If you're planning your Black Friday around time-sensitive deals popping up at Amazon today, . Some of the list is guesswork, but all the deals look pretty reasonable to us ... that is, except for for Rayman Origins which you should feel guilty about buying that cheaply.

The games industry's insistence on selling big budget video games for $60 a pop is a broken model and needs fixing, so says the boss of 5th Cell - the developer behind DS hit Scribblenauts and forthcoming XBLA shooter Hybrid.Speaking in an interview with GameInformer, Jeremiah Slaczka argued that increased development and marketing costs mean that now only a small fraction of games have a chance of turning a profit."The $60 boxed game is a broken model," he claimed. "It was always broken, it's just more broken now because games cost so much to develop, produce and market."Before the model was tolerable, because the cost was reasonable enough to allow mediocre selling games to make money. Now it's just insane. If you aren't going to be a mega hit at $60, you might as well give up before you even try, because it's tens of millions down the hole."Slaczka offered THQ's Homefront FPS as a prime example, arguing that, compared to the likes of Call of Duty: Black Ops, it wasn't good enough to justify its $60 price tag."Homefront was an okay FPS - not great, not terrible, just okay. But as a consumer, why would I want to play an okay FPS when I can play a bunch of great FPS titles for the same price?"While over 13 million people bought Black Ops last year in the US alone, smashing records, less than just one million people bought Homefront in the US. The consumer voted with their wallet, right?"However, he argued that if THQ had taken a slightly different approach to how the game was sold, it might have stood a better chance of making its money back."What if you could rent Homefront for $4.99 for 24 hours from your console? What if Homefront was only $30 dollars upfront for the single player and if you liked it you could buy the multiplayer for an additional $30?," he suggested."All of the sudden it's not a binary purchase option anymore.""That doesn't mean all games have to go this route," he added. "There's still room for the AAA only, but a lot of titles should try a different method. It's a win-win scenario for everyone involved."Slaczka's argument echo comments made by Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski at GDC earlier this year, where he insisted that "the middle class game is dead".5th Cell's next game, ambitious XBLA shooter Hybrid, is expected to finally launch sometime in 2012, following a delay earlier this year."The shooter genre is really hard because there's such a high bar for quality to compete against. Even harder still is that that bar is defined by nuance and subtlety. It's a genre where something as simple as aiming and shooting take months of work to get right," he told GameInformer."We've spent so much time just working on making sure you can easily and smoothly move your crosshair and ensuring close, medium and long range combat all feel good. We know in this genre people are used to the best, and they expect it and you've got to deliver, it doesn't matter if it's XBLA for $15 or full retail price."

Around this time last year, Sony announced it had shipped just over 4 million units of its motion gaming peripheral, the PlayStation Move. And then in early April, about five months later, the company once again announced a new shipping number of around 8 million, doubling the original shipped number. Unfortunately for Sony, it seems the last seven months haven't maintained that momentum, with 1 million being added to the total shipped number (approximately 9 million in total), according to Industry Gamers.

As per usual, Sony isn't giving out hard numbers for units actually sold. It stands to reason, however, that if retailers have only ordered another 1 million units leading up to the holiday season, the peripheral likely isn't selling like, say, Walter White's crystal meth (hotcakes are so out of fashion).

Microsoft has been spinning a similar story with its own motion peripheral, the Kinect, holding to sales statements made last March (10 million sold -- not shipped) rather than offering new data. We're holding out hope that the two hardware companies are more vocal after the coming holiday sales bonanza, but we're not holding our breath either.

We'll admit it -- the Xbox Live Black Friday deals aren't exactly as thrilling as the competition's are, but there are still some big savings to be had. Take, for instance, the massively discounted Marvel vs Capcom 2 for just 320 MS Points ($4!), or Fallout 3's Games on Demand release -- sans DLC -- at 25 percent off (pricing varies by region -- $22.49 in the US). Those are both pretty solid deals!

Microsoft's Major Nelson also promises more deals this coming "Cyber" Monday, so if today's offers aren't as exciting as you'd hoped, there'll be even more in the coming days. Oh, and there's always the week-long XBL sale that Microsoft is running -- Super Meat Boy is still only $5 and still really great!

In the latest Iwata Asks column, not yet translated into English by Nintendo, the CEO discusses development of December's high-profile 3DS release, Mario Kart 7, with not only recent series developer Nintendo EAD but also Austin-based Retro Studios.

"But Retro Studios only worked on the Donkey Kong Country Returns level," you whimper. While that was true as of last E3, Hideki Konno, Manager and Producer at EAD Software Development Group No.1, tells Iwata that since several production designers were working to get Nintendogs + Cats ready for the 3DS launch, as well as other Nintendo projects, there was "an act of emergency" to get Mario Kart 7 finished by the end of the year.

Retro was brought in to help on some courses, notably the aforementioned DKC-themed level, and to work on the game's 16 classic courses, while EAD ostensibly worked on the 16 new tracks. With the 3DS still recovering from a rough launch, plagued by pricing concerns and a paucity of premium software, we'd say it was a smart move to ensure Mario Kart 7 would find its way onto shelves this year.

Microsoft has embraced hacker culture for Kinect, and it now sees the vast possibilities offered by a machine that requires people to just twitch or shout for it to function. Microsoft is now planning to integrate Kinect into next-generation televisions, The Daily reports (citing anonymous "sources familiar with the subject"), completely destroying the all-American pastime of searching for the remote. But that's not the most shocking part -- The Daily says Microsoft may be in "early stages of licensing" its Kinect tech to Vizio and Sony, whose Electronics branch produces high-def hardware.

Sony Electronics, in charge of Sony TVs, is a separate entity from Sony Computer Entertainment, which handles its video-game business, but this potential partnership seems awkward at best, and ludicrous at best-er. We won't believe it until a tangible product materializes, but until then, we're going to imagine the ridiculous company parties that could result from this rumored venture.

Sony's secondavant-garde tablet a la Android, the Tablet P, has finally made its high-fashioned self available online in the UK. The 3G-capable model has been slapped with a hefty £500 ($774) price tag, possibly explained in part by the pair of 5.5-inch touchscreens, which both tap into the same TruBlack technology used in Sony's Bravia TV range. The dual screen setup means that controls can be split to the lower half -- ideal for PlayStation-certified gaming or the occassional email barrage. If curiously curved clam shapes are doing it for you, offer up your pound sterling at the source link below.

Xbox UK’s new retail sales and marketing boss says the 360 has a lot more mileage left in it.
In fact Jonathan Grimes tells MCV in an interview this week he won’t be happy until every household has an Xbox.
“There’s definitely a lot more to achieve,” he offered as an update on Xbox global boss Don Mattrick’s E3 prediction that 360 would end the year as the world’s best-selling console.
“What we have to offer is relevant to most UK consumers – until I have one in every household there is always going to be growth.”
