A group of hackers known simply as Anonymous has claimed to be planning and perpetrating a series of hacking attacks on Sony in support of two of the hackers implicated in the PS3 jalibreaking furore.
Action, the group says, will be taken in response to the company's continued legal pursuit of George 'Geohot' Hotz and Alexander Egorenkov, or Graf_Chokolo.
Anonymous is a collection of hackers with an anti-corporate agenda and a track-record of successfully disruptive tactics. Previously, the group has claimed responsibility for denial of service (DOS) attacks on Mastercard and Amazon for their compliance with US government demands to stop doing business with Wikileaks.
You have victimised your customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target every person who seeks this information.
    Anonymous

The group also claims to have brought down the website of the right wing fundamentalist Christian group the Westboro Baptist Church and infiltrated the email system of security firm HBGary.
A statement issued as a press release on the group's website announces the group's intentions to make Sony the next target.
"Congratulations, Sony," reads the announcement. "You have now received the undivided attention of Anonymous. Your recent legal action against our fellow hackers, GeoHot and Graf_Chokolo, has not only alarmed us, it has been deemed wholly unforgivable.
"You have abused the judicial system in an attempt to censor information on how your products work. You have victimised your customers merely for possessing and sharing information, and continue to target every person who seeks this information.
"In doing so, you have violated the privacy of thousands. This is the information they were willing to teach to the world for free. The very same information which you wish to suppress for the sake of corporate greed and the complete control of users."
As damning as the group's statement is, there also appears to be some unrest in its ranks in respect to the correct course of action. Last month, a splinter group claiming to be made up of former Anonymous members contacted Forbes and Gawker, calling themselves Backtrace Security.
That group claims that the current members of Anonymous have lost sight of the original mission statement for the group, being sidelined into 'hactivism' instead of playful mischief. As a result, Backtrace Security has threatened to release the details of several anonymous members.
The group also handed over logs from a private IRC channel known as #HQ which belongs to Anonymous, showing the group's plans to infiltrate HBGary as well as other evidence of criminal activities, information certain to be of interest to US authorities.
"The bastards are becoming arrogant sociopaths," Backtrace Security member A5h3r4 told Gawker. "Acting first, not thinking of the consequences. They're recruiting children. I am a pretty far left person - I believe in privacy and free expression, but Anonymous is a vigilante group now. A mob without conscience. And I worry they will radicalise even more. In short, I believe they're on their way to becoming a genuine threat."
Whether the group's efforts will have any bearing on the Sony case remains to be seen, but the platform holder is already heavily invested in the case, which Hotz is contesting. No public evidence of a successful attack on Sony has yet to come to light.

EA's Crysis 2 is No.1 again but Zumba Fitness is this week’s star as it rockets to second place following Wii release

505 Games’ Zumba Fitness has shot up the charts this week just one place behind EA’s Crysis 2 which holds on to No.1.
The second top spot for Crysis 2 represents EA’s sixth No.1 of the year following other titles at the top such as FIFA 11 and Dragon Age II.

But 505 Games saw the strongest growth this week with sales of Zumba Fitness jumping 3,148 per cent week-on-week following the release of the fitness game on Wii. It was released on Xbox 360 in late 2010 and PS3 Move earlier this year.
Zumba Fitness is also 505 Games’ highest ever entry in the chart, with previous bests including Naughty Bear and Cooking Mama at No.5.
Other new releases from EA include Shift 2 Unleashed which debuted at No.4 and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12 which reaches No.6. Meanwhile, THQ’s new WWE All Stars brawler also breaks into the Top Ten at No.7.
Nintendo’s Pokémon White and Black dropped to No.9 and No.13 respectively, while its evergreen seller Art Academy rose from No.33 to No.9 following a sales increase of 208 per cent.
Here’s the Gfk Chart-Track Top Ten:
    1. Crysis 2 (EA)
    2. Zumba Fitness (505 Games)
    3. LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars (Activision/LucasArts)

We have another exclusive video teaser for all of our readers. XCM has just released a teaser video of their upcoming XCM Multi-Charger Plus. This is an update to their XCM Multi-Charger. We reviewed the Multi-Charger back in November 2009 and still use it till this day to charge our PS3 & Xbox 360 controllers, Blackberry, iPod Touch and whatever other USB device needs to be charged. Not only does the Multi-Charger Plus still have 4 USB ports but it now has docking stations for PS3 Move and Navigation controllers. Hopefully they heard our concerns about the short power cable and made it longer on the XCM Multi-Charger Plus.

