Fresh from the Tokyo Game Show comes a new batch of screens for Namco's, which will feature a four-player VS mode.

The demo's been doing to rounds on US Marketplace for a while now but your only way of playing it over here is via the demo disc on Official Xbox Magazine.

Fingers crossed Namco sorts it out soon, or gives it to Atari to publish like it does most of the firm's games. Stay tuned for a release date.

Speaking in an interview with Net-Gen, Sony's world wide studios boss Phil Harrison has spoken about the success of Wii and how it's taken many by surprise, including himself.

When asked if he was surprised by its success, Harrison replied, "Yeah, I don't remember reading anybody's analysis that called this route two years ago or even a year ago to 18 months ago, but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing. We work in an entertainment business, basically, and entertainment has elements of fashion, and it has elements of the latest cool thing.

"If that stimulates interest in the videogame business and causes more people to play games, causes more people to go into retail stores and buy games, causes retailers to dedicate more shelf space to the category, and causes game developers and publishers to have a better macroeconomic foundation for their business, that's a win-win for everybody, best of all for the end consumer. It's a virtuous cycle."

When asked if he could equally recognise the success that Microsoft has had, Harrison said, "It would be churlish to try and suggest that you would wish ill on any company, because as I said, if the business has got a lot of momentum and it's aggressively acquiring new users, new forms of creativity are being accepted in the marketplace and the kind of games that we can make as creators gets wider, that's a great thing from a game designer point of view, from a game creating organization.

"That's incredibly empowering because it means that people's minds are more open to new challenges. In the 16-bit and the 8-bit era on 8-bit Nintendo and 16-bit Genesis and Nintendo, it was all about 2D platformers, some sports and that was it. And that's a pretty boring place to be."

The previously hinted Wii version of Samba de Amigo looks like a dead certainty after the official US Nintendo magazine legitimises rumours with new details.

Sega have remained tight-lipped on rumours of the much-loved Sega rhythm action game coming to Wii, after a frenzy sparked from a listing on a retailer website.

But according to Nintendo Power, the game's on its way "some time next year".

Apparently in development at Gearbox Software (Brothers in Arms developers), the game will feature both new songs and favourites from the Dreamcast original, and will use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in replacement of the original maracas.

Once again, Sega remains quiet on the seemingly immanent sequel, but we'll be having further words soon. ...

Paint by DS producer Jason Harman reckons a similar title could be a possibility for the Wii, although the lack of physical contact might prove to be a burden.

But not to worry, he said smilingly, "The Wii version could include other painting media such as a spray paint can and a roller."

Paint by DS is "a digital colouring book" that challenges you to recreate masterpieces by renowned painters like Cezanne and that one who chopped his ear off. You use the stylus to mix up oil and water-based paints to the right shade and consistency, then slop them around the screen in a paint-by-numbers fashion.

It sounds simple, but Harman is confident Paint by DS can teach us valuable lessons that will help us better understand the world of clever pictures we know as art.

"Not only will your basic understanding of painting be improved, but some of the finer nuances of artistry will have to be used to create your masterpiece," Harman told Eurogamer.

"From mixing paints to creating different colours, or using a pencil or paintbrush on its side for creative art and blending multiple colours - they all add to making Paint by DS an educational as well as relaxing and entertaining game."

There are around 15 colouring-in challenges to complete in total - some tricky enough to tax even the most skilful virtual painter - plus a flurry of mini-games based on famous pictures to distract you. Each masterpiece will take around an hour to do, apparently.

Paint by DS is part of the Zen series of titles from Mercury Games, so called because they are designed to relax as well as stimulate the old thinker. Perfect for a train journey home from work, for instance.

Those announced so far are Aquarium by DS, Fantasy Aquarium by DS, and Match Stick Puzzle by DS. There's more to come soon, too.

Atari will be distributing Paint by DS in the UK on 26th October.

CVG has learnt from several sources that PS3 is about to step up to the console war in a big way.

Speaking off the record (which means we can't name names), we've been told by sources in both the publishing and retail sectors that PS3 is on the verge of receiving a massive price cut - to £299.

But this won't be for the 60GB system that's currently on the shelves. It'll be a stripped down version, which Sky News reports will ship without backwards compatibility or USB ports. How you'll sync your controllers without them, we don't know.

Sony has been tipped to make an announcement regarding the stripped-down PS3 this week - right on time to combat Microsoft's massive Halo 3 launch.

We'll let you know if SCEE has anything to say. ...

SNK has said the new and completely redesigned King of Fighters XII will be available in early 2009 across the US.

Confirmation came by way of Kotaku, who heard the news from SNK marketing manager Yoshihito Koyama at the Tokyo Game Show 2007.

This PS3 and 360 instalment will be a significant step for SNK, as it will discard the character sprites that have been used in the fighting series for almost a decade.

