Well this certainly explains why the highly anticipated Super Smash Bros. Brawl didn't show up on the European release list we told you about earlier. Videogamer.com contacted Nintendo upon noticing the omission, and was told that SSBB wasn't due out in Europe until after the second quarter of 2008. That means post June, for a game coming out in January in Japan and February in the US. Ouch. I would suggest that Europeans start shopping for a North American Wii, but apparently we don't have any. I really feel for you folks across the pond right now. The comment section is here for you. Let it all out. ...

Just under a fortnight ago, we found that the audio input pins on the iPod touch were indeed active and able to record audio. Now, a modder has constructed a smallish dock appendage that plugs directly into the touch and enables you to input audio. Apparently, the gizmo sports a built-in microphone and pre-amp, which could theoretically be used in VoIP applications or for recording simple voice notes. It seems as though the creator is offering these up to anyone interested, but you'll have to drop him an email to find out how much such an accessory will run you. ...

Square Enix has just pumped our inbox full of screenshots, and we've moved mountains (well, clicked a few buttons) to bring them to your attention.

First up, Dragon Quest Swords: The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors on Wii, which is out spring 2008.

Dragon Quest Swords: TMQATTOM (for short), concentrates heavily on fighting with the Wii Remote used like a sword to slash up enemies. "Slice at enemies, parry with your shield and block attacks to launch powerful counter-combos", Square Enix says of the combat.

Next, Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings on DS, which is set a year on from events portrayed in FFXII. It apparently "answers all your questions about what happens next to your heroes Vaan, Penelo, Fran and Balthier". It's out February 15, 2008.

Finally, The World Ends with You (DS) is a modern-day-setting adventure out spring '08. It's from the folks behind the Kingdom Hearts series.

Here's the scoop on the plot from Square Enix: "Set in Tokyo's trendiest district, the story begins with the lead character Neku waking up to find a phone message stating he has only 7 days before he will cease to exist.

"Only with the coolest fashions, friends and fighting skills can Neku restore hope to the city's population and prevent being stricken from existence altogether!"

The ten most dangerous games, as called by US group National Institute on Media and the Family, have been revealed. Though it's probably a little too late for the Christmas spending frenzy that's already in full swing.

The list has been designed to help parents decide what games are appropriate for their children, just in case they can't see the massive 'M For Mature' rating on the box.

"There's an endless stream of new games that will never be suitable for children," said Rep. Betty McCollum. That's because adults like games too.

The report also took a pop at retailers, mums and dads and us, citing "growing complacency" among game retailers, parents and the gaming industry on ratings and enforcing them. Sounds a bit like panic fire.

"Unfortunately, we're seeing some steps backwards," said institute president David Walsh. You're not helping.

But the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) stepped up as official defenders of the faith. "At a time of year when parents are looking for helpful guidance about video games, this year's report card does little more than sow unwarranted doubt about effective tools like ESRB ratings," said ESRB president Patricia Vance.

All ten games are indeed rated M-rated. They are:

    • Assassin's Creed
    • Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
    • Conan
    • The Darkness
    • Clive Barker's Jericho
    • Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
    • Manhunt 2
    • Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles
    • John Woo Presents Stranglehold
    • Timeshift

Nintendo's Wii was the most searched-for product in November, according to a survey of British online shoppers, reports Reuters. DS came in just behind at the second most searched for product.

The survey was done by online search analyst Hitwise who pointed out the obvious that Wii was well ahead of rivals such as Xbox 360. It didn't even mention PS3.

In third place were Ugg boots (ask your daughter or sister because your mum really should have grown up by now). They're "chunky sheepskin boots" worn by celebs such as Kate Moss, Sienna Miller and Kylie Minogue.

Highest traditional Christmas toy was Lego with those awful Bratz dolls at five. iPhone came in sixth and iPod ranked seventh. Been around the block Barbie was the eighth most searched product, followed by the iPod Nano and... the Xbox 360!

They must have stopped searching after that because there was no 11 or 12. ...

Ninja Reflex is a party game for Wii (and DS) that'll test your ninja, er, reflexes.

Basically, you'll be hit with a number of martial arts-related challenges which you must pull of with the precision of Bruce Lee. Reaction times are measured to the millisecond, we're told.

You're ultimate goal in single-player is to earn a black belt, while you can also try and out-ninja other ninjas in multiplayer.

"Ninja Reflex channels the accessible multiplayer fun of Wii Sports and the self-improvement aspect of Brain Age into a martial arts universe that is ideally suited for the Wii and Nintendo DS," says David Luntz, president and CEO of Nunchuck Games which is co-publishing the game with EA.

Ninja Reflex ninjas into shops next March. Have a look at the Wii screenshots if you're ninja enough. ...

The latest issue of Japanese Famitsu magazine reveals Phantasy Star Portable for the PSP. Excellent news we thought, then noticed that it's just a port of PS2 and 360 effort Phantasy Star Universe... without the online stuff.

Phantasy Star Portable (to avoid confusion we won't refer to it as 'PSP') is based on the PS2 and 360 MMO and its upcoming expansion, with the addition of new missions and story points.

Unfortunately the online mode - the focus point of PSU - has been reduced to 4-player wireless multiplayer. Disappointing, but if they can cut off the story fluff for wireless games it could turn out to be a harmless, fun hack-n-slash.

The handheld version is being handled (ho ho!) by Japanese developer Alpha System, who we (and our mate Google) have never heard off. Lets cross our fingers together. ...

For two organizations that claim to have the same interests in mind, one would think the ESRB and NIMF would get along just fine. But the two organizations who place parents and children on a pedestal are butting heads once again.

Following the release of this year's annual Video Game Report Card, in which NIMF gave the games industry a lukewarm "C" overall, ESRB president Patricia Vance defended strides made in the ratings system and parental awareness.

She said in a statement she appreciates the praise given to the ESRB in the report (the ESRB received a "B"), but added, "...In many significant ways, this year's NIMF Report Card contradicts recent Federal Trade Commission (FTC) findings related to parents' awareness, use and satisfaction with ESRB ratings, as well as retailer support of the ratings."

Vance noted how the FTC found in a recent study that 87 percent of parents were satisfied with the ESRB ratings and found them helpful.

NIMF accused the ESRB of mishandling Manhunt 2, a game that the ESRB initially rated "adults only," essentially barring the title from release in a public controversy. Developer Rockstar censored the intense violence that had been flagged, and achieved a less restrictive "mature" rating for the game months after the game was originally scheduled for release.

However, the PSP version of Manhunt 2 still contained violent content, although it was only made accessible by users who hacked into the handheld. NIMF in effect said the "ratings process has not kept up with technological advances."

Vance added in her response, "NIMF exhibits a significant lack of understanding of and, as a result, grossly misrepresents the facts surrounding last month's hack into pirated versions of Manhunt 2.

"...At a time of year when parents are looking for helpful guidance about video games, this year's Report Card does little more than sow unwarranted doubt about effective tools like ESRB ratings."

Japan aren't just crazy about Monster Hunter Freedom 2. They go bananas for Monster Hunter Freedom 2. But until now, we've rarely been able to express that feeling to you in numbers that matter. Thankfully, Capcom have provided us with some numbers that matter. According to them, the game has now sold over 1.5 million units at retail since launch. Consider, then, that there are an estimated 6 million PSPs in the wild in Japan, and you see that one in four own the game. Or 25%. Whichever way works best for you. Either way, that's loads. ...
