Games mags X360 and 360 Magazine have been merged by publisher Imagine.
The change takes place immediately, with the X360 brand chosen as the identity with which the pair will move forwards.
“Having been involved with both magazines throughout the last five years, it would be fair to say that X360 and 360 Magazine have always occupied their own individual niche; there have always been elements each has realised with greater effectiveness than the other,” Dan Howdle, who assumes the role of editor in the new team, stated.
“The new X360 combines the power of these unique strengths into one highly desirable whole. I could not be more thrilled at being a part of the team that’s going to make X360’s future a reality.”
Editor in chief Rick porter added: “By merging these two magazines, we have a chance to better focus ourselves on creating exactly what is needed is push the X360 brand forward.
“Ultimately, we’re now in a position to create the best possible package for the Xbox 360 gamer, and ensure the X360 brand goes from strength to strength in the challenging single-format magazine market.”
Issue 87 and X360 – the first since the merger – will go on sale on July 11th.

Those of you who watched Microsoft's E3 2012 press conferencemay recall Phil Spencer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Studios, introducing teaser trailers for three new games. At the time, none really caught the eye: such is the way of CG teasers. There was Lococycle, from 'Splosion Man developer Twisted Pixel, and Matter, a Kinect game from Hollywood director Gore Verbinski. The third, Ascend: New Gods, from Toy Soldiers developer Signal Studios, promised persistent asynchronous multiplayer across Xbox 360 and Windows Phone.
But there's more to it than that: it's Xbox 360's first truly free-to-playgame.
A thirdperson, fantasy action-RPG due in 2013, Ascend casts players as one of the Caos, a breed of warriors created solely to serve the will of the Gods. You'll pledge allegiance to one of the three deities, battling your way across an evolving land in their honour. You won't be playing as the same character throughout: Signal says the "largest rewards" are reserved for those prepared to sacrifice their warrior. It appears you then respawn, with new abilities.
At this stage, there are few details on how the multiplayer will work - though the reference to a singleplayer game where you can leave your mark on another player's gameworld naturally calls to mind FromSoftware's masterful Dark Souls - but it will be playable on console and mobile, your progress carried over between platforms.
More importantly, there's no indication of how it will be monetised. It's over a year now since Microsoft was reported to be consideringchanging its stance on free-to-play games on Xbox Live, the sticking point apparently being how the sale of virtual items was handled. Microsoft would doubtless want its standard cut of every Marketplace transaction, virtual goods and all, and it may be that Signal is, quite simply, the first studio prepared to acquiesce to that demand.
Either way it's a sign of a surprising, yet welcome, shift in thinking at Microsoft's Redmond HQ. The rapid rise of free-to-play in the past 18 months has been impossible to ignore, and Microsoft has surely taken note of Sony's F2P dabbling.
Kid-friendly MMOG Free Realms hit PSN last year, but it was DC Universe Online that was most successful: Sony Online Entertainment's superhero MMOG saw huge increases in player count and revenue after it turned its back on the monthly subscription model.

Microsoft Game Studios’ Phil Spencer lifts lid on company's perspective on streaming

Microsoft Game Studios’ corporate VP Phil Spencer has admitted that the future of gaming lies in the clouds.
While an expected deal between Sony and a major cloud gaming firm has yet to be announced, platform holders are for the first time admitting that the model as we know it is on borrowed time.

“Cloud is a huge opportunity. And someday, yes, someday,” Spencer told News.com.auwhen asked if gaming ‘is all going to be through the cloud’ at some stage.
“But if you look at the internet capabilities today, it's a challenge. Even, forget about games. If you said everybody was going to watch the Champions League Final concurrently via the internet at HD-level quality, the internet can't handle that. And that's just people watching a football game. That doesn't include the level of interactivity of a game and a two-way pipe going back and forth.
“So I believe, yes, in the long run we'll land in a spot where there's cloud distribution of all content and Microsoft is clearly invested in that. I like the work that Gaikai does, I play games on Gaikai, and if I get the right bandwidth situation they're actually good experiences.