Instead, everything is being redesigned, creating a style described by Koyama as “3D mixed with 2D". It also goes some way to explaining the lengthy development time.

King of Fighters XII is currently unconfirmed for Europe.

King of Fighters XI was released here in the summer at a budget price, and earned itself a pat on the back from us for a splendid return to form. ...

THQ has officially de-cloaked gangster sequel Saints Row 2.

It's due on PS3 and 360 in 2008, and brings with it significant improvements on the 2006 free-roaming original.

Chief among these are co-operative online gang-banging for you and a chum, plus lots more customisation options like gender, age, voice, crib and gang bits and bobs.

The world has also swollen to include lots more locations, and you will be able to enjoy riding around in things like boats, helicopters, planes and the all important m070rb1k3s. We love them, the way they have two wheels and go very fast. Ooh, pretty motorbikes.

Saints Row 2 will also look better thanks to a beefed up engine from developer Volition, with the environments looking not too dissimilar to Crackdown's. You should find there's much more depth of choice across the board, too, intertwined into a much darker and more sinister storyline - albeit underpinned with a sense of humour.

"The team at Volition is leveraging invaluable experience gained on Saints Row to build Saints Row 2 into a game that sets the standard for combat, player freedom, customization, vehicle game-play, team-based co-op and the most compelling online open world experience to date," boasted Scott Guthrie, marketing boss at THQ.

Saints Row was released in 2006 and was surprisingly good - especially given it was Volition's first open-world effort, as you can see for yourself in our review.

However, it launched in a period without any real competition, and filled a GTA-style gap for many of us. Next year, of course, it will go head-to-head with the mega franchise itself. ...

Ubisoft has announced its holiday 2007 line-up, with Hell's Highway missing its previously announced release window.

Assassin's Creed will be released for the Xbox 360 and PS3 in November, followed by a PC version in 2008. Beowulf, a tie-in with the upcoming film, will also be released in November for the Xbox 360, PS3, and PSP.

Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway has now slipped into Q4, although the Wii port of Road to Hill 30 is still set for December.

Blazing Angels 2 for the 360 and PS3, CSI for the 360 and Wii, Heroes of Might and Magic V for PC, and Haze for the PS3 were also announced as holiday releases.

Other holiday titles include Nitrobike for the Wii, Naruto: Rise of a Ninja for the 360, and Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 for the Wii and the DS.

Ubisoft also announced that it has signed an agreement to publish No More Heroes, a Wii exclusive developed by Grasshopper Manufacture (Killer 7), in North America. The game is currently scheduled for a February 2008 release. ...

EA has let fly new details for Dead Space, the survival horror game due next autumn on 360 and PS3.

It turns out the team handling its creation is EA Redwood Shores, previously responsible for The Sims, The Godfather and Lord of the Rings.

It all takes place in deep space. You fill the boots of Isaac Clarke, an engineer on a routine maintenance trip to a mining vessel. But the dodgy communications system you're on your way to fix soon turns out to be the least of your worries.

It's the mangled remains of the crew that provide the first inkling things might not be right, and it's soon revealed a vicious alien infestation is to blame. Scariness ensues.

It looks like the silence of space will play a key role in giving you the creeps here, with EA focusing on psychological thrills and atmosphere rather than trigger-happy action.

"This team has worked on some tremendous properties, but we always wanted to work on something that was darker and creepier," said Glen Schofield, executive producer of the game. "We're all such huge fans of the horror and sci-fi genres; we wanted to create the most terrifying game we could, and keep the player on the edge of his seat the entire time."

Media Molecule's LittleBigPlanet could be a driving force in improving PlayStation 3 sales early next year, according to Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter.

Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz from the Tokyo Game Show, Pachter said the highly-anticipated game from the makers of Rag Doll Kung Fu should appeal to a family audience - something that Sony and rival Microsoft have so far failed to capture with their next-generation machines.

"After seeing LittleBigPlanet at TGS, I believe it could be a console mover," commented Pachter.

"The game is really innovative, and I think it adds a family element that is so far missing from both the Xbox 360 and the PS3. If they can accompany that game's launch with a price cut (or a lower priced SKU), I think we'll see a spike in sales," he added.

Although Sony stated there are no immediate plans for a price cut of the PlayStation 3 at last week's event, Pachter believes the company needs to drop the RRP of the console if it's to meet its 11 million shipment targets by March 2008.

"If Sony doesn't cut price at all during its fiscal year, they will probably miss their 11 million shipment target," he said. "However, a price cut early in 2008 should spark sales, and their line-up of LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5, Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto 4 should help move consoles."

"If they don't cut price, they'll probably sell through around 7 million for the fiscal year, and will probably ship no more than 8 - 9 million," he added.

Sony unveiled LittleBigPlanet earlier this year at the Game Developers Conference and it has quickly become one of the PS3's most anticipated titles, along with the 3D social networking service Home and the latest iteration of SingStar. ...
