    via IGN,

Although the summer months are generally regarded as a barren time for releases, this year there doesn't seem to be the typical drought of new titles. Of course, the games coming out may not be the juggernauts of 2007, but at least shops have something to shove on their shelves each week.

Onto this week's releases and, being the kind-hearted gentlemen that we are here at IGN, we'll let ladies go first and take a look at Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which is released on PC and PS2. If you haven't been following the progress of this game, it's a revamped version of the original Tomb Raider that uses the Legends engine. We thoroughly enjoyed the PS2 edition, scoring it 8.7 and saying: "Anniversary sticks to what it does best and ends up outdoing every Lara game that's been made since. Lara is back on great form, and re-imagining a ten-year-old classic has clearly been a risk worth taking."

Next up is Shadowrun on both PC and Xbox 360. There's been a lot of hoo-hah around this game because it's the first to let 360 owners and PC owners blast each other in the face over Xbox Live. Unfortunately we've yet to review either game but from what we've played on the 360 it seems like a fairly stripped-down arena-based FPS with a rudimentary single-player and some magic spells thrown in for good measure.

Talking of magic, also released this week is Meteos: Disney Magic on DS. It's an updated version of the DS block-swapping puzzling classic but with Disney characters instead of the charming dancing aliens from the original. Despite the likes of Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh making an appearance, we actually enjoyed it, scoring it an 'impressive' 8.0 and concluding that "if Disney put this version online we would have scored it higher, but we're keeping an open mind here: Meteos: Disney Magic does a really good job moving the design forward".

Also out today on DS is Wario: Master of Disguise. Unlike Wario's recent ventures into the mini-game genre with the enjoyable WarioWare series, Master of Disguise is a more traditional platformer that uses the touch screen to execute a range of special powers. Disappointingly this return to Wario's roots wasn't very enjoyable, scoring only a 'passable' 6.0 from IGN US and leaving us to complain that "the implementation of the touch screen elements are so amateurish with concepts that wouldn't have flown in the early part of the Nintendo DS system's life cycle". Oh dear.

Also out this week is Smash Court Tennis 3 on PSP - just in case you like the idea of having Maria Sharapova in your pocket. Anyway, that's it for now and we'll see you next week for a look at Forza Motorsport 2 on Xbox 360 and Pangya! Golf With Style on Wii.

    via IGN,

Today Agetec announced it will release the music game Rhythm 'n Notes this fall. The title aims to actually improve players' rhythmic and tonal skills with games based on piano and drums. In typical game announcement fashion, Agetec says Rhythm 'n Notes will appeal to all musical tastes.

Divided into a variety of lessons, the note exercises task players with identifying notes and chords. Rhythmic activities test your ability to keep time in a range of signatures and patterns. Don't have any rhythm? Tone deaf? A practice mode will let you get familiar with notes, chords, and meters by both name and sound.

    She bangs the drum.

"Educational games that are truly fun are hard to come by," said Mark Johnson, Producer at Agetec. "Rhythm 'n Notes gets it right with addictive, enriching play."

Drumming exercises will utilize the stylus to tap the touch screen in time with the beat. Rhythm 'n Notes even delves into the fundamentals of music composition.

This will be the first music game for Agetec, whose other upcoming Nintendo DS titles include the remake of Cookie & Cream and Brain Buster Puzzle Pack.

    via IGN,

Today newly-formed developer Renegade Kid announced it has partnered with Gamecock to release its first game, Dementium: The Ward. Kid calls Dementium a "next-generation" handheld title that combines action/adventure, survival horror, and first-person shooters. The game sports 3D visuals that apparently push the DS to its technical limits and is being aimed at mature gamers.

"Renegade Kid is looking to move above and beyond what most games are attempting on the DS, and with Gamecock we've found a publisher who is supportive, developer friendly, and willing to give us the freedom to create the game we want," said Jools Watsham, Owner and Creative Director of Renegade Kid. "Dementium showcases what a powerful piece of hardware the DS is, while drawing in a mature crowd that's looking for a title they can really sink their teeth into."

It's what's on the inside that counts.
"From the first meeting, Renegade Kid have proven themselves to be innovative, unafraid to push the 'norms' of gaming and incredibly talented -- all of which we think are the key characteristics of a great developer," said Harry Miller, Head of Development at Gamecock. "It's great when you can sit down with a developer who shares the same vision of where games should be going in creating new and exciting titles to offer an alternative to the bland remakes and sequels flooding stores today."

In Dementium, players awake in a seemingly abandoned insane asylum. Soon they encounter grotesque surgical experiments gone awry wandering the halls and other mysterious inhabitants. Players must solve puzzles and escape the hospital with their lives. Renegade Kid promises gory visuals will be the icing on the cake for older gamers.

