Sony has confirmed you'll have to cough up some cash for the first batch of Killzone 2 downloadable content.

Square Enix has confirmed to Eurogamer that Final Fantasy XIII has been given a winter 2009 date in Japan.

That date was pictured at the end of the PS3 FFXIII demo, which is included in the Blu-ray release of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children - due out tomorrow in Japan and in June in North America.

However, European dates for both Advent Children and Final Fantasy XIII are still to be confirmed, the publisher told us this morning.

The demo, according to a Famitsu preview (read by Gamezine, lasts for over an hour and lets players control characters Snow and Lightning. Perhaps they listen to Earth, Wind and Fire.

Square Enix also had nothing to say about a trademark filing for Front Mission Evolved, spotted by a keen-eyed Kotaku.

Front Mission is a strategy series in which robots beat each other up. Evolved could be a series reboot, a revamped instalment for XBLA or PSN, or simply one of the many Japanese releases heading West. [Or just a random trademark. - Ed] ...

Sony and Nintendo are "freaking out" over the success of the iPhone as a gaming platform, according to Trip Hawkins, founder of Electronic Arts.

Speaking to VentureBeat about the success his current company, Digital Chocolate, has had with iPhone games, Hawkins explained how the popularity of the platform took the industry by surprise.

"The iPhone for us was a spectacularly pleasant surprise," he explained. "We had no idea it was going to be as good for us as it turned out to be...

"It's by far our most effective platform. We make as much money with these games on one device as we do putting a game on 100 different cell phone platforms."

He added: "Between the iPod Touch and the iPhone, I think the platform is freaking out Sony and Nintendo. Apple has sold 30 million units so far and it has created tremendous awareness. It has taken ground all over the world. But it has only penetrated one half of one percent of its total market."

Hawkins recognised that other mobile phone manufacturers hoped to build on iPhone's success with similar designs but insisted that Digital Chocolate's focus remained on Apple's device.

"The clones are coming," he said. "Device makers, chip companies, software companies and others are getting into the act. We may experiment with putting games on those new app stores, but the urgency now is to put games on the iPhone."

Digital Chocolate has produced four titles for the iPhone that were best sellers, with 10 million downloads in less than 100 days. ...

Q Games will release PixelJunk Eden expansion Encore on PSN this week. It'll cost USD 5.99.

That's what developer boss Dylan Cuthbert says on the US PlayStation blog, where he also reveals that work on a fourth game is well under way.

"We’re busy working the fourth instalment for PixelJunk and I’ll post more info about that in a little while. All I can say is that the game is really unique and a lot of fun - and very pretty to look at," offers Cuthbert, the cagey fox.

PixelJunk Eden Encore adds five new stages to the game, each accompanied by new music and complimented by new backgrounds. Apparently quite a lot of effort has gone in.

Q Games will also retrofit a new three-seed smartbomb to the original PixelJunk Eden game. This makes all Prowlers explode into pollen when three full seeds are jumped into in a row. ...

Atlus wants players to be more familiar with their DS puzzle platformer Steal Princess before it sees release, and nothing says familiarity like enough screenshots to play the game flipbook style.

The sun is shining; the grass so green. A perfect day to thumb through 38 new screenshots from Steal Princess. The screens come courtesy of UK publisher Rising Star Games, who are apparently trying to drum up familiarity just as much as U.S. publisher Atlus is. If you don't know Steal Princess by now, you will never ever really know it at all.

Konami has revealed plans to publish a brand new DS-exclusive action adventure game from Hudson Soft, entitled Miami Crisis.

    Here's the official word:

"A mix of crime-scene detection and action elements, MIAMI CRISIS offers the player to guide one of two characters - Martin Law from the Miami PD or FBI Agent Sara Starling - as they are charged with solving a series of linked crimes in the US city.

"Law is an intense officer who will use any means necessary to make a bust, while Sterling is an intelligent agent with an eye for detail, and both will face different challenges as the game unfolds.

"Playing as Martin Law, players will experience a more action-orientated game, wherein the Miami PD officer becomes embroiled in the hard-edged side of law enforcement, with MIAMI CRISIS throwing up car chases, intense shoot-outs and face-offs.