XCM Multi-Charger Plus can be used on the following:
    • PS3™ Move and Navigation controllers (2 sets)
    • PS3™ DualShock and Sixaxis controllers
    • PSP™ series (1000-3000 series and PSP™ Go)
    • iPhone™ series (iPhone 2G, 3G, 3GS and 4)
    • iPad™ series (iPad™ and iPad 2™)
    • NDS™ series (DS, DS Lite, DSi and 3DS)
    • Xbox 360™ controllers
    • and all devices that supports a 5v USB input such as Android devices (phones/tablets), Blackberry™, iPod™, mobile devices, MP3 players and many more!

No word on pricing or release date but we don't expect this to retail no more than $30USD. We'll have more information when it becomes available to us. Play-Asia and Amazon will be carrying it when it becomes available.

The PSP was the best selling console in Japan last year, according to a newly published set of sales figures.
Enterbrain data reported by Andriasang shows that Sony's handheld sold 2,640,499 to edge out the DS – which sold 2,523,142 – and top the sales chart.
PlayStation 3 finished in third with 1,407,126, narrowly beating the Wii.

Here's the full chart, with life-to-date sales in brackets:
    1. PlayStation Portable: 2,640,499 (16,867,853)
    2. Nintendo DS: 2,523,142 (32,598,870)
    3. PlayStation 3: 1,407,126 (6,341,950)
    4. Wii: 1,397,498 (11,534,590)
    5. Nintendo 3DS: 801,423
    6. Xbox 360: 195,563 (1,448,665)
Another sales report published earlier this week should give you some idea of how this measures up on a global scale.

DS RPG Pokémon Black/White took the software crown shifting 5,149,022 units, followed by PSP beast-battler Monster Hunter Portable 3rd with 4,372,182. The full top five looked like this:
    1. Pokemon Black & White (DS): 5,149,022
    2. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP): 4,372,182
    3. Wii Party (Wii): 1,826,857

A series of reports from various sources have shown that Sony's PlayStation 3 is now likely to have a larger global install base than its Microsoft rival, although both still trail behind Nintendo's Wii in all territories.
Market research firm Strategy Analytics published its global figures, indicating that the PS3 surpassed Xbox 360 in lifetime sales at the end of 2010, reaching 43.4 million. The same report lists Xbox 360's install base at that time as 42.9 million. Nintendo's Wii stands well clear at 75.5 million.
In the UK and US, Microsoft is still winning the tussle with Sony, but in Europe and Asia, the figures claim PS3 is more popular. A separate report, from IDG and quoted by GameStop in its recent yearly report, says that there are 14.7 million PS3s in Europe but only 13.7 million 360s.
Quoted in the same GameStop document, sourced from NPD, are figures from the end of 2010 which put 15.4 million PS3s in the US, but 25.4 million Xbox 360s.
"While the Kinect peripheral has given a boost to Microsoft's Xbox 360 strategy, the console's performance outside of the US continues to disappoint," said the author of the Strategy Analytics report, Jia Wu.
"Global demand for Sony's PS3 has exceeded that of the Xbox 360 in each of the past two years, and we expect that to continue over the coming years," Gamasutra quotes the report as saying, recommending that Microsoft "continue[s] to innovate around its motion sensor technology, which will become increasingly relevant in the smart home era."
A similar, UK specific report published yesterday by the ERA showed the PS3 gaining ground on the 360 too, with a declining Wii in first.

