Eidos Montreal will reveal a second project on May 11, according to a page from the latest issue of EDGE Magazine. The studio is currently working on Deus Ex 3, the next installment of the first-person hybrid franchise started by Ion Storm in 2000.

Some are speculating that a new version of Thief, the stealth franchise originally put together by the now defunct Looking Glass Studios, could be what's revealed. This is fueled in part by a story from last month where Eidos Montreal put up a post using a Thief-like font. The announcement date is also confirmed on Eidos Montreal's Twitter account.

As of publish we've yet to get any kind of official response to questions regarding the announcement. We'll update with anything else that's made available before May 11. ...

As we've pointed out with numbers, few Japanese publishers are as tardy with their European releases as Square Enix. So how's the Final Fantasy XIII localisation coming along, then?

In a statement that's not exactly encouraging for European fans, Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase has told Videogamer:

Obviously we would like to release [in Europe] as soon as possible. Traditionally the Final Fantasy numbered series, it takes about half a year between the release in Japan and the release in North America, and another half a year before it's released in Europe. But we would like to minimise this, this time.

For example we have already started recording English voices, and also the text localisation has been in progress, too. Normally we complete the Japanese version first, then move on to the US and EU versions, but this time there are some tasks that are happening simultaneously. So this time we're hoping to release sooner than a year later than the Japanese release.

It's amazing that we're nine years into the 21st century, and 13 games into the Final Fantasy series, and Square Enix still don't have their shit together. How is it Metal Gear Solid 4 can ship worldwide simultaneously, while Square can only offer "we're hoping to release sooner than a year later than the Japanese release"?

Hope is no guarantee (less than a year can still be 11 months!), and hope won't cut it with angry Europeans, Square Enix. Especially the ones that can't speak English, and thus can't import the US version. ...

With E3 just weeks away, expect to see a torrent of official announcements from publishers about what they'll be bringing to the show. One of the first out of the gate is Sega. Via Twitter.

The third-party publisher has revealed six of its E3-bound wares, confirming the expo appearance of already announced games. That includes software like Platinum Games' Bayonetta and Obsidian Entertainment's Alpha Protocol. But there are plenty of Sega titles missing from the official list, including expected showings like Aliens Vs. Predator, the first title to be released under Sega's Aliens licensing deal.
    • The half-dozen titles that we're 100% sure Sega will be showing include:
    • Alpha Protocol
    • Bayonetta
    • Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games
    • Planet 51
    • The Conduit
    • Vancouver 2010

That list is missing some goods from Sega we expect (or desperately hope) to see within the next year, including Phantasy Star 0, Infinite Space and Shining Force Feather for the Nintendo DS, as well as higher profile games like Aliens: Colonial Marines and whatever Sonic the Hedgehog installment Sonic Team has been burdened with.

Surely, Sega will have more than just that to show at E3 this year, including more of its Xbox Live Arcade lineup. We'll just have to wait a bit longer for the official word to come down from the mountain. ...

Red Steel fans have been treated to a look at Red Steel 2 in action a little earlier than Ubisoft had planned, with an internal-only trailer being leaked on to the internet for all to see.

Update: Ubisoft has told CVG that this is a pre-production trailer, was for "internal use only" and was never intended for a general release. It couldn't make any further comments over the content of the trailer, including the mention of its "Destination PlayStation" event at the start but, as we said below, we doubt PS3 owners have any surprises in store.

Ubi's sequel is a first-person, cell shaded affair, as you can see in the in-game sections of the above trailer, and uses Wii Motion Plus for sword fighting that Nintendo Power said "finally feels as real as you'd dreamed".

Strangely, it appears to have been planned for a showing at Ubi's retail event, Destination PlayStation, although we doubt this hints to any other format release.

Nintendo has announced a 5th June release date for New Play Control! Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

This is another of the GameCube remakes for Wii, following the likes of Pikmin and Mario Power Tennis from earlier in the year. The best up to now, for our money, is definitely Pikmin 2.

DK: Jungle Beat comes back to life with two extra stages plus the mandatory Wiimote controls. The GameCube original had a bongo peripheral to pound in time with musical prompts, which rewarded you with banana points depending on your accuracy.

Jungle Beat was short but refreshingly unique, and scrapping the need for the expensive bongos could make this Wiivamp worthwhile.

Head over to our review of Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat on GameCube for our thoughts, or wait a little while longer for the Wiimake review. ...

Sony has unveiled a new music visualiser program in development for PlayStation 3.

As SCEA's Rusty Buchert explains over on the US PlayStation blog, it's titled .deTuned and is the brainchild of demoscene stars .theprodukkt.

".deTuned is a bit of an odd beast that offers an abstract and surreal interactive experience like nothing else," says Rusty. It's "not exactly a game or an art piece like Linger in Shadows", but lets you "create your own visual to accompany your favorite music tracks on the XMB".

Then, using the Sixaxis, you can "manipulate the given scene by interacting with and modifying a man and his world". You can even tweak your music as you play, too.

A release date for .deTuned has yet to be announced. Here's hoping that it won't be too long before it's available to play with, and that you won't have to be on too many drugs to make playing with it worth the effort. ...

Talk about leveling up. According to his keynote at the Los Angeles Game Conference 2009, Atari founder Nolan Bushnell launched the company with only $250 in capital. This was in 1972. Five years later, they sold the company to Warner Bros. for $28 million dollars, and by 1982 Atari generated $2 billion in annual sales.

Today, Nolan is a wealthy man, but the co-creator of Pong and the founder of Chuck E. Cheese could have been even more wealthy. Way more wealthy. At the keynote, Nolan told the story of two engineers under his employ at Atari: Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. They were partners, and Jobs was “too abrasive” to work with other engineers, so Nolan created a “night shift” for them to work on, and gave them a project none of the other engineers wanted. A game called Breakout.

Obviously, Breakout broke out as a huge hit and the Steves decided to found Apple Computer. Nolan’s big regret? They offered him 1/3 of the company for a mere $50,000 investment, and he turned it down.

If you're thinking the pending digital release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 is any indication that the path is clear for "Marvel vs. Capcom 3," think again. "The short answer is no, that's not any part of this deal," Capcom's Seth Killian lamented to Joystiq at a media event yesterday. "What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do." For now, licensing issues are preventing further developments.

The same is true for a North American release of Tatsunoko vs. Capcom. "It's a lot of 'dance with the lawyers' on that one," explained Killian. "The rights holders for Tatsunoko in Japan are one company, but in the U.S. it's ... 13 companies -- and some are very attentive and some are not." So if you've been holding your breath for this one, you might want to consider coming up for air.

Killian also told Joystiq that Capcom is considering releasing Marvel vs. Capcom 2-branded arcade sticks (à la the popular SFIV controllers). "It's a discussion ... we would love to make it happen. If you saw the 'leak' of those MadCatz sticks, that was actually B.S. That was a complete fabrication, but it's something we would love to do."
