If you're a Wii owner, you'll probably fall into one of two camps when it comes to Nintendo's channel updates. Either you'll consider them harmless added value with just enough addictive whimsy to keep you occupied for a couple of minutes in moments of vague boredom, or you'll be on the side that bangs and wails and upends tables, frothing and glowering at the injustice of it all. 'Why are you wasting all this time when you could be making games?!', you'll bleat at anyone who'll listen - usually on internet forums. 'How dare you foresake me with your dedication to the casuals, Nintendo?', you'll shout. Camp number one: we have an update! Camp number two: bugger off.

Yes, that's right, mere hours after our American cousins, Nintendo has flung its gift of popularity at unsuspecting European Wiis in the shape of the Mii Contest Channel. Previously, Nintendo has referred to its long-promised update as the Check Mii Out Channel, including in its latest US press release, so we're not quite sure what happened there.

Anyway, in case you've not been paying attention, the basic premise this time around is the wholesale whoring of those Miis you probably created when you first got your console then completely forgot about 20 minutes later. With the advent of the Mii Contest Channel, you can frogmarch the pinnacle of your creativity right out in front of adoring eyes, ready to be judged, insulted or revered.

Nintendo's Mii Contest Channel comes in two parts - the Posting Plaza and Contests. The first lets you share your funny-faced creations with the world, swiping anything you might take a particular fancy to, and the second presents a variety of theme competitions to participate in. The general idea is that you whisk up a Mii to match the task then upload the fella, ready to be judged by Wii users across the globe. It's then possible to keep yourself updated on your progress via the 'Results' tab and see how close your Mii is to victory.

There's not much to report on the latter section of the channel just yet, given that Nintendo is operating contests on a fortnightly cycle - the first week offering ample time to prep your Mii around the given theme (currently 'Mario without his hat' in honour of upcoming Super Mario Galaxy'), ready for upload via the Submit panel and the second week for voting all entrants. This being the case, we've got no idea how the voting process actually works right now, with most of the Contest section inaccessible until next week.

Of far more interest is the Posting Plaza, which is already heaving with an impressive roster of nifty Miis. Currently gathered under the heading of 'Today's Top Miis', you'll find an amazing spectrum of familiar faces including - in no particular order - Peter Griffin, Mr. T, Mario, Darth Vadar, South Park's Kenny, Ali G, Jack Black and, er, Hitler. These are all gleaned from either a regional or worldwide selection, but you're free to alter that on a whim.

Miis can be viewed based on a number of categories, including Top 50, Pot Luck and your own personal Favourites. It's also possible to search for Miis via either their unique reference code (looking not unlike Nintendo's dreaded Friend-related digits of doom) or by a combination of gender and 'talent'. You can select your Mii's particular talent during the posting process and these cover a wide range of activities including Comedy, Acting, Art, Athletics and Conversation. Clearly we got bored of scrolling down the list after the letter 'C'. Finally, you can also check out Miis based on Mii Artisan Rankings. Here, you'll find a list of top-rated Artisans (that is, the Mii you've chosen to represent yourself on the Contest Channel) and all their majestic creations for easy browsing.

However you choose to check out Miis, they're all displayed in static groups of 50 on the main screen. Static, that is, unless you hit the 'Parade' button, in which case Miis will dash onto the screen in groups of three and perform a nifty move to win your affection. It's a pointless but classically Nintendo touch and its hard not to melt a little as Hitler prances into the spotlight and either karate chops, goes down on one knee or makes hearts fly out of his bottom in a bid to capture your heart.

Once you've seen a Mii that takes your fancy, a simple click with the pointer brings up their individual stats screen. Here, you can check out their initials, talent, popularity ranking and unique entry number, alongside creator and country of origin. You've also got the option to mark it as a favourite (shifting it over to your Favourites search screen), calling its friends or - if you rather, calling up similar Miis, if you want your screen overflowing with 50 questionable Peter Griffin look-a-likes - and, finally, you can import it to your Mii Channel.

    That's pretty much that ...

Ahead of the release of US videogame software sales data for October, Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter is predicting a 50 per cent increase from the same period last year.

He is forecasting sales of USD 555 million, compared to USD 369 million in October of 2006.

Most of the sales growth was driven by Activision's Guitar Hero III, which accounted for USD 100 million in sales. Pachter's estimate reflects USD 425 in sales from new platforms and USD 130 million in sales from current generation software sales.

Once again, in his estimate, the Wii will lead the market in hardware sales. He estimates sell-through of 450,000 Wii consoles, 325,000 Xbox 360 consoles, and 125,000 PlayStation 3 consoles.

Although share prices for the major videogame publishers have pulled back sharply of late, as investors again appear concerned that next generation console cycle strength will be insufficient to overcome a weakening economy, Pachter disagrees and thinks that solid software sales growth will continue well into 2008.

He expects October revenue to be up for Activision, EA, Majesco, and Take-Two, and down for Atari, Midway, THQ, and Ubisoft. ...

It seems Mass Effect's dirty lesbian love scene (which is more Channel 5 than Ben Dover) has earned it a ban in Singapore, according to blog GameAxis.

The blog claims official sources have confirmed BioWare's ban in the region, and we're inclined to believe them after Bioshock and virtually every GTA game ever was banned in Singapore previously.

