Geolocation media specialist BIA/Kelsey says search on the mobile platform will exceed search on PCs by 27 billion queries per year.
It adds that mobile search revenues are set to grow at a CAGR of 160.4 per cent to $3.2 billion in 2016, up from $400 million last year.
However, desktop local search revenues will grow from $5.7 billion to $10.2 billion, a CAGR of 12 per cent.
Michael Boland, senior analyst and program director, Mobile Local Media, BIA/Kelsey, said: "It's important to note that while mobile local search volume will exceed its desktop equivalent, ad dollars will remain lower.
"This is because advertisers aren't yet keeping pace with the growth of mobile local ad inventory, but we expect that to evolve."

While the PS3's media abilities in the US are limited to what it can access via discs or over the network, in Europe / Australia (PlayTV) and Japan (Torne) TV tuners stretch things further. Now, Sony Japan has followed those up with the Nasne headless media box shown above. A combination networked recorder and media storage device with a 500GB SATA HDD and tuners for both antenna and satellite TV built-in, it pulls in broadcasts and either records it or streams to up to two other Sony products (Vita, PS3 with Torne app, Vaio PC, Sony Tablet or Xperia phone) on the same home network at once. It will also support streaming of stored media via DLNA, once its software is updated to version 1.5. The capabilities of the Nasne vary depending on the hardware it's used with: PS3 users can connect up to four of the devices to one console, however it can also export video files formatted for offline viewing on the Vita or transfer recorded files to PCs for Blu-ray archival.
Is this a promising example of the "One Sony" synergy Kaz so recently promised? We'll have to wait until the Nasne ships July 19th for 16,980 yen ($211) to find out for sure. Sadly, like the Torne (which will receive its own 4.0 software update this summer) and Blu-ray recorders that came before it's unlikely we'll ever this one in the US, but that won't stop us from dreaming. A press release with full specs follows after the break, check out Engadget Japan for a few more pictures.

Any geek worth his / her salt knows that techdom's territory-spanning intellectual property spats are far from over, so we don't begrudge heavyweights like Nintendo for endeavoring to bulk up their litigious arsenal. Filed back in October of 2003 and just recently granted by the USPTO, is patent number 8,157,654 that gives the Big N ownership of a method to emulate video game consoles bearing built-in displays (think: handhelds) and accompanying software on external computing devices. What does that mean in plain 'ol English, dear gaming fanatic? Well, it could presage a device agnostic service that would break the company's vast backlog of handheld titles out of its walled garden and into the vast consumer wild. Or it could just be another legal armament poised for deployment should the sue-happy titans of the electronics industry come a-calling. Either way, the house that Mario built's got another IP bullet locked and loaded.

Paid-for Xbox Live games and content are enjoying “good growth” in the UK year-on-year, says Microsoft.
In an interview with MCV, Xbox Live’s UK product manager Pav Bhardwaj said this includes Arcade releases, Games on Demand titles and extra add-on content.
“We don’t have any particular numbers as such, but we’ve seen good growth with the arcade titles, and the game add-on business is in growth as well,” he told MCV.
“We’re really pleased with how it’s going. We’re bringing new titles out constantly. We brought out a number of titles a few weeks ago, and now we have Trials Evolution, Minecraft, Bloodforge and Fable Heroes. It’s a new set of amazing IP and some amazing games.”
Sales of Microsoft’s Games on Demand titles, which become available to download online around six months after their retail debut, are also up year-on-year. These are fully priced at around £49.99 each.
“It really is a successful part of our business, we’re very pleased with the growth of Games on Demand and it continues to do really well,” added Bhardwaj. “People are buying the games at full price and downloading them all too.
“Both sides of Microsoft Studios – retail and the Xbox Live marketplace – have been growing year-on-year.”
Microsoft is currently pushing its Arcade Next promotion which consists of four games: Trials Evolution, Fable Heroes, Bloodforge and Minecraft.
“While we wouldn’t talk about specific sales targets, we’re really excited to launch such a strong line-up of titles as part of the Arcade Next promotion,” said Bhardwaj. “With highly recognised IP in Trials, Fable and Minecraft, and a heart-pounding combat experience in Bloodforge, we have high hopes for these titles.
“Specifically, we’ve got big hopes for Minecraft on the Xbox. It does look incredible, it has split-screen multiplayer and is very very true to the PC experience. And then we’re bringing Kinect functionality as well in the future.”

YouTube is looking to hire next-gen game console programmers in an effort to ‘build the next generation game-console-based TV experience.’
The mantra is also the first responsibility for the role under the position’s description on Google Jobs (spotted by IGN).
YouTube currently has an app on Xbox 360, but with the opening’s experience requiring ‘deep technical knowledge of Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony PlayStation 3 and/or Nintendo Wii’ it appears they’re looking to move beyond just a single platform.
Other responsibilities for the position include:

    • Deliver a compelling lean back experience with monetization and e-commerce offerings (ie, pay-per-stream, ads),
    • Integrate and optimize with distribution channels and devices including all major game platforms.
    • Develop leading edge User Interfaces and delight users with innovative media rich solutions.

No official announcements from any of the key players (outside the already released 360 YouTube app) have surfaced as of yet.
