Update: The document in question has since been removed from its original source at the request of Covington & Burling, a law firm that advises Microsoft. No word on if it was removed for being a forgery or not, so we've inquired with the firm as to why.
Microsoft responded to IGN stating "We do not comment on rumors or speculation."
Original Story: An unconfirmed document allegedly leaking out of Microsoft reveals the company's five-year plan, price, and features for the Xbox 720. The 56 page documentlooks at the possibilities for Xbox 360 in 2011 leading up to the launch of the next generation in 2013, which includes a new Kinect sensor at launch in a $299 bundle. Notable changes include a blu-ray disc drive, as well as a focus on and tablet integration. IGN is already confident that the next-generation will begin in 2013, and the plan for tablets to talk to consoles recently rang true.

The vast German consumer and trade video game show Gamescom has not been shaken by Microsoft's decision to miss the 2012 event.
In a statement issued to MCV, organiser Koelnmesse says the event is still 'on track, demonstrating stability and growth despite the difficult market situation'.
Instead, the organisers say an increasingly diverse set of exhibitors, with less of the 'traditional' games industry on hand, is down to "a transitional year" in the industry.
Microsoft earlier today confirmed it would not be exhibiting at Gamescom, which is put together in association with German trade body BIU. Fellow BIU members Sega, THQ and Nintendo have also opted out of the show this year, but Microsoft is also missing Tokyo Game Show 2012.
But any cancellations from bigger companies have been offset by new attendance promised from 60 new exhibitors.
And that includes the backing of Samsung, which will exhibit at Gamescom this year. Samsung, in case you need reminding, is the biggest electronics manufacturer in the world.
Koelnmesse's statement said: "The games industry is evidently in a transitional year prior to the forthcoming next generation of consoles. Several companies have therefore opted to implement individual marketing measures this year. This is compounded by the publication of revenue figure of other companies as well as other firms with new products that are only scheduled to come into the shops after the 2012 Christmas trade.
"This correspondingly affects the participation in the trade show of individual companies in Cologne as well as in other places where games shows are held, such as Los Angeles or Tokyo."
Gamescom's organisers have, since the show's inception, strived to make its offering - which includes a business lounge for the trade and hugely popular halls for consumers - varied and representative of the total games market. That means PC and console games, online games and browser games, plus new spaces for social and mobile gaming added this year.
"This is having a favourable effect on the event," says Koelnmesse, and it has stats to prove it:
    - The number of exhibitors so far is up 20 per cent year on year.
    - 370 companies from more than 30 nations have confirmed their participation.
    - There are 13 country-specific shared stands – including Hungary and Austria for the first time this year.
    - The event floor space is up 15 per cent to 140,000 square metres
Gamescom has a dedicated press event on June 28th that will be livestreamed online, and which the organisers say will name even more new exhibitors.
And anyway, Koelnmesse added: "Even if Microsoft does not have a stand of its own this year, the gaming community can nevertheless look forward to Xbox 360 games and games developed by countless Microsoft partners at Gamescom."
Gamescom takes place from August 15th to 19th. The first day is for trade visitors and the show is open to consumers from August 16th.

Computing giant joins Sega and Nintendo in missing this year's event

Microsoft is to skip Gamescom this year and focus on smaller, more localised shows, it has announced.
It said however that whilst it would not be attending to show off its first-party titles, selected Xbox 360 games would still be presented at the event.

“In the lead up to the launch of Halo 4, Gears of War: Judgement, Forza Horizon, Fable: The Journey and Dance Central 3, among other titles and entertainment experiences, Xbox is focusing on smaller, more-localised experiences for customers, partners, retailers and press around the world.
"As a result, Xbox will not be exhibiting directly at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany in August this year. Selected Xbox titles will still be showcased by our publishing partners at the event, and we wish the BIU well for the show.”
The news also follows Nintendo and Sega’s decisions to skip Europe’s biggest consumer games event.

Computing giant to focus on smaller, more localised events

Microsoft has confirmed it won't be attending the Tokyo Game Show.
It follows news that the platform holder won't be attending Gamescom and will instead focus on smaller, localised events.

At TGS last year, Microsoft revealed Grasshopper Manufacture's Diabolical Pitch. In 2010, the firm announced a string of Japanese-developed Kinect titles, including Project Draco, Rise of Nightmares and Haunt.

