Microsoft will be treating us all to two new Live Arcade titles tomorrow.

The first is Word Puzzle, which you may remember as Word Search, the game you played at school when you had a substitute teacher step in. The general idea is to scour a grid of letters for words based around a theme, all of which can be arranged horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Word Puzzle will offer 3D boards to spice things up, some word bombs for a spot of literature terrorism, and some special effects to dazzle you when you get things right.

There are five game modes in total and you can switch your Live Vision camera on and use it while playing online against up-to four of your spelling chums. Word Puzzle will set you back 800 points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.30).

Next on the list is Switchball, which squashes you into a ball and challenges you to get around various tricksy mazes. To help, you will be able to alter the physical properties of your sphere to overcome obstacles; you can morph into a Metalball to smash things to pieces, charge up as Powerball to make jumps or climb steep inclines, float over obstacles as Airball or pick up speed by zipping around as Marbleball.

It looks very pretty and has five levels to roll around in total, either on your own or in two-player co-operative mode. Tire of that and you can always head online and get competitive with up to seven of your friends. Switchball will also cost you 800 points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.30).

Look out for our thoughts on both very soon. ...

Reflexive Entertainment is working on some sort of mining game for Xbox Live Arcade called Axiom Overdrive. Which is surely a 2 Unlimited song.

We say "some sort of" mining game because Reflexive's launch announcement, accompanied by one screenshot, is billed as an announcement "that the mining colony 'AF128' in orbit about Neutron Star PSR B1913+16 is now in full production".

As a result, "The Axiom Corp. mining company is now preparing for a massive hiring program of O.T.F. pilots." Go on. "Inside the mine, pilots discover side-scrolling, omni-directional, 3D, physics-based job challenges that will push their piloting skills while dazzling their eyes." Aha! You are a description of the game and I claim my five pounds!

Quite when Axiom Overdrive will be released is another thing, but there's an official website to keep an eye on if you're interested. Reflexive's previous games include Wik: Fable of Souls and Ricochet.

Whatever the answer, we probably won't see it this month as Word Puzzle and Switchball are up tomorrow and Microsoft's recent list of future Xbox Live Arcade releases made no mention of Axiom Overdrive. ...

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, a new first-person shooter from Infinity Ward and Activision, is now waiting for you in retail stores, smeared with camouflage face paint and constantly checking its six.

In a departure from its past storylines, CoD4 moves away from WWII and into modern times with a tense storyline about hijacked Russian nukes and terrorists hell-bent on destruction.

"We've set out to create the most intense, visceral experience in Call of Duty 4," said Infinity Ward Studio Head Grant Collier. "From the beginning, our team has been focused on pulling players into an unfolding, well-paced and relentless action experience that includes: fast-roping from attack helicopters in the dead of night; utilizing a camouflage Ghillie suit as you inch behind enemy lines; or being immersed in fun, competitive action in multiplayer that enables gamers to create classes, unlock new abilities and taunt opponents as they level up."

In addition to its campaign mode, CoD4 features a multiplayer mode with a leveling system, a variety of unlockable perks, hot-join and matchmaking, as well as create-a-class and party capabilities. The system allows up to 18-players on Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 and 32-players on Windows PC. ...

Microsoft has confirmed earlier reports of a free Xbox Live weekend later this month, 'Xtival 07' which is officially planned from November 23 to 26.

Over the Xtival weekend all Xbox 360 owners with a broadband connection will be able to access Gold account luxuries such as online play.

Additionally, a "full line-up" of Xbox Live events, competitions and exclusive downloads are promised for the weekend.

What's more, it's only open to European countries. No wining, swearing 13-year-old Americans then, hopefully.

"It's great to be able to offer Xbox 360 owners across the region the chance to take part in Xtival '07 for free, sampling all the great features of the Xbox Live Gold service and play against friends new and old alike from the comfort of their living room," said Chris Lewis, Microsoft's VP of E&DD.

Great news for cheapskates then. Perhaps MS might even learn a lesson or two and go PlayStation Network free. Well, we can dream... ...

Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 has held on to the number one chart position in the UK, selling twice as many units as FIFA 08, despite a 52 per cent drop in sales.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that it will be introducing a new model PlayStation 2 to the market in the new year.

Already scheduled for release in Japan later this month, the new model comes with an integrated power supply and is lighter due to revised internal architecture.

The redesigned unit will come in three colours – Charcoal Black, Ceramic White and Satin Silver, with matching vertical stands sold separately.

Despite rumours, the new unit will not be any cheaper in Japan than the current model, retailing for JPY 16,000, and it looks likely the same business model will apply in the European market.

Last month Sony celebrated the seventh birthday of the 120 million-selling console, revealing that more than a billion units of software had been sold for the machine since it launched in 2000.

The PlayStation 2 currently has a recommended retail price of GBP 94.99 / EUR 129.99 in Europe. ...

Sony has officially deployed the 1.1 patch for PeacePigeon aka WarHawk, and this time it actually meant to release it and everything. Game director Dylan Jobe describes it as "a fast download", which will zap its way down your Interpipes when you next fire up WarHawk.

But what does it do, I hear you ask? It addresses "critical issues with stats and connectivity". Specifically, "stat connection, fetch/post fixes; significantly improved client connection stability; quad '????' ping display bug fixed; added support for Player-Ranked Servers; game synchronisation fixes due to fluctuating network conditions (packet-drop); crash fixes for end of game and split screen".

But wait, that sounds boring! Fortunately, Jobe and his Incog pals are also working on a 1.2 patch that introduces new layouts for existing maps, clan and Buddy list options for servers and other interesting tweaks.

For more on WarHawk, check out our WarHawk gamepage. It's available now as a PSN download or in the shops on a disc with a manual and a headset. ...

Empire has revealed that International Cricket Captain III will be heading to PS2 and PSP on 16th November.

It is the first time the sports management series has appeared on lounge-dwelling machines, and each will come with some unique bits and pieces.

The PS2 version will have new 3D highlights that will apparently be very similar to watching the game on the telly, while the PSP offering will focus on shorter matches like Twenty20 with Wi-Fi multiplayer.

International Cricket Captain III came out on PC in July and brought with it lots of fancy new bits like a better game engine, more motion-captured action, Ball Tracker to imitate telly-style replays, and commentary from sort of famous person Jonathan Agnew.

It will also have all the right player and team data so you can pretend your are England touring Sri Lanka or Ian Botham on the Shredded Wheat advert walking around and talking about his heart.

Pop over to the official International Cricket Captain website to get excited. ...
