Just last week, we reported the unveiling of Samsung's dual-core powered Galaxy Tab 2 devices, with 10.1-inch and seven-inch options in the works.
Now, a 'Samsung insider' claims the firm has stopped production of the 10.1-inch model in order to upgrade its dual-core processor to a quad-core version, according to netbooknews.
However, chip specifics are unknown, while it's thought that America may not get the power upgrade, simply receiving the dual-core option as originally planned.
Seemingly, the seven-inch version will retain its original dual-core processor. This is presumably so that Samsung can still retail the device at $249.99 to cover the low end tablet market, a space that the firm still doesn't have any traction in.

In recognition of the huge influence the ZX SPECTRUM computer has had on an entire generation in the creative and scientific fields, in the UK and beyond, SCI-FI-LONDON (The London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film) will honour Clive Sinclair’s invention in a light-hearted ceremony on Saturday, MAY 5TH, 2012 at 12noon at London’s BFI Southbank.

The birthday cake (baked to a bespoke recipe by Gordon Ramsey’s former pastry chef, Beth Watts) will be presented as part of HORIZONS: A CELEBRATION OF THE 30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ZX SPECTRUM, the festival’s weekend-long FREE event, at the BFI South Bank.

The little machine that plugged into the living room telly will be honoured in a rich blend of fun, memories, and future-gazing. Visitors who were there the first time round will be able to play some of their favourite games and share their memories, whilst the generation who are only just beginning to scratch the surface behind their software can road-test the new RASPBERRY PI. These innovative new computers are currently like gold-dust as demand has far exceeded supply. They are credit-card sized computers which also plug into your TV and a keyboard. The inventors want to see them being used by children all over the world to learn programming – a very hot topic of educational debate currently.

Speakers and performers over the two days, include: Dylan Smith: demonstrating the amazing Spectrum-to-Twitter client Saul Metzstein: director of BBC film Micro Men discusses his influences from the golden age of 80s computing Matt Westcott: running the Chiptune music workshop – how to make music with the Spectrum Dr Bill Marshall of RS Components demonstrates the workings of the Raspberry PI. Matthew C. Applegate: the musician, teacher, and author on how the Spectrum gave birth to a generation of programmers MJ Hibbett: performing Hey Hey 16k and other evocative songs!

Louis Savy, Festival Director for SCI-FI-LONDON says:

“As well as screening great science fiction, we are also serious about promoting science fact. Where one meets the other is where all the fun happens. The 30th birthday of the ZX Spectrum gives us an opportunity to promote the best in computing innovation today as well as celebrating the halcyon days of Sir Clive’s ground-breaking machine. We hope people will enter into the spirit of the weekend and come along to the BFI to play. We’re hoping the next little Sinclair will find her way to the Southbank and have a go on a Raspberry Pi.”

Paul Squires, for Imperica, producers of the events says: “We're delighted to be working with SCI-FI-LONDON and the BFI on this celebration of one of the greatest machines – and greatest eras – of British computing. It helped to form and shape the career of many of the UK's creative and technical leaders, and continues to enjoy a lively, vibrant 'retrogaming' scene. With the Raspberry Pi, it's great to see this 'homebrew' culture coming back. Horizons is very much a celebration of the Spectrum and what it gave to us, and given that the event is free, we are looking forward to a well-attended and enjoyable two days.” ...

Hey guys. I just thought I'd drop by to show you a new iPhone app I've just released. It's a small pick up and play style outing, offering quick 2-minute games to help you kill the time when you're bored. It took me about a month or so to produce, and was created using Adobe AIR for iOS. I would really appreciate it if you could take a look and let me know what you think.

The app is available here. (Oh, and it's free.)

As I said before, I'd be very grateful of any feedback you have to offer, particularly because this is my first release. Also, in case you're interested, my best score is 52. I'm not sure if anyone's beat that yet. Good luck with that one.

