As a leading Hong Kong based online retailer of video and PC games, Play-Asia.com always feels committed to the local gaming community.

Hong Kong is a vibrant gaming city, almost everybody plays video games regularly, e.g. on the way to work or school, in the subway, in buses etc. Video gaming is simply everywhere in the city.

Besides a large number of casual gamers, the local e-Sports scene is also getting stronger and larger, reaching a new level of professionalism every year.

One of the key drivers of this positive development of e-Sports in Hong Kong is the World Cyber Games Hong Kong preliminary event, traditionally held on the Ani-Com Comic & Game fair.

The World Cyber Games have grown into the sole gaming event that connects a total of six continents, seventy countries and more than a million participants every year. The WCG truly brought the Olympic spirit to the e-Sports scene.

    At Ani-com Comic & Game
fair 2007Play-Asia.com joined the WCG as a local sponsoring partner of the Hong Kong Preliminaries in 2007 and we are proud to continue this partnership with the WCG Hong Kong.

Hong Kong's gamers deserve a top notch e-Sport event, and we are happy to contribute to the success of the WCG Hong Kong.

Besides a general sponsorship of the event, Play-Asia is happy to endow prizes for the first runners up in all competitions in this year's preliminaries.

The first runners up of all single competitions will receive a store-credit voucher valuing US$ 250 while the two first runners of the two team events will receive store-credits of US$ 500 per team.

Furthermore, just like last year, Play-Asia.com will be the exclusive provider of the official WCG Hong Kong T-shirts. Preorder now your personal souvenir of the World Cyber Games Hong Kong 2008 and become part of the event.

To determine the fittest amongst the fit, the games will be held in several rounds. Gamers of the team events will first be entered into the pre-preliminaries held between 21st to 27th July and those who qualifies will be invited to the
Players at Ani-com 2007preliminaries with the participants of the individual events held in Ani-com Comic & Game fair between 1st and 5th of August.

Closely following the end of the preliminaries is the Asian Championship held in Singapore. From 8th to 10th August, national teams throughout Asia will compete for gold medals and prove that they are the best amongst the best within the continent.

Like the Olympics, the Grand Final of this event is passed on to a different country every time to demonstrate the event's global significance. Last year it was held in Seattle, US, this year it will be held in Cologne, Germany.

The finalists who won out in the national preliminaries will have time to refine their skills and prepare for their performances as the finals will be held four months after the regional championships, between 5th and 9th November. A total of eight PC and four Xbox360 games will be featured in the event and the best team sportsmen, strategists, fighters, racers, guitarists etc in the world will be born.

Brainy Gamer has an interesting reflection on old puzzle games and why their style of gameplay seems to be a dying art. According to the author modern gamers seem more interested in combat and seem to have lost the patience for difficult puzzles.
"Despite my fondness for the adventure games of yore, it appears the days of puzzles in narrative games have come and gone. Puzzles - especially the serial unlocking variety found in the old LucasArts games - seem to have become a relic of a bygone era. Where they once provided a necessary ludic element to a—clever and often complex narrative - designed to add challenge and force the player to earn his progress through the story - few modern players have the patience for such challenges anymore."

CBHD, née CH-DVD -- the Chinese version of the now-deceased HD DVD format -- is in production, gearing up for a fourth quarter launch. DigiTimes cites reports from enorth.com.cn that Shanghai United Optical Disc has laid out the first production line, although Taiwanese disc makers (already burned by HD DVD) aren't as confident it can take on Blu-ray, even with considerably lower royalty fees and hardware costs for disc replicators. Coming alongside news that Chinese-built Blu-ray players based on increasingly affordable hardware is on the way, plus a decided lack of studio support, it's not hard to see how this one will turn out (again.) Not to underrate China's national pride, but unless it can gain an unexpected foothold among DVD pirates, CBHD will probably be on the high definition scrap heap alongside HD DVD, EVD and the rest before long.

Seeing as Apple's FairPlay DRM has already been cracked for music and movies, it's not at all surprising that people are starting to poke holes in the FairPlay-based iPhone App Store. The first loophole is pretty simple, since it doesn't appear that FairPlay links the iPhone hardware to specific Apple IDs: just log into iTunes from any of the machines authorized to use your account, and every app you've purchased will be available for free re-downloading to any attached phone. Since music and movies wrapped in FairPlay can be transferred to unlimited iPods and iPhones, we're guessing this little trick will work indefinitely, but we wouldn't depend on it.

There's also a more traditional crack which allows apps to be stripped of DRM and shared without using iTunes, although you'll have to jailbreak your phone to do it. The first app to be widely pirated is Super Monkey Ball, which isn't surprising, and it seems like several other apps have followed it out onto various torrent sites. In addition to the relatively simple jailbreak procedure, running cracked apps requires you to open up SSH access and do some mucking around, so unless your time is worth less than $10, it's probably not worth it. Still, we've got a feeling that won't stop the hardcore pirates out there from doing their thing, and it'll be interesting to see how Apple deals with the problem -- we'd bet that it just looks the other way.

Finally, all these DRM-related restrictions have led to a lot of speculation about offering open source apps under the GPL in the App Store. Since the GPL generally forbids any restrictions on redistribution, it would seem that FairPlay's restrictions would put a software author on pretty shaky ground if they use GPL code in an official iPhone app, as they would have to violate the terms of the GPL by putting the final app in the store under FairPlay without source. Furthermore, even if an iPhone coder starts clean and doesn't use existing GPL code, they can't choose to license the app under the GPL separately from App Store distribution, since sharing source is against Apple's iPhone SDK NDA. Of course, it's not really like open-source devs to sit around getting bogged down in legalities -- Wordpress has already put up all the code for its official iPhone app under the GPL, and it would be a pretty stupid PR move for Apple to ask for it to come down. The only true solution for Apple would be to drop the NDA and allow some apps to be distributed and shared without FairPlay, but that's not going to happen overnight -- and even then there will be logistical and legal hurdles to overcome. In other words: rock, meet hard place.

Funny, these are exactly the sorts of ridiculous, illogical, and inane problems you get when you start screwing around with DRM -- but you already knew that, didn't you, Steve?

Amazon and Circuit City might have that new 60GB Xbox 360 SKU up for pre-order with delivery in August, but Microsoft's game console has always tended to pop up in Targets first, and this time out's no exception -- yep, there it is, hanging out in NYC. Anyone seen one poking around the dish towels and cheap-chic furniture at their local? Let us know in comments!
