Burst.com, the same company that sued Microsoft in 2002 and to which Redmond paid a $60 million license fee in 2005, claims Apple infringes upon several of its patents relating to music and video downloading. As such, it recently demanded that the U.S. District Court in San Francisco shut down a range of Apple services, including iTunes, Quicktime streaming and sales of the company’s flagship product, the iPod. Of course, Apple responded with what amounts to “make me,” filing a counter-suit demanding the rescinding of Burst’s patents in question. First it’s France demanding Apple open its iPod and now Burst demanding back royalties. Maybe Apple should hire a better image consultant.

Platform holders take huge West Hall stands once more, as next-gen battle heats up

Platform holders Sony and Nintendo have once again taken the largest stands at the E3 trade show, with the two firms set to exhibit their next-gen consoles directly opposite one another in the West Hall of the LA Convention Centre.

The stands occupy the same space and location that they did last year, taking up the lion's share of the space in the West Hall, but this year the stakes are even higher, with both the PlayStation 3 and the Revolution expected to be playable at the show.

Sony and Nintendo's huge stands mean that most of the large publishers take their space in the South Hall, with Microsoft taking the single largest expanse in this hall, while companies such as EA, Ubi Soft, Vivendi Universal Games, Sega, Namco and Activision occupy other large South Hall stands.

This year there are also large stands in the South Hall for Korea's two largest online games companies, NCSoft and Webzen, while mobile phone company Nokia is taking a large space next to EA's stand, where it will undoubtedly be promoting its N-Gage software platform.

A report in the British newspaper the Mail On Sunday has alleged that Kevin Maxwell, the son of the late media tycoon Robert Maxwell, was involved in a failed bid to rescue collapsed mobile gaming company Gizmondo.

According to the paper, Maxwell held a meeting with top executives at Gizmondo last year and discussed a deal which would have seen him providing funding to keep the firm afloat in exchange for a stake in Gizmondo's US parent company, Tiger Telematics.

The deal fell apart, however, when Maxwell failed to produce the funding. Along with his brother Ian, Kevin Maxwell had previously been declared bankrupt with debts of over GBP 400 million - a figure which even dwarfs the debts with which Gizmondo finally sank.

Although Maxwell was acquitted of charges of fraud in the wake of the collapse of the Maxwell media empire in the early nineties, after the suspicious death of controversial media tycoon Robert Maxwell, the actions of the Maxwell brothers and their father were described by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry as "inexcusable."

In a related story, disgraced former Gizmondo executive Stefan Eriksson - who left the company prior to its collapse after it emerged that he had been convicted for his involvement with mafia organisations in Sweden - has been charged on a number of counts after his arrest in the USA last week.

Eriksson, who hit the headlines after his Ferarri Enzo crashed into a pole on a Californian highway at 162mph a few weeks ago, has been charged with embezzlement, grand theft and being a felon in possession of a gun, as well as two counts of drunk driving.

The embezzlement charge relates to taking three cars, including the Enzo, worth a combined amount of over US$ 3 million out of Great Britain despite being prohibited from doing so by lease agreements, while the gun possession charge is due to a gun being found in his home in Los Angeles in contravention of a law preventing convicted felons from possessing firearms. Eriksson has a felony conviction for counterfeiting dating from the early nineties. ...

At last year's GDC Nintendo President Iwata made the claim that the company was reaching out to everyone, in an attempt to expand the gaming market. They were planning to appeal to hardcore gamers, folks who used to play games, and folks who have never played a game in their lives. At the time, it sounded like a tag line. Today, I have impressions from three titles which suggest they've got what it takes to make us all into gamers. Hardcore players can sink their teeth into Metroid Prime Hunters, and have one of the most intuitive FPS experiences ever to come to a console. Folks looking for some nostalgia can enjoy Tetris DS, blockstacking like it's 1985. Even your grandmother can try Brain Age, proving to her bridge club that even though her license says she's 80 she's got the brain of a 20 year old. Read on for my impressions of three titles that give powerful evidence to support Iwata's grand claim

Orange Lounge Radio, admittedly not one we've heard of, claims to have got hold of a Konami release schedule for the rest of the year.

On it are a new Castlevania DS game called Portrait of Ruin, a pair of new Death Jr. games, a Silent Hill PSP game, a new Karaoke Revolution, three Dance Dance Revolution games (Dancing Stage here in Europe), and news of Bomberman Act Zero's release date.

Konami hasn't got back to us about the authenticity of the list, which names specific American release dates for each of the games, but it wouldn't be utterly surprising to find out it's true - Konami typically sneaks a few games into its line-up around E3-time without making a huge song and dance about it.

According to OLR's list, then, Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin will hit Nintendo DS on November 15th, Silent Hill Original Sin (reportedly a rejigged version of the original SH) will arrive on October 18th, Death Jr. 2 will appear on PSP on October 18th a week after Death Jr.: Science Fair of Doom hits Nintendo DS, Karaoke Revolution: American Idol (presumably a TV tie-in) is set for November 15th, while Bomberman Act Zero will appear on PSP and Xbox 360 earlier on July 12th.

The three new DDR titles, meanwhile, are DDR Supernova for PS2 (Sept 13th), DDR Universe X360 (Oct 11th) and DDR Ultramix 4 Xbox (Nov 14th).

As we said though, Konami hasn't officially confirmed any of this, so you ought to take it with a pinch of salt - although you might want to save some salt for the rest of the E3 build-up if previous years are anything to go by.