I hope you enjoy it! Kind regards,

Scientists, engineers and software developers are always looking for innovative ways to accelerate applications and shorten computational cycles. SoftLayer is looking to help them out by offering a new HPC cloud-based solution consisting of dedicated servers leveraging the latest GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) cards from Nvidia.

SoftLayer’s new offering provides an on-demand, consumptive billing model for High-Performance Computing (HPC) users looking to meet the most compute intensive environments. These environments include traditional HPC fields such as data mining, numerical and seismic analysis as well advertising agencies and web design shops looking to develop interactive games, applications and 3D content.

“Using GPUs for running applications is an emerging trend in HPC today. Computing requirements continue to skyrocket but users remain as demanding as ever. They want capacity on-demand and prefer to pay only for what they use. It is incumbent on hosters to deliver this capacity in a cloud-like fashion if they want to break into this market,” said Philbert Shih, Managing Director, Structure Research Ltd. “Giving people the ability to scale GPU resources adds incredible flexibility in the way research, engineering and development projects are conducted. By putting such raw computational power into a user’s hands, in an easy pay as you go model, the focus is on research results not acquiring or maintaining the latest technology.”

SoftLayer’s new HPC hosting solution consists of dual-processor Intel E5-2600 (Sandy Bridge) based servers supporting one or two Nvidia Tesla M2090 GPUs. GPUs work in conjunction with the server’s CPU to accelerate application and processing performance. The GPU will offload compute intensive portions of the application from the CPU to accelerate overall performance of the machine, dramatically boosting application performance by running in tandem with the CPU. As a result, SoftLayer users will see a massive performance boost and HPC applications accelerated by as much as ten times.

“We are offering breakthrough performance in a unique delivery model,” said Duke Skarda, Chief Technology Officer of SoftLayer. “The beauty of this solution is the way users can break down to toughest computational problems and largest blocks of data to work them in parallel over our network driving quicker results. GPU technology is still in its infancy but customer demand continues to soar as more and more HPC applications get migrated over to cloud infrastructures.”

“Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) providers like SoftLayer are pushing the technological envelope by making the latest technology accessible and scalable through a cloud offering,” said Sumit Gupta, General Manager of Tesla HPC at Nvidia. “This technology is all about performance without compromise and we found a partner in SoftLayer committed to enabling cloud computing services that enable GPU computing from anywhere around the world.”

    Key features and benefits:

    • Cost effective HPC (ideal for scientific and technical computing)
    • Massive compute performance increase while accelerating application speeds by up to 10x
    • Cluster management and GPU monitoring
    • Parallel compute environment operates invisibly to the user
    • GPUs specifically designed to work as computational accelerators

ReignDesign, a leading iPad developer in China, has revealed the difficulty they found obtaining a new iPad for testing their upcoming puzzle game, "Flockwork." Apple announced the new iPad with Retina display on March 7th, but the new device is not yet available in China. That meant developers in China have had to go to extreme lengths to import devices to use for testing.

Stephen Ceresia from ReignDesign explained: "Unlike other regions, Apple doesn't launch its products in China right away, so we are often forced to purchase devices from other regions. Unfortunately, with every major product launch it's becoming increasingly difficult to get our hands on new iOS devices when they're released. With the first iPad, we picked one up from one of the city's many grey-market electronics stores almost immediately after launch. With the iPad 2 we couldn't find anything local, so we went to Hong Kong," Ceresia says.

However, recent changes to Apple Retail Store policy in Hong Kong requiring pre-orders and proof-of-residency have made things more difficult. With the recent release of the new iPad, the company was forced to purchase the device through an independent US courier shortly after its launch.

Until Apple's China product launch dates coincide with those of other major regions, most iPad developers in China are left with few options: submit an untested app, wait weeks or even months for an official product release, or find a grey-market product to test with.

"The new iPad's retina display is a significant update, and we didn't want to submit Flockwork without first testing it on an actual device. It was a hassle to get our hands on one, but we think it was definitely worth it to fully support the new device," Ceresia explains. The company's game Flockwork is scheduled for a worldwide release on April 19th on the iTunes App Store.