A group of Congressmen have sent letters to the US International Trade Commission over issues between Microsoft and Motorola
A group of Congressmen have sent letters to the US International Trade Commission asking the organization to decide against a ban of the Xbox 360 console. ITC administrative law judge David Shaw recommended a ban after Microsoft's console was found to infringe on patents held by Motorola Mobility. The Congressmen accused Motorola of abusing fair, reasonable, and non-discriminatory (FRAND) patents to seek an exclusion order. They join a growing chorus against the ban on the console, including recent additions Activision and IBM.
"It would be severely detrimental to the U.S. economy to allow an essential patent holder to obtain an injuction against an industry participant instead of licensing their patents on FRAND terms," patent lawyer Mark G. Davis of Weil, Gotshal & Mangeswrote to US ITC secretary Lisa Burton.
Eight members of the US House of Representatives wrote a letter to ITC chief Deanna Okun opposing the ban: Rep. Dave Reichert, Rep. Norm Dicks, Rep. Jim McDermott, Rep, Doc Hastings, Rep. Adam Smith, Rep. Rick Larsen, Rep. Cathey McMorris Rodgers, and Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler.
"An exclusion order against the Xbox 360 consoles could threaten high-paying America jobs and continued economic growth in Washington and throughout the nation," they said in their joint letter.
Other tech companies including HP and Nokia have backed Microsoft in this matter. The US Federal Trade Commission also came out against the ban last week, according to Bloomberg. At the time, Motorola said it was willing to license the patent, but Microsoft and Apple were not willing to come to terms.
"To date, however, neither party has been willing to enter into a cross-license on reasonable terms and thus we all find ourselves in seemingly endless litigation," said Motorola in a statement.

In March, when Microsoft hired Phil Harrison, it was widely assumed that it was his time at Sony that got him the job. Harrison, however, tells us that while that was no doubt a factor, it was what he did in the years following his departure from Sony that were key.
Speaking to us at E3 last week, Harrison, once president of Sony's Worldwide Studios and now corporate vice-president of Microsoft's IEB division, bemoaned the "lazy" headlines - "Sony bloke joins Microsoft," as he puts it - that followed his appointment. Lazy, perhaps, but understandable; Harrison was a core member of the team that launched every console in the PlayStation family, and was widely perceived as the public face of PS3 in its early days.
Following his departure from Sony in 2007, Harrison joined Infogrames as president, and in 2010 he co-founded London Venture Partners, which invested in and advised UK mobile, social and cloud videogame companies. That made him the ideal man for Microsoft, whose E3 conference made it abundantly clear that the company's plans extend far beyond console gaming.
"[That experience] is incredibly relevant, and I believe it's one of the reasons why they wanted me to be part of the team," he told us. "I think there's been some lazy headline writing … [but] that's not really what it is.
"It's the four years I've spent in the middle, working with mobile companies, with social and cloud companies, investing in businesses, understanding new business and audience engagement models. That, I think, is giving me a toolbox to play with which is very relevant to the future of Microsoft and Xbox."
That future, of course, remains shrouded in secrecy, but Harrison admits that what drew him to Microsoft was "the strength of the vision. I signed an NDA, and was exposed to the future roadmap of the company going many years into the future and that, combined with the talent in the senior leadership team, was what convinced me to join."
That Microsoft has the financial means to do pretty much as it pleases, of course, was also a factor, and Harrison praises the "amazing resources" at his disposal. The immediate focus is onSmartGlass, the cross-platform, second-screen technology that will launch later this year. That, Harrison says, neatly encapsulates what drew him to Microsoft, and vice versa.
"It's a really complicated technical problem to solve - to get the integration seamlessly play and resume on different devices and move content from the screen to the touch device, and vice versa, via the cloud," he said. "I think Microsoft is one of a small handful of companies on the planet that has the capability to do it."

It doesn't bring quite the overhaul that previous updates have, but at least some Xbox 360 users should be seeing a new software update available the next time they turn on their console. Xbox's Major Nelson confirmed on Twitter today that the spring update is rolling out to "a few" users this week, with everyone else set to receive it next week. As for details on the update, he's only gone as far as to confirm that it contains "behind the scenes improvements & prep for future enhancements." Presumably, those future enhancements include many of the new features we saw at E3 last week, but there's still no official word as to when they'll actually roll out.