24 hours on and both media and fans have had plenty of time to chew over Microsoft's 2012 E3 press conference, and it's fair to say that not all of the commentary has been entirely positive. With that in mind, Eurogamer sat down with Chris Lewis, vice president of interactive entertainment for Xbox Europe, to find out how Microsoft itself views its performance and the ensuing public reaction."I think [the response has been] largely very positive," he said."I get the opportunity to talk to a lot of journalists from around the region, and analysts as well, and generally people are really positive about what we had to say."People love this mission that we're on to make the whole entertainment experience ever more amazing. They love the line up. I think people are blown away by the quality of the content, the breadth and depth of the games. Not only our own - we're unashamedly pushing pretty hard around Halo 4, Forza, Fable, Gears of course - but we've always done very well with our partnerships with third party publishers."So yes, generally I've had very good feedback," he continued."There's no doubt that Smart Glass has captured folks' imaginations, and in a good way. People love the browser, I think they're impressed with what we've got in terms of content partnerships and entertainment relationships. There's more to come of course, but we're happy."Lewis isn't oblivious to the criticism from some sections of the community, but argued that Microsoft is doing it's very best to keep the core happy while at the same time offering a range of broader content."We have an embarrassment of riches right now," he explained."In the lead up to the show we have to think really hard about what we can show at a practical level versus this desire to put everything in there because we're so proud of everything we have."The hardcore community defined us - there's no doubt. That community defines where we are now and we continue to bring great content to them - Halo 4, Gears. And the success we enjoy on our platform with Call of Duty is very clearly focused on continuing to bring content to that audience."But there's a lot more that we have to talk about too. Our consumers want Xbox 360 to offer broad digital entertainment, whether that's music, TV, sports or indeed games - both casual through Kinect or otherwise."I think it's about bringing that portfolio to an event like this and trying to cater to the different audiences that we want to appeal to. We want to be where our community wants us to be, and they want us to be in those places."One aspect of the show that surprised many viewers was how quickly it glossed over unknown quantity Gears of War: Judgement in a matter of seconds, while spending five minutes showcasing casual XBLA effort Wreckateers. Wasn't that an odd decision?"I didn't think it about that way," answered Lewis."We have such a strong base of fans for that whole epic Gears experience that we know it speaks volumes for itself."Finally, we quizzed Lewis on why we didn't get a glimpse of its next home console during this year's show. He answered that, with its current system still performing so well, it's focus remains on the 360."The lifestyle is longer than has been the case in the past but that allows developers to bring content they might not otherwise have been able to bring, as it pushes the boundaries out."We've still got so much more to do with this generation. We think we're in an enviable position. We're fixated on 360 and we love the fact that it's in such a momentous state still."

Microsoft's canny subscription-based Xbox scheme launched last month, but was , at that point, limited to its own stores. Looks like it's been deemed a success though, as Microsoft has decided to expand the deal to all Best Buy and selected GameStop stores later this month. The $99 deal ties you into a two-year subscription at $14.99 per month and includes a 4GB Xbox 360, Kinect unit and Xbox Live Gold. According to Microsoft, this is only the next stage of the "pilot period", with limited numbers and dates. No specifics just yet on those exact numbers and which stores will be offering the deal. But even ifSmartGlass didn't grab you the first time round, this makes it even harder to say no. Your turn, Nintendo.

Square Enix's action adventure Tomb Raider. Like Resident Evil 6, all DLC will be temporarily exclusive to Xbox 360.
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Blacklist, the latest entry in Ubisoft's stealth action series. This time Sam Fisher must hunt down terrorists that are trying to force the US to withdraw its troops from global hotzones.

Sure, we expected as much since Microsoft has Call of Duty DLC locked until the end of this year, but Microsoft still saw the need to announce a continued partnership with Activision for Call of Duty DLC anyway, those rebels. During the Microsoft E3 press conference, Don Mattrick revealed that Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 would continue the trend of offering DLC first on Xbox 360.

Microsoft may not be introducing a next-gen console at E3 this year, but it is teaching its venerable Xbox 360 some new tricks. SmartGlass brings AirPlay-style wireless technology to Xbox and Windows 8 by letting you send video from your tablet or phone to your TV. It then turns that second screen into an information window giving you data of the content you're watching. Plus, it updates the info on your mobile device as the content on the TV changes. The app also enables peripheral controls for games you're playing -- so you can scroll through different plays on your tablet while playing Maddenonscreen, for example.
In addition to providing your peripherals with contextual awareness, the SmartGlass app turns your phone into a remote and trackpad for your Xbox, in case using Kinect and regular controllers aren't something you're into. So, you can pinch to zoom, move the onscreen cursor and scroll to your heart's content in Xbox's new web browser using your tablet or phone. When will we be seeing SmartGlass in living rooms? Unfortunately, not until this fall, so our liveblog photos of the app in action will have to suffice until then.

Microsoft just confessed that while other outfits have brought web browsers to televisions, "no one is using them," because "keyboards don't belong in the living room." Aside from thoroughly slammingGoogle TV, MS just offered its own alternative: Internet Explorer on Xbox 360... with full-on Kinect / voice command integration. It'll hit later this year, right alongside Smart Glass.
