Homebrew developer Chilly Willy has released his personal port of JFDuke3D for the PSP. The port itself based on code from Stereomike’s Duke Nukem 3D conversion, which was later followed up by MrPeanut and Wally.

Here's Chilly Willy's personal build of JFDuke3D for the PSP! Included are the shareware group file and some mini-instruments so you can play right out of the box.

    Good news!
    - Now sets the CPU to 333MHz.
    - No more problem with the pitch of sounds.
    - Doesn't crash when generating the music for the next level.
    - Quits from the Home button or the game menu without crashing.
    - Supports TV out. Hold TRIANGLE button when start from XMB for TV/video options.

    Bad news!
    - While SDL will now resample the sounds correctly, it takes it longer to do so. There will be a brief hiccup right when Duke3D uses a sound for the very first time (per level).
    - To keep timidity from crashing when generating the music for the next level, I had to flush all the SDL sound samples. This exacerbates the first issue with SDL.

My thanks to Wally, Mr. Peanut, and all the others who worked on this before me. This is by no means all my own effort.

Developer Chilly Willy has released a minor update to MK2k’s conversion of the homebrew title Jump ‘n Bump, adding TV-out functionality. Players can simply hold down the Triangle button while launching the game to configure the built-in video options.

While I'm at it, here's a minor update to Jump 'n Bump that adds TV support. Just hold down the TRIANGLE button when you start it from the XMB for the TV/video options.

My thanks to MK2k for the initial conversion.

THQ and Sega impressed its retail and distribution partners across PAL territories last week, with a perfectly executed trade conference comprising over 400 delegates.

Following on from the success of last year’s inaugural event in Malta, the two games giants joined forces in Lisbon to show off their range of releases between now and next March.

Representatives from over 35 different countries saw detailed presentations for a slate of key titles covering everything from hard core next-gen to big licences and casual gaming.

Sega Europe president Mike Hayes and THQ executive VP of international Ian Curran (pictured) demonstrated recent growth in both the business as a whole and across the two companies.

“Screen Digest expects software sales in PAL territories to top $12 billion this year – that’s growth of five per cent over 2007,” said Hayes.

“But we think this is a little conservative. Double digit growth, or even as high as 15 per cent looks achievable.”

Sega and THQ are currently tracking at a combined market share in PAL of over 12 per cent, up a third on 2007 and up two thirds on 2003.

“Between us, our games will represent a sales opportunity across PAL of $1.5 billion at retail this year,” added Curran.

Both companies were applauded again by retailers and distributors for holding a single event that covered off two key publishers.

But whilst the addition of a third publisher would probably prove popular, there are currently no plans to widen the event for 2009.

Newly-promoted Microsoft bods Shane Kim and Phil Spencer have shared their daring predictions for Xbox 360 in 2008, going as far as stating that it could top last year's spectacular Halo 3-BioShock-Call of Duty triple hit.

"I think the platform is just as strong, if not stronger [than last year]" said Shane Kim, now corporate VP of strategy and business development, told CVG's suit and tie-wearing cousin Next-Gen.biz.

"That's hard to say, because we had incredible titles last year with BioShock, Halo 3, Mass Effect and Call of Duty 4. ... Especially when you look at Halo 3, which was a phenomenal industry event, it's easy to look back and go 'you can't possibly be as strong.'

"But if you look at the initial success of Grand Theft Auto IV on Xbox 360," Kim continued, "that's been super, and we have exclusive [DLC] content coming too. Gears of War 2 is going to be huge, Fable 2 is going to be huge.

"So I don't know. I believe that we're going to have just as big of a year in terms of content on Xbox 360. Maybe we don't have a particular exclusive that's as big as Halo 3, but I do think that Gears 2 and Fable 2 will be really big hits."

But of course like the man says, after the mammoth entertainment launch that was Halo 3, many of us will scoff at the thought of MS rolling in and topping that in 2008. When asked how the chances were of MGS ever creating a franchise as big as (or bigger than) Halo, Kim replied:

"Really good. And I'll tell you why. We've got the talent, we've got people who are always on the lookout for new ideas and talent, and most importantly we have the commitment and the will to create those hits. Those are not easy tasks. There would've been lots of people in the past that would've not stuck with various projects that have turned out to be very successful for us.

"In no way would I say that Halo, or what we know of Halo today, is the peak of what's possible. Far from it. It's another benchmark, another milestone to exceed in the future." ...

Microsoft's Zune can learn from the "cautionary tales" of the PSP, Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices Devision boss Robbie Bach has said.

Speaking in an interview with Venture Beat, Bach said that while the PSP was "reasonably successful" as a games portable, he thinks that music and video were an after though for the platform.

"The PSP is a reasonably successful product at the profit-and-loss level. But as a product concept, there are cautionary tales to learn from it," he said. "While it is good at producing audio, it's not a good music player because it doesn't have local storage (except for flash memory slots).

"You can't keep your music there. It has a beautiful screen, but you can only get the video under the Universal Media Disc format. That format hasn't been successful.

"On a game level, it has done well," he continued. "But even there, it is mostly PlayStation 2 ports. There isn't much original content. When you do these devices, they can't be pretty good at a lot of things. They need to be great at what they do."

Learning form the PSP, says Bach, Microsoft has decided to focus on music with its Zune music player, which means that we shouldn't expect a singing and dancing Zune games service any time soon.

"We think of it more as a portable entertainment player," said Bach. "It is technically possible to do games on there. But you aren't going to see a broad gaming effort from us until we sort that through and have it figured out.

"I don't think of Zune like the PSP. The PSP is a game player that also does video and music. We think of Zune as a broad-based entertainment device."

That said, according to Bach the Zune is a greater platform for games than the iPod, which recently unveiled plans for an iPhone games store.

"It is more compelling than an iPod because it actually has a D-pad. From a gaming perspective, it is reasonably well suited. You can read a little or read a lot into it. The point is that we think of it as a portable entertainment device."