The former Microsoft exec and Lionhead boss is also "shocked" by Microsoft's lack of attention to Windows gaming
In business, it's only natural to look across the board at the competition. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all keep a close eye on one another to see how respective strategies and product lines are evolving. According to ex-Lionhead leader Peter Molyneux, the Microsoft camp actually looks at Sony "obsessively."
In a wide-ranging interview with Molyneux last week at E3, GamesIndustry International prefaced a general question about Sony with our own comment that Molyneux and people in even higher offices at Microsoft must be constantly looking at Sony. Molyneux quickly noted, "Yes, very much so. Obsessively so."
Overall, Molyneux believes Sony's own first-party studio system could be its savior, but he's not sure the company's corporate troubles will enable them to flourish.
"If Sony can double down on those first party developers, give them the headroom to be inventive and be creative, especially when it comes it any next gen platform, then they could pull lots of rabbits out of the hat"
    Peter Molyneux

"Sony has always had a very strong first person line-up, which I think is incredibly smart. They've got good developers. They've got some very talented developers. The way I always feel with Sony is that if they double down on those first party developers, give them the headroom to be inventive and be creative, especially when it comes it any next generation platform, then they could pull lots of rabbits out of the hat," he remarked.
"What I worry about, with their corporate pressure and the pressure on costs, I worry about the ability to do that. More and more - and this is a personal thing - I just don't know where they're going in hardware terms. They had the Move, but it wasn't as early as the Wii and it wasn't as innovational as Kinect. They seem to be third in line in that race. I have expected, every single press conference for the last year, Sony to bring out this magic rabbit out from a huge hat and say, 'Aha, world. You really don't realize what's going on.' And I do worry about them."
Sizing up Microsoft's E3 showing, Molyneux commented, "I thought it was a very smart move on their behalf to focus on demos. And actually, I thought EA's line, 'You're going to see ten great demos from ten great developers,' you could have said the same for Microsoft. I felt there wasn't nearly as much Kinect stuff as previous years, which was a little bit of a surprise and a shock to me."
He continued, "I like the SmartGlass thing that they were talking about but I didn't completely understand it. I'd like to have seen more examples of it. It sounded like it was a big thing, because here's Microsoft supporting Apple. It really didn't get a lot of play for that. I like the Nike Fitness product. I thought [the conference] was good. It was, as usual, super hyper-professional. They finished on the second. But what did it tell us about them structurally in the next two, three years? I don't think it said anything about it. I think - in fact, it almost painted a stone wall in my mind. It was like they were holding their breath and waiting for something else"
Molyneux sees all the console makers as struggling to deal with the reality that they're no longer the only game in town in 2012.
"It's always shocked me about how little Microsoft cared about the Windows platform. There was hardly a single talk about Windows 8 at all. You would've thought, with a billion installed machines, there would be at least some play"
    Peter Molyneux

"It's going to be an interesting problem for all the console manufacturers I think. It's because so much computer entertainment, is spreading and diversifying over so many different platforms. They no longer have the luxury of keeping us all funneled into these consoles. A whole lot of manufacturers in the industry have been in a luxurious position for so long, where they could restrict the entertainment content to the masses. They did a very good job of squeezing the PC out and making this just about three formats and now it feels like it's sand dripping through their fingers. It's escaping from them," he observed.
Speaking of the PC, Molyneux was also surprised by Microsoft's continued lack of attention to the PC format for gamers.
"I would hope the next generation would bring about a new wave of innovation. If we don't do that in consoles, then you will find that those people that want innovation will start retreating to other formats. Look at the PC. It's incredible to me how there's been a resurgence in PC gaming. There's a lot more innovation now... I think that's the other thing about the Microsoft press conference. It's always shocked me about how little Microsoft cared about the Windows platform. There was hardly a single talk about Windows 8 at all. You would've thought, with a billion installed machines, there would be at least some play. And the whole metro interface is much more gamified, but there was no talk about it at all," Molyneux

But top-end titles 'may move to new platforms such as TV after the next generation of consoles'

Triple-A games will not disappear in the near to long term future, industry icons Ian Livingstone and Peter Molyneux have claimed.
Speaking at the Bafta Games questions time, the games veterans agreed that triple-A development was here to stay, although the way in which customers recieve it may change.

“I don’t think triple-A games will ever go away because they are still leading the way in terms of production values, investment and R&D,” said Eidos life president Ian Livingstone.
“It’s just how the next consoles are going to survive, will there be any hardware after the next-generation? Probably not, it’ll probably all be embedded in TV.”
22 Cans founder and former creative director of Microsoft Games Studios Europe Peter Molyneux said that whilst the sector for blockbuster games would not disappear, there would be less and less titles meeting the high standards expected at the top-end of gaming.

For all of you that found yourselves wanting to use Kinect to control something but had no idea what to do with it, or how to get the data from it, you’re in luck. Kineticspace is a tool available for Linux/mac/windows that gives you the tools necessary to set up gesture controls quickly and easily. As you can see in the video below, it is fairly simple to set up. You do you action, set the amount of influence from each body part (basically telling it what to ignore), and save the gesture. This system has already been used for tons of projects and has now hit version 2.0.