A week after Activision's announcement that Guitar Hero 3 would be coming to Wii, Activision released the results of their past fiscal year. Gamasutra reports that Activision's sales rose to $1.51 billion from $1.47 billion the previous year, and they expect to see another rise this year to $1.8 billion.

Yesterday, Activision held a conference call to their investors. Company officials seemed extremely satisfied with the performance of Guitar Hero, saying they were only getting started and making note of consumers' "insatiable appetite for songs." They are especially happy with how well their downloadable songs have sold—almost $10 million in profit—and they expect those sales numbers to double this year.

According to Activision's expectations, the hardware sales of the PS2 and PS3 will both grow by 4 million units, the Xbox 360 and Wii by 5 million each, and the GBA, DS, and PSP by a combined total of 11-12 million. They expect the software market to grow by 12%, thanks to the expanding userbase this generation.

When asked specifically about Wii, Activision seemed hopeful for the future of third-party software. They said that for the past two console generations, Nintendo's hardware has been intimidating to third parties thanks to the idea that first party games are always better. Now that the Wii is doing so well, Activision is reinvesting in the system. Guitar Hero 3 will be the first product for the Wii that truly "leverages the physical interface," they said. ...

I just love the way news comes out, normally in a fashion where you’re speaking to a movie or games developer and they let something slip in a conversation (I am sure this is on purpose mostly).

The games division head at LucasArts has let some news slip about the making of a Star Wars Light Saber Wii Game, he said “a Wii game that lets players wield virtual light sabers is on the horizon”.

Now that just had to happen on the Nintendo Wii, Star Wars is such a big franchise and with the Wii’s unique controller it makes an idea solution for the Light Saber.

What would be cool are lightsaber sound effects coming from the Wii-mote’s speaker that would be an added bonus.
No word on dates yet, but we will let you know unless you leave a comment first. ...

It seems that Microsoft can’t catch a break these days what with Vista still failing miserably and apparently so are XBOX 360’s. Now don’t get me wrong, I own a XBOX 360 and I’ve had it for about a year with ZERO issues. There are those XBOX 360 owners that are perfectly happy (like me) and there are others who have gone through five or six units and even then all their issues are not fixed. We’ve talked about that before. And now, the Netherlands and the European Commissioner for Consumer affairs wants answers and wants them now.

I don’t know how widespread the problems mentioned in the US or other markets are but it seems the European market is having a problem with broken hard drives and scratched DVDs. The DVD scratching problem occurred briefly here in the US. Now this may be going out on a limb but could it be that Microsoft has pawned the flawed consoles off on other markets while at the same time fixing some of the issues in the US market?

There are upwards of 1,000 complaints from the Netherlands alone which is going up every day. The commissioner not only wants answers from Microsoft Europe but from other markets as well and a bulleted list of all issues and problems known in those markets.

Unfortunately for the commissioner she cannot order a forced recall on the XBOX 360 and I’m no expert on European laws or the Netherlands for that matter but surely if this is the case, something can be done besides going through broken XBOX 360 after broken XBOX 360.

    The Inquirer
found a mostly English interview with the commissioner which can be heard right here. ...

Nintendo’s image of Homebrewers is this: Software Pirates. Even when a lot of us are not pirates. We need to let them rethink their image of us. We need to put an end to software piracy! Sure, most flashcarts are made to play romz and if you took those devices away we would have really only three ways to play homebrew. We need to ask the companies to stop supporting piracy. So far the only one close to stopping support piracy is SuperCard as they ask to ‘Only play Freeware & Personal Backups’. That is not enough though. Nintendo will just keep building up security to prevent roms from being played. This will also prevent good wholesome Homebrew. Homebrewers should not be punished for criminal’s mistakes. Just like people are not

punished if someone around them commits a crime. Something must be done about this or homebrew could end up being a thing of the past.

HMV has said that the PS3 is meeting sales targets, according to a recent story over at gamesindustry.biz. HMV Head of Games Tim Ellis stated that "Sales remain in line with expectations, occasionally even exceeding them.”

"We're looking forward to further games releases, and when the time's right, a suitable price revision to take the console to its next level of sales.” Apparently all three next-gen consoles have been selling well, with Ellis stating that "From a retail and customer perspective it's great to have three games heavyweights relatively matched and vying for market domination. This creative tension is leading to fantastic innovative technology and brilliant games."

Even if sales of the PS3 are going OK in the UK, they've been less than stellar elsewhere. The PS3’s high price point is definitely off-putting to some. Sony may be planning to support the PS3 for a while, but high sales of the console now will help the PS3 to secure some more of those elusive exclusives. ...
