For more details, to organise interviews or request a press ticket to the ceremony, please contact GameCity PR & Marketing Coordinator, Chris White[email protected]

Created to spark conversations about videogames outside of traditional channels and launched at GameCity6, the GameCity Prize received international recognition, with Markus ‘Notch’ Persson’s runaway success Minecraft grabbing the inaugural gong.

    Now with the Prize returning, GameCity has listened to the people and added a public consultation period to help inform the voting done by the secret Academy, resulting in the following longlist of nominations;

    • Bastion - Supergiant Games
    • Catherine - Atlus Persona Games

GameCity Director and Prize creator Iain Simons said, “The amazing response from the mainstream media and creative communities last year proved that there was a real gap in the cultural calendar for a Prize like this. As with everything GameCity does, we try and engage as many people as possible in the conversation about videogames.

Creating the public consultation period gave fans of titles the chance to have their voice heard and this is reflected in the incredibly diverse collection of titles in our longlist.”

The jury consists of Lord David Puttnam (Chair), Dave Gibbons, Ekow Eshun, Charlie Higson, Louise Brealey, Lucy Kellaway, Samira Ahmed, Wayne Hemingway and Jo Whiley. ...

    2. Wii U News

Nintendo UK has confirmed to Eurogamer that the Wii U will be region locked. That means you won't be able to import games from Japan or America and play them on your European Wii U. This was the case with 3DS, and this was the case with Wii.Nintendo's confirmation followed a translated revelation in Japanese magazine Famitsu: "What can be played on the Wii U is restricted by a region-lock feature; software not sold in the same region cannot be played."Well, at least it's raining.

Wii U license deal doesn't mean Unity for handheld anytime soon

    Nintendo

    nintendo-europe.com

    Unity

Unity Technologies developer relations officer Tracy Erickson has revealed the company is not currently looking to support the Nintendo handheld.
"Regarding Nintendo 3DS, that's kinda like asking about Pikmin 4 when Pikmin 3 hasn't even come out yet," she told NintendoLife.
"The relationship between Nintendo and Unity has reached an exciting new level and we're focused on Wii U. Timing is important here since the console launches in this year, too. While there are no current plans to support Nintendo 3DS, we're always looking at what platforms make sense for us to support, where developer demand is, and the opportunities available for our developer community."
Earlier this month Unity signed a major license deal with Nintendo to distribute the Unity engine to its network of studios, internal and external.
"The response has been phenomenal. Unity developers see the opportunity on Wii U; they want to innovate, they want to push the hardware, they want to try new things," added Erickson.
"Many of these developers haven't worked with a console before or perhaps haven't interacted with Nintendo. Naturally, there's a desire to see how Nintendo moves forward in distributing Unity via the Wii U SDK - pricing, availability, options for publishing - these are important questions that will be answered in the coming months."

    2. Wii U News

The Nintendo Wii U will be region-locked, preventing the playing of games imported from other regions, Nintendo has confirmed.
The publisher made its position clear to Japanese magazine Famitsu, where the comment was translated and posted to NeoGaf. Nintendo has since confirmed the move to various global news outlets.
"What can be played on the Wii U is restricted by a region-lock feature;" the comment reads. "Software not sold in the same region cannot be played."
With release and translation schedules often varying wildly between regions and continents, some games never achieve commercial release outside their home territories or experience long delays.
Although these titles are not deemed popular enough to make it commercially viable to bring them to new regions, fans waiting for certain titles will import games in order to play them. A region-locked machine makes that impossible.
Many titles have seen great success grow from the somewhat fanatical evangelism of importers. Final Fantasy, for example, was really pushed into the collective consciousness in the UK by the efforts of magazines such as Super Play, which exhorted readers to import the US version of Final Fantasy III until Nintendo recognised the demand.

    2. Apple News

Whilst enjoying the success of its latest iPhone 5 smartphone, Apple will have one more thing to celebrate as it has been voted as the coolest brand in the UK.
The survey, which is conducted by CoolBrands annually, polled over 3,000 consumers and a panel of 39 different experts.
Apple took the top spot of cool, whilst other technology and online firms celebrated success as YouTube, Twitter, Google and BBC iPlayer all appeared within the top ten.
Meanwhile, winner of the survey's past six polls, Aston Martin, appears to have lost its cool as it slipped to third place.
Other previously popular brands, which have dropped out of the top 20 include Ferrari, Chanel and Vivienne Westwood.
Surprisingly, a quarter of the survey's top brands are free to consumers.
Apple will undoubtedly take this as a moral victory over its closest rival Samsung, which continues to lead anadvertising campaign that attempts to mock the firm, its latest iPhone and its user base, in favour of its own Galaxy S3 device.
Quite how an advertising campaign - which is designed to alienate consumers and, essentially, make a mockery of them for liking the iPhone - is supposed to convert them to Samsung baffles me.
Even sweeter for Apple though will be the absence of Samsung from the poll's top 20 brands.
Apple fanboys rejoice, as for now, you are officially cool.
Here's the full top 20 for the CoolBrands '12 survey:

    1. Apple
    2. YouTube
    3. Aston Martin
    4. Twitter
    5. Google
    6. BBC iPlayer

    2. Apple iPhone

Apple has rolled out four TV adverts for the iPhone 5, including one which takes a little swipe at Samsung and its handsets with massive screens.
Voiced by Dumb and Dumber actor Jeff Daniels, the four ads focus on various aspects of the iPhone 5’s design and features. One of the ads, called ‘Thumb’, shows how the screen size of the new phone is the perfect size to use with one hand.
With Samsung’s latest Galaxy S3 advert boasting about how the phone’s screen is much bigger, it seems that Apple couldn’t resist pointing out how huge screen are difficult to use with one hand.
We can’t wait to see what ad Samsung brings out next, maybe something pointing fun at Apple fanboys with small hands?
Check out ‘Thumbs’ and the other Apple ads below:
