Apparantly a Minnesota radio host announced over the radio that if parents were willing to turn their children over to the station for 24 hours, they would give them a new PS3. They got more than they bargained for:

"We got more calls than we could handle," said Dave Ryan, "They were lined up willing to turn their kids over to strangers for a freakin' PlayStation."

Children offered included a one week and two day old baby. One caller named Katie attempted to get a PS3 by offering her 1 month old up for a 3 day period. When informed it was a hoax, she responded in disbelief.

Dave Ryan went onto say in an article,"But I didn't want them to feel too badly. I said, 'Listen you're not the only one who fell for this'. But at the same time, think about it, these are your kids, these are the most precious responsibility you'll ever have in your entire life. Be careful with your babies.' "

Sorry to disappoint gamers who planned on importing Japanese games to play on their consoles, but Nintendo's Wii is definitely region locked. It's not enough to just take our word for it, so here's a video of a guy trying out a US Zelda game in his Japanese machine. We haven't seen choking this bad since Buckner.

More Wii news this time from Gamespot:

For Brits who didn't manage to pre-order a Wii, Nintendo's next-gen console, there is still hope--many stores have a percentage of their stock put aside for those willing to wait in line. However, the numbers of consoles available are rumoured to be low, meaning that many will likely go home empty handed.

The Wii is to be released in Europe tomorrow, December 8, and some stores will be open to sell the console at the stroke of midnight. Some fans, eager for units, have been camping out on Oxford Street in London's premier shopping area since December 5.

This will be the first European console launch for over a year, when the Xbox 360 was released, and with Sony's PlayStation 3 delayed until March, the Wii is bound to be on many a shopper's Christmas list.

In an e-mail to customers who had pre-ordered the Wii, Woolworths commented, "Nintendo has only shipped part of its promised stock for Nintendo Wii to all retailers within the UK." The message went on to reassure people that they would, however, receive deliveries of their pre-ordered console before Christmas.

Nintendo has promised a "steady stream" of Wii replenishment in the run up to Christmas, with plans to ship 4 million consoles worldwide, but also advised people to pre-order to avoid disappointment. Pre-orders on Amazon UK closed after just ten minutes, and orders for other retailers also sold out fast.

The official Nintendo launch event will take place at the HMV branch at 150 Oxford Street, London, and starts at 11 p.m tonight. Those waiting for a Wii there will have the chance to play Wii Sports against celebrities including ex-Arsenal and England footballer Ian Wright, model and presenter Nell McAndrew, ex-Wimbledon champion Pat Cash, and boxer Ricky Hatton. Nintendo UK general manager David Yarnton will also be present.

There will one other event in London, at Game's Oxford Street branch. It will kick off at around 10 p.m. Music, entertainment, competitions and Wii pods to play on are planned. At midnight, there will be a countdown. Company reps told GameSpot that there will be extra consoles allocated for those waiting in line, as well as enough consoles to fulfill all pre-orders.

Game's Dawson Street, Dublin branch will also be open this evening.

Gamestation will be holding events at its Birmingham New Street and Edinburgh branches this evening--parties kick off at 10 p.m. with DJs spinning tracks, models serving food, and a "guest appearance" from Mario.

Over 200 other Gamestation locations across the country will be open at midnight for customers to buy the console. The company advises consumers to call individual stores for details. Some branches will have extra stock as well as those allocated for pre-orders.

Woolworths, Currys, Toys "R" Us, and PC World have all confirmed that their stores won't be opening at midnight. A spokesperson for Currys said, "We have no specific plans for extra promotion of the launch as there's so much excitement around the Wii already." Virgin has cancelled an event that it had planned for its Oxford Street branch.

The weather in London, which could dampen spirits considerably, can only be described as inclement, with heavy rain and strong winds. In Kensal Rise in North West London this morning, six people were hurt after a tornado ripped off rooftops, smashed windows, and ripped trees out of the ground. The forecast for the evening, according to the Met Office, is "severe gales." Severe weather warnings have been issued. ...

A modified version of DarwiinRemote with IR-based mouse movement by ian rickard, heres the details:

The big deal about this version is the IR-sensor based mouse movement. For synching, I found the synch button to be much more reliable than pressing 1 and 2 (which I actually never got to work). Still kinda buggy with the setup but once it's working it works good. If you have problems getting mouse mode to work, try turning the IR sensor off and on a few times and make sure you're pointing at a strong enough pair of IR sources AND you're far enough away from them (but not too far - 5 to 10 times the distance between them should work good). I worked a little bit on the random crashes, but couldn't come up with much. At least it shouldn't crash when it quits now. General rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, quit it and re-open it.

