After chaos broke out in the games industry yesterday, high-street catalogue retailer Argos has said an administrative error was to blame for putting Halo 3 on sale a week before its official launch.

A statement submitted to MCV read: "Argos would like to make it clear that it does not endorse breaking street dates and continues to be committed to preventing pre-release sales through its stores and website.

"However, we are aware that a genuine administrative error has resulted in a small number of cases where Halo 3 has already been sold.

"We are currently ensuring that there are no further sales of this product in-store until the official release date, Wednesday, September 26. We have already taken steps to ensure that Halo 3 is unavailable on the Argos website for reservation or purchase until the correct date.

"We accept that this incident falls short of the usual high standards we aim to achieve and operate within and we will be taking steps to ensure this doesn’t happen in the future.” ...

PRESS RELEASE: DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller With Rumble Feature To be Introduced For PLAYSTATION®3

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) Sony today announced that it would release DUALSHOCK®3 Wireless Controller, a new controller for PLAYSTATION®3 (PS3™) incorporating a rumble feature, in Japan in November as a separately sold accessory. It inherits the basic design and functionality of the popular PlayStation® controller, while keeping the high-precision, high response motion sensitive six-axis sensing system. Introduction to North American and European markets is expected in spring 2008.

The added rumble feature, combined with the highly realistic motion sensitive six-axis sensing system, takes gamers deeper into the world of interactivity, delivering a more intuitive, realistic and immersive game play experience. The new controller will also benefit PS3 content creators, by giving them the ability to further expand their creative imagination. PS3 titles that are already in the market may become compatible with the rumble feature through software update.

With DUALSHOCK 3 and the attractive lineup of PS3 titles incorporating the rumble feature, SCEI will introduce more new ways of enjoyment that can only be found on PS3, and will further redefine the world of entertainment.

now im not totally anti sony, i own a psp a ps2 and a ps1 and some of their other stuff, but this was inevitable rly.

Kaz Hirai's opening keynote for Tokyo Game Show featured plenty of announcements, but one that should interest PSP owners is that Sony has announced a version of the PlayStation Store accessible by PCs. The store is now live for Japanese gamers, featuring downloads like original PlayStation One games for the PSP, bypassing the need for a PLAYSTATION 3 with which to download content.

While the PlayStation Store is already live in Japan, it's restricted to that region only, so navigating it will be a challenge or impossibility for those in Europe and North America.

Award winning developer of million-seller MotorStorm strengthens SCE Worldwide Studios network.

Sony Computer Entertainment today announced that it had acquired leading game developer Evolution Studios Ltd and its subsidiary Bigbig Studios Ltd to further expand its game development capability as part of Sony Computer Entertainment's Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS).

In a strategic move to secure excellence in game development for current and future PlayStation platforms, the acquisition of Evolution and Bigbig formalizes the successful and long established exclusive relationship between Sony Computer Entertainment and the two studios.

Evolution Studios, based in Runcorn, England is the award-winning developer of MotorStorm, the million-selling #1 hit title for PLAYSTATION 3(PS3). Since its establishment in 1999, SCE has enjoyed a highly productive and commercially successful relationship with Evolution -- a studio with an unrivalled track-record for quality and productivity, having shipped a title every year for 6 straight years. Evolution established its reputation as the successful developer of the World Rally Championship series on PlayStation2, also published by SCE. The studio is currently working on the next installment of the Motorstorm franchise for PS3, scheduled for release in 2008 on Blu-ray Disc, along with content expansions for the original MotorStorm to be distributed via PLAYSTATION Network.

Bigbig Studios, based in Leamington Spa, England was founded in 2001 with backing from Evolution Studios and SCE and is the developer of the Pursuit Force game for PSP (PlayStation Portable), which has sold over 800,000 copies worldwide. The studio is currently working on the second title in the series, Pursuit Force: Extreme Justice, which will be available in October this year for PSP and on PlayStation 2 early in 2008.

"Our strategy is to create the best games by working with the best talent and Evolution and Bigbig are world-class additions to our team," said Phil Harrison, President of SCE Worldwide Studios. "The incredible people in these studios further extend the depth and skill of the industry's largest platform-exclusive development resource".

Following the acquisition, Mick Hocking, Managing Director of Evolution Studios, will also be appointed Group Studio Director for the three Studios; SCE WWS Liverpool Studio, Evolution and Bigbig, reporting directly to SCE WWS Vice President, Michael Denny.

Studios across the WWS network share technology, production methodology and creative goals to build the best possible experiences for users to enjoy the most from the PlayStation family of hardware platforms and network services. With over 2,500 employees, SCE Worldwide Studios combines the talents of 15 game development studios in Japan, the USA, the UK and The
    Netherlands.

    Squall joins the fight.

Square-Enix's upcoming fighting game includes some big names in the Final Fantasy Universe. You'll get to control the likes of Zidane, Kuja, Sephiroth, and Garland. During a TGS 2007 trailer at Square-Enix's booth, they revealed Squall will also be added to the mix. Little else was shown of the game, save for a few CG sequences featuring an angry-looking Sephiroth, and a few brief snippets of gameplay.

No release date was given, as the trailer labeled the game a "work in progress." More as we hear it.
