A new coding competition that GP2X and Mobile Phonne Coders can enter, heres the full details:

Welcome to the Cutting EDGE Coding Competition! This competition is open to all developers, whether you are an individual, a group of individuals or a company who is using either an evaluation or commercial version of the EDGE library.

We decided to make a few changes in the competition. First of all, due to popular demand the deadline is extended to August 31st 2006!

Additionally, thanks to our collaboration with Pocketmotion, creators of the TiltCONTROL hardware device, we extended the competition with a new category: Best TiltCONTROL Enabled Game. As of version 2.40, EDGE fully supports the TiltCONTROL technology.

This divides the Cutting Edge Coding Competition in two categories: Best Cross Platform Game and Best TiltCONTROL Enabled Game.

As for the prizes: We believe it wouldn't be fair to offer a Gizmondo unit after the collapse of Tiger Telematics earlier this year, so we came up with a nice replacement for the Best Cross Platform Game category: an iPod Video! Furthermore, the kind folks at Pocketmotion offer a Sony PSP as the grand prize in the Best TiltCONTROL Enabled Game category!

    Category "Best Cross Platform Game"
The submitted game supports at least two platforms (i.e. Windows Mobile Pocket PC, Symbian Series 60, Windows Mobile Smartphone). The judging criteria will be based on:
    1. Cross Platform considerations
    2. Originality
    3. Game Play
    4. Fun Factor
Any additional support such as graphical effects and multi-networking games will earn you extra credit!

    Prize
The winner will receive a ton of cool stuff:
    - An iPod Video
    - A two year commercial EDGE license
    - $5,000 worth of free advertising at Clickgamer.com to promote the winning game

    Category "Best TiltCONTROL Enabled Game"
The submitted game makes use of Pocketmotion's TiltCONTROL hardware device. The judging criteria will be based on:
    1. Originality
    2. Game Play
    3. Fun Factor
Any additional support such as graphical effects and multi-networking games will earn you extra credit!

    Prize
The winner will receive a ton of cool stuff:
    - A Sony PSP
    - A one year commercial EDGE license

    Competition Judges
The Cutting EDGE Coding Competition will call upon an independent panel of Windows Mobile Pocket PC and Smartphone and Symbian Smartphone experts from throughout the world to judge and select winners for the best game entries. These experts will be contributors, helpers and associates of top mobile device (PPC, Smartphone, Gadgets) gaming websites.

    Rules
All submissions are created with EDGE, the evaluation or commercial version
For the category Best Cross Platform Game game submissions must support at least two platforms
For the category Best TiltCONTROL Enabled Game game submissions make use of Pocketmotion's TiltCONTROL hardware device
Both new and ported existing games are accepted
You can submit multiple games for both categories
The competition runs from December 7th 2005 until August 31st 2006
The winning submission will be announced in September 2006
During the running period of the competition we will ask you to supply screenshots of your work in progress to publish on the competition website. We will take short interviews with contestants about their experiences with EDGE and the work in progress

Recently I've discovered Super Mini Mario by Arguru and PSP3D ( http://PSP3D.com with many mods availible at http://pspsmm.com) and I'd like to discuss why it is not only popular but an excellent homebrew to boot.

    1. Super Mini Mario has fairly low overhead for what it is.

In other words, it doesn't take up a lot of space. That's a GOOD THING when ROMs and Emus take several MB at times, and when not everybody owns a 4 GB MS!

    2. Super Mini Mario is very moddable. Anything from new art to new music to new levels can be done.

This is one of the biggest selling points of SMM - it can be modded by ANYONE with very, very little knowledge. I made a level the other day in like 15 minutes, and I have no real coding knowledge other than web dev and some C++ - not that it was necessary.

The other good thing about this isn't just customization, but the fact that you can expand SMM to have as many levels as you want.. you can download them, create them yourself, etc.!

    3. MANY mods are already availible and cover alot of popular characters and franchises.

So far we have a Chocobo mod, several Sonic mods (for different characters), Pokemon mods, Halo mods... and of course more on the way I'm sure. All of these are also not just cosmetic, but also contain new levels.

    4. SMM is great for playing on the go!

It's just one of those simple and fun games that isn't shallow enough to get boring but not deep enough to deter you from playing in a few minutes of your spare time.

    5. SMM works on any firmware.

Indeed, SMM works on any firmware up to 2.6 to the very best of my knowledge. This isn't true with every program these days so it does count as a selling point in my book.

    6. SMM is original on a technical level.

SMM isn't a 'port' of Mario - the engine is brand-new. That's why it's so easy to create mods based on any franchise (or, yet to be seen - an original idea, haha) imaginable.

    7. SMM has the potential to keep growing through FANS of the software, not just devs!

This is a big point. Since anybody can mod it, anybody can contribute to content for the game.. there's already a fan-created level pack on the website I linked to of 25 levels. This also helps prevent SMM from becoming stale like so many homebrew releases sadly do after the dev either works on newer projects or no longer has time to do coding...

I'd have to say, next to Quake, this is the only homebrew on my MS right now! I just think that SMM is going to keep growing, at least for awhile. What are your guys's thoughts and feedback on this homebrew 'series'? ...

Ditlew one of the two coders of the Eloader has released a new menu for Eloader, heres what he says:

    Hi Folks

The 2 main features asked for in the feedback I got from the last public beta was gfx and alpha-sorting of the homebrew list. So I've looked into if that could be added without compromising the 3 keywords I have for eMenu.. simple, fast, stable. I think I've done it, let me know.

0.) eMenu-- is meant to be a simple, fast, stable no bs alternative to the standard eLoader menu.
1.) This is intended for use with eLoader v0.95+
2.) This is not an 'offical' release, it is only a public beta, meant for people to try out and give me some feedback. Don't download this file unless you know how to use a custom menu with the eLoader. If you don't, please wait for the proper release.
3.) No support is offered on this menu yet. If you don't know what to do with this file, don't download it. I don't want you to ruin your eLoader setup.
4.) I'm not going solo here, even though I'm the one working on eMenu--, it is a F&D project, and will be released as a part of the eLoader package.

Feedback can be emailed to [email protected].

Verge3 (Vecna's Extrodinary Role-playing Game Engine) is a game engine designed to help people make rpgs, but it can actually make most any game in a Genesis/ Super Nintendo style. It is Windows Native, written in C++, and allows for a huge amount of flexibility.
The GP2X port is an early version so expect some bugs. check out the Verge homepage at http://www.verge-rpg.com/ for more information in general
