EA's Casual Entertainment Label and Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment today announced that the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince video game will be released later this year to coincide with the Warner Bros. Pictures film based on J.K. Rowling's sixth Harry Potter book.

"We believe that the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince video game represents a milestone in the movie tie-in genre," said Harvey Elliott, Head of EA Bright Light studio in the UK where the Harry Potter franchise has its home. "Building on the technological advancements of previous games in the series and with a particular focus on the unique control system of Nintendo's Wii, the team here is working closely with the filmmakers to create an immersive interactive experience that captures the story, the action, the excitement and, above all, the fun of the film. "

"Working with EA, we look forward to offering fans a compelling Harry Potter video game, one which captures the thrilling storyline and high visual quality of the movie," said Scott Johnson, Vice President, Business Development for Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. "The adherence to the rich fiction is a trademark of this franchise and with Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince fans will experience the most authentic and enjoyable game in the series to date."

In Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn, whom he believes holds crucial information. Meanwhile, the students are under attack from a very different adversary as teenage hormones rage across the ramparts. Harry finds himself more and more drawn to Ginny, but so is Dean Thomas. And Lavender Brown has decided that Ron is the one for her, only she hadn't counted on Romilda Vane's chocolates! And then there's Hermione, simmering with jealously but determined not to show her feelings. As romance blossoms, one student remains aloof. He is determined to make his mark, albeit a dark one. Love is in the air, but tragedy lies ahead and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

In the game of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, players will return to Hogwarts to help Harry survive a fraught sixth year. They will also have a chance to engage in exciting wizard duels, mix and brew magical ingredients in Potions class and take to the air to lead the Gryffindor Quidditch team to victory. Players may even get sidetracked by Ron's romantic entanglements as they journey towards a dramatic climax and discover the identity of the Half-Blood Prince.

Under development by EA Bright Light Studio, the team behind the worldwide success of the Harry Potter library of games, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is scheduled for release in time for the movie launch this fall for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, PSP, Nintendo DS, Windows PC, Macintosh and mobile devices. ...

There's nothing "quick" about having to register three unique IDs to play the Metal Gear Online beta. But, assuming most would-be participants have already got a PlayStation Network account, the real pre-game obstacle has been the Konami ID and its supplementary Game ID.

Since the beta (with its laggard update patch) was released for download last Wednesday, the Konami ID registration site has been a case study in how not to prepare for a traffic spike. Thankfully, the site is now back online with a temporary "quick registration" option for those of you eager to push past the bureaucracies and land in some actual gameplay, um, rather, return to the waiting room... ...

Epic remains determined to bring mods to Unreal Tournament III on Xbox 360, boss Mark Rein telling OXM UK "We'll figure it out.

"We know some of these great mods are going to play a role on Xbox 360, even if we have to get some people and bring them over ourselves," Rein added.

He said similar to CVG on this subject last year, but at the time described this method of mod delivery as a "worst case scenario" and still held out hope that a user-managed way of bringing UTIII mods to the console - as it operates on PS3 - would be possible.

In fact, according to OXM Epic continues to hold out hope, Rein saying that the developer's "cautiously optimistic" that a solution to getting round Microsoft's reluctance to share user-generated content is coming.

But expect this to occur in the future rather than it being an out-the-box feature of Unreal Tournament III on Xbox 360. ...

Grand Theft Auto IV art director Aaron Garbut has shed some light on how a GTA game comes together behind the scenes, revealing that the process is actually very organic rather than carefully planned.

"There are essentially two routes you can go down in making a game: you can do a load of pre-production upfront and plan it all out in advance or you can just dive in and be a bit more organic," Garbut told Eurogamer, as you can see in part two of our exclusive interview.

And while you might imagine that the former is necessary on something as vast and all-encompassing as GTA IV, apparently you're wrong.

"The first option is the safest, it lets everyone know where they are from day one, it lets everyone know what needs done and it's the easiest to organise. But I think it tends to lead to fairly lifeless, soulless games, particularly when the games are more open like ours," Garbut told Eurogamer.

"We are a lot more organic, this is a conscious choice and it does lead to more difficulties along the way, it's harder on the team and it's trickier to keep track of but it leads to better games.

"It works because the core team know each other well and have worked together for a long time, we trust each other and know what to expect. Our whole ethos is to try things out, play with them, find what works best and move in that direction."

Elsewhere in the interview, we find out how Rockstar goes about making up fictional brands like Cluckin' Bell.

For the most part it's as you would expect - a well-organised design department - but occasionally it does come down to round-robin emails seeking inspiration. "Every so often an email will be sent out looking for ideas for businesses or slogans, which always ends up degenerating into pictures of cats and diarrhoea for some reason," said Garbut. "But ideas come from all those places."

All part of the massive development effort that goes into a GTA game. As Garbut put it, "It's all a big scary tangled web. But it works." See how well it works when the game comes out on 29th April, and check out part two of our interview for more. ...

Infinity Ward has revealed that the Variety Map Pack for Call of Duty 4 on PS3 will be available worldwide this Thursday

It's a week earlier than expected, and sees the double experience weekend move foward to begin this Friday.

The Variety Map Pack will cost USD 9.99 (GBP 5 - assuming it isn't altered for our region), which is a little cheaper than the Xbox 360 version at 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).

Inside the bundle are four maps: Broadcast, Killhouse, Creek and Chinatown. We liked the latter two when we got to grips with it recently. ...

We Love Golf developer Camelot has said that it is working on RPG ideas and hasn't ruled out a Golden Sun game for DS.

"It would be great, wouldn't it!" Hiroyuki and Shugo Takahashi told Eurogamer when we played golf with them recently.

"We want to play that game too, just as much as you. We love Golden Sun!

"We are working on a lot of different things - a lot of different design documents and so on, including some different RPG ideas. Don't worry, we're thinking about RPG stuff!"

However, for the moment shipping the European version of We Love Golf, featuring online play, is the focus, and as Camelot is a single-team developer it's very much a case of "we'll see what happens".

But for those who remember the two GBA Golden Sun games - random-battlers with interesting upgrade systems built around magical creatures called Djinn - the brothers have some reassuring words:

"Camelot is an RPG maker. We don't think that we'll ever quit making RPGs."

Good then. They're also much better at We Love Golf than we are, so check out our We Love Golf interview for more on how that game's shaping up, including some photographs of the Takahashis punishing Eurogamer's Rob Fahey for not replacing divots. ...

Mario Kart has held onto the top spot in the UK All Formats Chart for a second week running.

Its ghost was chased eagerly by the legs of Mario & Sonic at the Olympics at two, and the shiny tyres of Gran Turismo 5: Prologue at three.

Sporty pair Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 and SEGA Superstars Tennis followed at four and five respectively, with shooters Rainbow Six Vegas 2 and Call of Duty 4 next in line.

Fresh entry UEFA Euro 2008 managed to take eight - probably feeling the sales-glut from England not qualifying for the competition.

Dr. Kawashima climbed back into the charts with Brain Training at nine, while Guitar Hero III and its frustrating final set-list rounded off the pile at 10.

New entries of note were Time Crisis 4 and its PS3 light-gun at 24, plus another forgettable Sims 2 expansion to do with kitchens and bathrooms at 20.

Big movers were Rayman Raving Rabbids up from 32 to 22, while Dark Sector fell from 13 to 26 and Viking: Battle for Asgard tumbled from 16 to 29.

Those fired from the list by the stubby finger of Sir Alan "Charts" Sugar were Bully: Scholarship Edition and MX vs. ATV Untamed.
