items from the sale, but you need to hit "Refresh" on your browser in order to see the latest information.

    Q. Can I buy more than one unit of an offer?
    A. No, not of the same offer - it's limited to one per customer. The system just won't allow you to buy two or more of one product. However, you can, of course, take advantage of as many different offers as you want to.

    Heres what he said

Two out of three of the players have bet you don't need it. Nintendo has bet you don't even need HD for the next five years.

Nintendo's perspective has always been different. The platforms that are being built now are not just game consoles. You use it for all kinds of other kinds of applications. In the case of Nintendo, they wanted to build a game console. They built a wonderful game device. Their focus is games and enjoyment. They will be myopically focused on that. I think that is terrific. Their perspective is different from the other two. If I'm going to buy a next-generation game console, I'm going to want next-generation media. ...

Joy to the world, another dock. At least this time it's not for the iPod, but for the Sony PSP. From RockRidgeSound comes the PST-02 Sound Terminal, a PSP dock that tries to make us believe that 2.1-channel stereo sound is some sort of major scientific breakthrough. The dock, which will be available in both black and white, features a 2.75-inch subwoofer to drop all those low frequency, hip hop beats. Word.

The speakers proper pump sound out at 2.4 watts, if 2.4 watts is enough to constitute "pumping." Like every other dock on this planet, it can accept other audio sources because of the inclusion of a 3.5-mm stereo input as well as charge the intended device. Jupiter be praised.

The PST-02 Sound Terminal hits Japan early August for around $68. ...

    news from gamesindustry

Nintendo has released its Q1 financial statement, showing continued strong sales for the DS handheld and its associated software - which have helped drive the company's profits up by ten per cent.

For the period ended June 30th, the company posted a net income of 15.6 billion Yen (105.9 million Euro), compared to 14.1 billion Yen (95.7 million Euro) for the previous year.

Net sales for the quarter reached 130.9 billion Yen (888.9 million Euro), up a massive 85 per cent on the 70.7 billion Yen for the same quarter a year earlier.

It's been suggested that the ongoing success of the DS and the recently introduced DS Lite have been responsible for growing the Japanese gaming market by 30 per cent - and the handheld has also performed well in the West.

After a positive US launch for the DS Lite, the company brought the redesigned handheld to Europe, shifting in excess of 200,000 units in the first ten days after launch.

As a result, Nintendo has significantly raised its full fiscal year forecast for the period ending March 31st, 2007. The company is projecting annual profits of 83 billion Yen (563.3 million Euro), compared to its earlier forecast of 65 billion Yen (441 million Euro).

Net sales are predicted to reach 640 billion Yen (4.4 billion Euro), up 40 billion Yen on earlier estimates from the firm.

Nintendo is committed to expanding the reach of the gaming market with the introduction of its novel gameplay ideas and controller innovations such as the touch-screen device, and looks set to further expand its reach with the forthcoming release of its low-cost, high innovation games console, the Nintendo Wii. ...

Nintendo announced today that sales of its hand-held, dual-screened video game player, the Nintendo DS, have topped 20 million worldwide (guesstimates say 21,270,000). Nintendo expects DS (Lite) sales to be 17 million between April 2006 and March 2007. From today's financial report: "The company raised its full-year sales forecast of the DS handheld game players to 17 million units for the year ending March 2007, up from 16 million unit sales projection made in May. Sales of DS game titles are projected to rise to 75 million units, from 70 million." The report references PSP owners as just combat-game fans, while the DS is said to target a wider audience with more diverse games such as the 6 million seller Nintendogs ...

THQ has confirmed to Eurogamer that the next instalment in the WWE SmackDown series will not be appearing on PlayStation 3.

A statement from the publisher reads: "The highly anticipated WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2007 is scheduled to ship for Xbox 360, PSP and PlayStation 2 in November.

"Consistent with our goal of delivering the highest quality content across all next-gen platforms, we have decided to postpone the debut of the SmackDown series on PlayStation 3 until the holiday 2007 timeframe."

In other words, they're by no means abandoning the PS3 altogether. SmackDown 2008 will indeed be available for Sony's next-gen console when the game hits shops next year. ...

At the Comic-Con held in San Diego last week, Marvel and Bungie announced plans to launch a new monthly comic titled Halo Ongoing.

As you might have guessed, it'll be based around the hit Xbox shooter, but that's all there is to report so far - there's no word on the comic's plotline, or on which artists and writers have been signed up to produce it.

Halo Ongoing is set to appear in shops later this year, following the release of the Halo Graphic Novel. As previously announced, the 128-page book will go on sale in the US this July, and its storyline will focus on the battles between the Covenant and the Flood. ...

    News from CVG

We could probably build a small fort out of the boxes of all of the Tony Hawk's games released so far, but the franchise is still skating smoothly with new next-gen offering Project 8 hitting the park later this year.

This new Project 8 gameplay movie shows off the visually-pleasing next-gen version of the game, which, along with a brand new game engine, features pro skaters who've been stuck into proceedings using fancy 3D body scan technology. Along with this technical tomfoolery, Project 8 promises more goals, side-missions and mini-games than any other Tony Hawk game before. Let's hope it manages to breathe new life into the ageing series.

Tony Hawk's Project 8 skates in on PS2, PS3, PSP and both flavours of Xbox this autumn.

MS reveals the new Zune handheld, but will we get a slice of portable gaming action from the Redmond giant?

The ongoing saga of the Microsoft handheld has finally been put to rest over the weekend, with the Redmond giant finally confirming its development of the Zune portable music player.

Chris Stephenson, Microsoft's new GM of marketing for MSN Entertainment Business, revealed all - in an interview with Billboard - stating that the first project under the Zune moniker will be a portable music player and digital music service, set to compete directly with the current market leaders, iPod and iTunes.

No direct confirmation of any gaming functionality is our first major WTF! - as we'd been hoping J Allard's ultra-secret project would encompass this mighty world we call gaming from the off. However before we reach for our anti-despair pills, Zuneinfo.com has revealed that "additional Zune-branded devices will follow, including a portable video player and, potentially, a portable game device". Stephenson apparently would not comment on the videogame element of future Zune iterations - however, he did confirm that the inaugural MS music hub will use the much-discussed Wi-Fi connection for wireless Internet access.

With Wi-Fi a key component, future Zunes already have the foundation for multiplayer gaming just like the DS and PSP and - with Microsoft's ethos of compatibility across all platforms - the gaming foundation is there. "The ability to connect the different devices is a key part of the strategy," said Stephenson. "Whether it's a portable media device, or a phone, or the Xbox or Media Center PC, the idea is you can access your entertainment from anywhere."

Due to hit stores (Stateside at least) prior to Xmas, expect the mighty Zune marketing machine to roll out towards the latter end of the year. The focus at first will undoubtedly be music and video, but we'll certainly keep a close eye on any further gaming clues. However in the meantime, you can hold forth frothing and rampant speculation about what implications the Zune player might have for a future Xbox portable in the comments below. ...
