We were surprised to hear Nintendo announce a brand new game at its spring media summit this morning - we were not surprised that said game was another Mario sports title.

Mario Super Sluggers will arrive in Japan in June and elsewhere "later this year," featuring the requisite number of mascot characters and suitably silly gameplay.

We were treated to a brief demo that showed a 5-inning match between the Mario Fireballs (firebats?) and the Peach Royals. Each team consists of a captain and what we assume will be the Mario second stringers (Shy Guys, Koopas etc), similar to the Striker games.

Control is, according to Nintendo's Bill Trinen, much like Wii Sports in both pitching and batting. The former is done by holding a button, winding up and releasing when blue halos close in around the character; the latter by simply holding the remote and swinging.

Both forms have supercharged attacks that distract or hinder the other player; we saw Mario's fire pitch scream past a batter, and later, Mario's fire swing ignite an unlucky Donkey Kong out in left field.

Sluggers is meant to be a "bridge game," in that it takes a setup casual players know (Wii Sports) and adds layers to it that core gamers already know.

For example, there is actual fielding in Sluggers, whereas Wii Sports handled all the running and catching. However, instead of introducing a deep control system, Sluggers uses only the remote and has you primarily waggling to run, waggling to throw and waggling to do just about anything else.

There wasn't any hands-on time so we can't say for sure if this simplified scheme helps or hurts the experience from a core gamer's perspective.

In a welcome twist, Sluggers actually looks decent, though perhaps not as a big leap over GameCube's Superstar Baseball as Galaxy was over Sunshine.

Expect much more as the game's ambiguous release date draws near. If it's June in Japan, and baseballers are lovingly refereed to as "the boys of summer," we'd be shocked to see it come any later than August. ...

Konami has said the European Metal Gear Online beta will run from 21st April to 6th June.

The client will be available to download from 17th April, as Sony told us earlier.

Two of the five maps from the full game will be available to mess around on: Blood Bath and Groznyi Grad.

The former is two-tiered scenario, while the latter is that big (and fantastically named) Shagohod complex from MGS3 that has human catapults to throw you around.

The other three joining these at launch are Ambush Alley with its trenches and sandbags; Midtown Maelstrom with its Middle Eastern alleyways; and Urban Ultimatum with its rooftops.

Metal Gear Online will be released alongside Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots on 12th June around the world.

It lets 16 of you fire bullets at each other online, in the hope that one will penetrate and cause massive internal bleeding and lead to death. And then respawn.

There are Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture Base and Sneaking missions. It's plenty of fun, too, as you can find out in our first impressions of Metal Gear Online. ...

On April 15, in case you've forgotten, Bungie's second map pack for Halo 3 launches onto Xbox Live for download and the developer's taking us in deep in a new video.

In addition to featuring in-game footage of the levels, there's chat from designers and artists that have worked on the maps about design (funnily enough) and technical features. It's viewable in our video player.

Halo 3 Legendary Map Pack will set you back 800 Microsoft Points when it releases, and includes maps Avalanche, Blackout and Ghost Town.

505 Games and restaurant chain Yo! Sushi have announced a partnership to promote DS game Cooking Mama 2.

The publisher will place DS consoles on the restaurant's conveyor belts, allowing diners to sample the game, rolling out the promotion from London to over 30 outlets over the coming months.

"The Yo! Sushi brand is colourful, cool, fun and essentially Japanese, which are all values shared with our Tokyo developed Cooking Mama series," commented Ian Howe MD of 505 Games.

"This is going to be an exciting and creative campaign and we’re looking forward to getting some great feedback from family sushi diners across the UK."

The BBC iPlayer is only available on Nintendo Wii because Microsoft and Sony wanted to control the iPlayer, a BBC official has stated.

According to a blog post by technology editor Darren Waters, BBC future technology controller Erik Huggers said: "If you want to get on the PlayStation or Xbox, they want control of the look, the feel and the experience; they want it done within their shop, and their shop only."

Nintendo, in contrast, has apparently been more than happy to upgrade its internet browser to work with the existing BBC site.

Also in the post, Waters clarified the confusion over whether or not yesterday's announcement included a separate Wii channel: "[Nintendo is offering a dedicated channel, which acts as a one click button to the iPlayer service."

So whilst you can currently access the iPlayer using your internet browser, soon there'll be a dedicated channel making access direct.

Which should please those who didn't download the browser for free and were complaining yesterday they'd have to shell out Wii Points to watch Doctor Who on their Wii. ...

Rockstar has appealed to the Australian government to introduce an R18+ rating for the region.

Its comments follow the decision to cut Grand Theft Auto IV in order that it meet the current MA15+ upper-limit so it can go on sale.

"We strongly support the [Office of Film and Literature Classification ] and will continue to work within their guidelines; however, we believe the government needs to bring games in line with other media by introducing an R18+ rating, or edits to games will continue to be necessary," said Rockstar in a statement.

"We encourage consumers to let their politicians know that they support an R18+ rating for games."

Rockstar has reassured those worried that cuts to GTA IV will not compromise the quality of the game nor significantly change the experience.

"While there are some minor differences between the Australian and US/EU versions, they are not significant and we do not believe they take away from the level of scope and detail that make GTA IV such an incredible experience," the publisher stated.

"We would not release the game in Australia if we believed these differences compromised the quality of the game in any way."

Grand Theft Auto IV was given an 18 certificate in the UK for having saucy and violent content. ...

One of the biggest complaints about Factor 5's PlayStation 3 debut title appears to have been addressed. Sony Japan provided first details today on a free update for Lair, and included in the bullet points is the option for analog controls!

The update will also offer the ability to show a targeting icon, and Dual Shock 3 rumble support.

Sony is making a few additional downloads available for the game as well. Lair owners will be able to download the Wind Dragon and Poison Dragon for use in all stages. All PS3 owners will have access to a couple of themes which can be used to spice up the system's main interface. These downloads will also be free.

The new downloads will arrive in Japan on the 17th, and presumably throughout the world at around the same time. ...

A new F-Zero game for Wii will be unveiled by Nintendo at E3, currently named as F-Zero Z.

According to German website Nintendo-Planet.de, the new title will feature all the tracks of F-Zero GX and include an online mode.

More cryptically, the site also states that "a weapon system has also been confirmed". We imagine that has more to do with the Babel Fish translation missing something subtle in the language, though.

We're waiting back from Nintendo to deny its very existence, but the rumours would coincide with Reggie's hint that we should expect something big at this year's E3. ...