The scene in question has your character and a blue alien lover engage in a brief bed tumble, and it's already earned Mass Effect a tame 12 rating in the UK. Moderate sex is completely acceptable for our kids, it seems.

The final game is out in little under two weeks, and you can expect our review - complete with sordid virtual sex details - shortly. ...

It's being reported from an EA press conference in Japan that the Bullfrog classic is being remade for DS. We've even got a picture of a man standing in front of a screen with the word 'Populous' on it and some Japanese writing, so it must be true!

We've got fond memories of hammering Peter Molyneux's Populous back in the day on Atari ST. Unfortunately not mush else has been revealed about the game - there aren't even any screens doing the rounds - but it's been rumoured to happen since SimCity got the DS treatment earlier this year.

According to the reports we should expect wireless play for up to four players.

We've been on to EA UK who was unaware of the news, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. Especially as the first screens have appeared over on a Japanese website.

Bad news people, EA UK says the game is for Japan only.

DS only got released in Korea in January this year, but the region known for its notorious levels of software piracy has already put it under Nintendo's legal spotlight as the Japanese company demands an investigation into DS piracy.

Illegal DS game downloads are rife on Korean websites which, according to reports, are being tolerated by web operators.

Nintendo Korea has issued a request to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office to look into the case after previous demands to remove the copied games were ignored.

"Nintendo will take further measures if copyright violations continue," said the company, according to Financial Times.

This marks the first time Nintendo has actively taken action against software piracy, having previously concentrated its efforts in the European and US markets. ...

Lazard Capital analyst Colin Sebastian has predicted that THQ will retain its focus on Nintendo platforms and Microsoft's Xbox 360 - and be slow to increase its commitment to PS3.

Sebastian made his prediction after hosting investor meetings with THQ managament. The meetings followed the company's recent announcement of disappointing results for the second quarter of its fiscal 2008.

"We expect THQ to remain more closely aligned with Nintendo and Microsoft platforms over the next couple of years," Sebastian said.

"This reflects THQ’s historical strength on handhelds (GBA and DS), increasing development slate for Nintendo’s Wii, early success with titles on the Xbox 360 (e.g. Saints Row) and a slower ramp on the PS3."

He also said that THQ was optimistic for the success of its next title licensed from a Pixar fim. Wall-E is expected to have "broader consumer appeal" than recent release Ratatouille.

THQ also has high hopes for sequels to its own properties, Saints Row and Red Faction. It expects that 40 per cent of its revenues will come from internal studios in fiscal 2008, up from 30 per cent in fiscal 2006. ...

SEGA has narrowed down a date for Phantasy Star Universe expansion Ambition of the Illuminus.

The Live downloadable version will be out on 20th November and cost 1600 Points (GBP 13.60 / EUR 18.61), followed by retail PS2 and PC versions on 11th January for GBP 19.99 / EUR 29.99.

Ambition of the Illuminus has a new storyline to work through, new areas to explore and bigger monsters to kill and boast about.

There is also a new lobby area that is much bigger and has casino machines to gamble and win things on, as well as more customisation options like more weapons to hurt things with, more things to wear to stop you getting hurt, something called Photon Arts to do something with, and more clothes to dress up in.

Whether this will make up for the shortcomings we identified in our Phantasy Star Universe review is another thing, but we imagine that if you're still playing PSU then you're comfortable enough to look beyond them. ...

A source at UK developer Rare has told GamesIndustry.biz that its Banjo-Kazooie title for Xbox 360 has not been cancelled, despite rumours to the contrary.

There is speculation that development of a major, first-party Microsoft title has been stopped. But, if true, this is "definitely not" Banjo-Kazooie, says the source at the Microsoft-owned developer.

Rumours have intensified since Shane Bettenhausen, of US magazine EGM, mentioned them on last week's 1up Yours podcast.

"A big Microsoft first-party title that has been in the works for a very long time, that people are very excited for, sounds like it's being cancelled," said Bettenhausen. He added that the story had a "97 per cent chance" of being true, and may break this week.

Much of the subsequent speculation has focused on Banjo-Kazooie. The finger has been pointed at the latest in the popular series of platform games due to the poor sales of Rare's other family-oriented 360 games, Kameo and Viva Pinata. ...

There have been a lot of highs and lows during Xbox Live Arcade's lifespan (like Geometry Wars versus say... Street Fighter turning out to be rubbish) but next week the download service will finally make it to the two year milestone.

In a double-whammy of milestones XBLA is also set to receive its 100th game during the same week period, so you'd expect Microsoft is planning to celebrate with a pretty decent release next week, eh? Well, that's exactly what our mate internet rumours is saying...

Xblarcade.com is the first site to quote "sources inside Microsoft," claiming that the company is well aware of the upcoming milestones and is planning something "huge" to celebrate.

"If everything goes well," says the site, "next week we will be playing the 'true' sequel to the biggest XBLA title to date." So they're blatantly hinting at a new Geometry Wars sequel then.

We've been on to our own sources and we too have heard rummagings of a new XBLA-only Geometry Wars, but then again after the success of the last one it's an absolute no-brainer that Bizarre Creations is developing a follow-up. Whether or not its coming out next week though, is anyone's guess.

Microsoft expectedly refused to comment on this particular rumour, but did note that Xtival, the free Xbox Live weekend, is planned for next week. We'll let you know if we hear anything else. ...