Millions enjoy the PlayStation 3 for the video games they play on it, but according to Sony it is wrong to describe the console as a game machine.
A more appropriate description, according to one Sony executive, is "entertainment media hub".
"We're trying to turn the PlayStation 3 into an entertainment media hub where you can not only play your games and get online with your Call of Duty community, but also find movies, find music, and bring that across," Sony Network Entertainment boss Shawn Layden told Eurogamer.
"People like to explore. Gamers are explorers. I worked with PlayStation for 14 years before I took on this position with Sony Network Entertainment. I started back in 1996. It was just that grey rectangle with the toaster lid on it. You threw the disc in and brought the waffle iron down, and that's it, you're good to go.
"Game machine is the wrong description these days. Console can mean so many things. It's a central hub if you will for all kinds of digital content."
Sony has attempted to broaden the traditional PlayStation audience in recent years with the addition of non-gaming applications to the PlayStation 3.
Cloud-based music subscription service Music Unlimited, which Layden runs, is just one example. You can rent and buy movies, view photos, edit video, watch music videos and watch telly through your PS3, too.
14.7 million PlayStation 3s have been sold throughout Europe. As of 25th January 2011, there were over 69 million registered PlayStation Network accounts worldwide.

Sales of the 3DS and PSP have reached parity just five weeks after the release of Nintendo's new console in Japan. Although the 3DS remains the number one selling hardware of the week it does so by a margin of only a few hundred units.
3DS sales for the week ending March 27 were 50,710, down from 61,394 the previous week. PSP sales were 50,479, but combined with 600 PSPgo sales made for a total of 51,079 - exceeding overall sales for the 3DS.
The 3DS's lifetime total in Japan now stands at 792,954 - well short of the 1.5 million units Nintendo was predicting by the end of the system's first month on sale. The hardware does not appear to be supply constrained, with the PSP instead recovering from reported stock issues the previous week.
Hardware sales for other formats were largely static, with the PlayStation 3 up over 2000 units to 28,973. Wii sales rose by a similar amount to 11,808. Nintendo DS sales rose by 4,500 units to 19,094, while the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 2 increased by a few hundred to 1,963 and 1,862, respectively.
Much of the PSP's hardware success this week was due to the release of Final Fantasy IV: The Complete Collection, which saw solid debut sales of 104,173.
Results for the rest of the software chart were weak though, with Namco Bandai's Gundam the 3D Battle on 3DS the only other new release in the top ten - with just 23,500 unit sales.

The PSP has narrowly missed retaking the weekly Japanese hardware crown just a month after the launch of the 3DS.
According to the latest Media Create data, as posted on Andriasang, the PSP sold 50,479 units last week compared to 50,710 3DS purchases. Nintendo's new console shifted 61,394 the week before, with its lifetime Japanese sales now sitting at 792,954.
The PlayStation 3 came in at third with 28,973, followed by the DS at 19,094 and Wii at 11,808. The Xbox 360 managed to bring in 1,963 new users.
Worrying figures for Nintendo. Supply issues are not to blame for the slump - the platform holder confirmed the system was in stock in Japanese stores when contacted by Eurogamer for clarification.
UK and US sales numbers for the 3DS aren't in yet, although Nintendo has claimed the new portable is its fastest selling handheld ever.
The PSP was up from 23,511 last week, with the release of Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection no doubt spurring the system on.

Square's repackaged RPG topped the software charts, selling 104,173 in its debut week. The rest of the top 10 looked like this:
    1. Final Fantasy IV: Complete Collection (PSP, Square Enix): 104,173 / NEW
    2. Dynasty Warriors 7 (PS3, Koei Tecmo): 36.548 / 357.113 (-46%)
    3. Gundam: The 3D Battle (3DS, Bandai Namco): 23.500 / NEW
    4. Dissidia: 012 (Duodecim) Final Fantasy (PSP, Square Enix): 21.741 / 403.912 (-30%)
    5. Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (PSP, Capcom): 16.444 / 4.401.653 (+11%)
    6. Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle (3DS, Level 5): 16.294 / 242.649 (-12%)
    7. Phantasy Star Portable 2: Infinity (PSP, SEGA): 14.403 / 300.418 (-11%)
    8. Nintendogs + Cats: French Bulldog / Shiba / Toy Poodle & New Friends (3DS, Nintendo): 13.219 / 160.742 (-10%)
    9. SD Gundam G Generation: World (PSP, Bandai Namco): 10.160 / 283.802 (-29%)
    10. Pokemon Black / White (DS, Pokemon Co.): 10.025 / 5.127.678 (+16%)