Alternatively, playing as Starling presents a more puzzle-solving side to the game, with the FBI agent using forensics and detailed examination techniques to search for clues. Both are working to uncover a shadowy terrorist conspiracy, but their successes and failures along the way will have an ongoing effect on the plot."

Look out for the first shots soon. Game's out in September. ...

Capcom has denied that the Versus downloadable content for Resident Evil 5 is no more than a key that unlocks the mode already on the game disc, despite being only 1.86 MB in size.

"Keys are 100 [kilobytes] or less," Christian Svensson, Capcom's vice president of corporate development, said on the company's message boards (spotted by Variety).

"It is not a key. We have said in the past, it uses assets from the disc (like levels, models, audio, etc.) but the code is new and does not exist on the disc. "

The small size of the download had led many players to suspect they were being charged 400 Microsoft Points, GBP 3.99 or USD 4.99 to unlock content they'd effectively already bought on the game disc. This stance was backed up by IGN last week, which claimed that "you are not, in fact, downloading the content from Xbox Live Marketplace or PlayStation Network. Instead, you are downloading a key that unlocks content already on the RE5 retail disc. The same disc you paid USD 60 for a month ago."

As our review points out, Versus re-uses the visuals, audio, maps and basic mechanics of the existing Mercenaries mode. Capcom's contention is that the code that sets the game rules for Versus and makes it work is all contained in those 1.86 MB.

This is certainly feasible - any programmer will tell you that you can fit an awful lot of lines of code in 1.86 MB, and that it's graphics and audio that take up all the space. But it seems that the problem is one of perception, of players feeling that they're getting something for their money when paying for DLC. ...

Sony has announced the first downloadable content for Killzone 2 is coming later this month.

The Steel & Titanium Pack will include two brand new maps for online multiplayer fun.

First up is the Wasteland Bullet map, where the action takes place on the bullet train linking Pyrrhus and the Wasteland. You have to wrestle control of the train from the enemy as it hurtles along the track at full speed. Overhead obstacles are likely to prove a particular problem as they can cause instant death.

Then there's the Vekta Cruiser map. ISA troops aboard a huge ship have to repel a force of Helghast troops, and protect the cruiser from Helghan fire. The action all takes place indoors and is said to be "hauntingly claustrophobic", with danger lurking around every corner.

It's not known how much, or indeed whether, you'll have to pay for the maps. But Sony has confirmed the Steel & Titanium Pack will be released via PlayStation Network on 30th April. ...

Effective immediately, Microsoft has extended its warranty coverage for Xbox 360 users who have encountered the 'E74' hardware error code, to three years from the console's purchase date.

Additionally, Microsoft will be issuing refunds to any users who have previously paid for repairs caused by the error.

This new service plan effectively adds the 'E74' error to the extended warranty first offered in July of 2007 for users who have experienced "general hardware failure" errors indicated by the infamous three flashing red lights on the front of the console.

An unnamed Microsoft representative revealed to GamesIndustry.biz that the two symptoms appear to be related.

"After investigating the issue, we have determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console," the representative said.

Though independent research conducted by Jacob Metcalf of 8bitjoystick.com suggests that the error is caused when the "ANA" image scaler chip overheats and fails, the representative we spoke to was unwilling to verify this, stating that the "general hardware failure has no single root cause. As a matter of policy, we do not comment on internal component updates or changes."

First reported by online users shortly after the Xbox 360 console launch in late 2005, the E74 error has seen an increased amount of media coverage over the past month, with gaming enthusiast blog Joystiq reporting a dramatically increased number of email complaints from its readers starting in March.

While Microsoft maintains that a "very small percentage" of its customers have complained of the error, the Redmond, Washington-based company told us that "there has been a small increase in inquiries related to E74 in recent weeks coinciding with the growth in media coverage related to the E74 error message."

According to Microsoft Help and Support, refunds will be issued to those who have paid for repairs related to the E74 error "within 4-12 weeks." ...