Heres More info abou this release:

DarwiinRemote is a tiny piece of software which reads data from and sends data to Nintendo Wii Remote. It detects all 3 axis sensors, all buttons (except power). You can modify which controller LED indicator is on, and send force feedback. Right now it only supports a basic front row control scheme.

A senior examiner for the British Board of Film Classification has defended the organisation's decision to award Canis Canem Edit a 15 certificate.

"You can understand the concerns of a subject that hits the headlines fairly frequently in this country. Often the truth is far less dramatic than the myth that's put around it," Gianni Zamo told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz in an interview due to be published next week.

Canis Canem Edit is the PS2 game better known to most people by its US title Bully. It's been subjected to a lot of criticism by anti-bullying campaigners in the UK, with MP Keith Vaz also hopping on the bandwagon recently.

But Zamo reckons that developer/publisher Rockstar took a relatively considered approach - something largely reflected by very positive reviews.

"It's not just a free-for-all, go out and kick the living daylights out of everybody [game]," Zamo pointed out. "There are penalties for engaging in anti-social behaviour, so I think Rockstar have been careful to balance it out in that respect."

Nintendo is working on ways to try and help people not accidentally lob their Wii remote controls into expensive objects/other people's faces.

"Some people are getting a lot more excited than we'd expected," president Satoru Iwata told the Foreign Correspondents Club this week.

"We need to better communicate to people how to deal with Wii as a new form of entertainment."

The Wii remote has so far gone down very well in the US and Japan, but problems tend to arise thanks to the relatively flimsy strap used to fasten it to the player's wrist.

That and the fact that some people are just complete mentalists.

And so as Nintendo investigate, others mourn, and for some reason I still end up twirling mine around haphazardly, in much the same way I once broke my SingStar microphones. Oh well.

Nintendo Wii is due out tomorrow, 8th December, in Europe.

    NEW IN v0.4
    -----------
    - GPSFS format support. Map tiles are stored in a custom format for much faster transfer and access rate.
Zip support for maps is discontinued (since it was too slow for large maps)
    - Added logic for low baud GPS devices (by Zero Altitude). To activate put SLOW_GPS=1 in config.txt
    - Straight and path distance calculation in map mode
    - Ability to add POI. ([X] in Map Mode)
    - POI search / display. ([O] from Attraction selector screen). List the names of up to 100 closest
points of interest, which match your search criteria together with distances from current location
    - Variable read-speed for "GPS from file" mode (FAKEFEED=1). While re-playing your pre-recorded GPS data,
press [X] to toggle re-play speed between x1,x3,x5,x7 speeds
    - Last position recall. The application memorizes the latest position and zoom settings for each map.
    - Improved map rotation logic for TRACK-UP mode. Use TURNSPEED variable in config.txt to specify the minimum
speed at which screen rotation takes place. This allows to reduce screen rotation due to deviation in
GPS coordinates while the device is not moving or moving slowly.
    - Google maps version updated to most recent in WIFI download mode.
    - "No UMD" bug is fixed. GPS read functionality does not depend on UMD in drive, wifi switch or

    - Improved and hopefully mode informative help screen ([START] button)
    - New (faster) garbage collection logic (old logic used to crash application on large maps)
    - More accurate distance calculation in GPS mode.
    - Code cleanup (source code attached)
    - New version of Windows Map Download Tool by in7ane (GPSFS conversion/support, new map vendors and much more)

While some folks just can't make up their mind, and other have already leaned one way or the other, a recent independent survey points to Sony's format being the one losing ground and interest, but we can't say we're surprised. Betamax, ATRAC, MiniDisc, and UMDs were all crafted by Sony, and all fell (basically) flat before ever really catching on, and it seems the costly Blu-ray format may be headed for the same fate. Cymfony, a market influence analytics company, found that "positive discussions" about HD DVD were "46-percent higher" than talks about Blu-ray, with over twice as many post authors being "impressed with HD DVD" rather than "impressed with Blu-ray." A good deal of the negativity shown towards Blu-ray was attributed to Sony's "heavy handed" approach of forcing Blu-ray upon PlayStation 3 owners, not to mention the notoriously delayed (and pricey) standalone players. Although it's still far too early to tell which format will rise victorious (you know, since peace talks have all but ceased), there's no denying the high costs associated with both next-generation discs, but Sony's track record with these proprietary ideas definitely doesn't bode well for it.

At the rate all this Wiimote hacking is going, it looks like Nintendo's soon going to have more than just Wii users to contend with in its attempts to keep the darn things in stock, with this latest development sure to attract more than few curious PC users. The big advance here is support for the Wii's sensor bar (or candles, we suppose), which'll give you far greater control than previous Wiimote-only hacks have allowed, actually making it a decent alternative to a mouse for some tasks. Still skeptical? Check out the vid here --> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp1_pZ-AteA&eurl=
