Anti-game activists got another bit of ammunition today, courtesy of a study published in The Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine. The study, which was jointly conducted by San Francisco- and Pittsburgh-based researchers, came to the conclusion that playing violent video games leads to "permissive attitudes toward violence, alcohol use, marijuana use, and sexual activity without condom use."

The study, titled "Effects of Media Violence on Health-Related Outcomes Among Young Men," was based on a sampling of 100 male undergraduate students aged 18 to 21 years. It randomly assigned the subjects to play one of two video games--VU Games' The Simpsons: Hit & Run and Grand Theft Auto III. Subjects were selected so that the test group would have "differing amounts of lifetime home and community violence."

The study's conclusions? "Men randomly assigned to play Grand Theft Auto III exhibited greater increases in diastolic blood pressure from a baseline rest period to game play, greater negative affect, more permissive attitudes toward using alcohol and marijuana, and more uncooperative behavior in comparison with men randomly assigned to play The Simpsons," read the report.

It stated that specifically "only among participants with greater exposure to home and community violence, play of Grand Theft Auto III led to elevated systolic blood pressure in comparison with play of The Simpsons." The report continuted, "Although youth growing up in violent homes and communities may become more physiologically aroused by media violence exposure, all youth appear to be at risk for potentially negative outcomes."

The report ran in the same issue of the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine as an article that assesed the rating scheme of the Entertainment Software Ratings Board (ESRB). Titled "Content and Ratings of Mature-Rated Video Games," the study gave a mixed report card to the ESRB.

"Although the Entertainment Software Rating Board content descriptors for violence and blood provide a good indication of such content in the game, we identified 45 observations of content that could warrant a content descriptor in 29 games (81 percent) that lacked these content descriptors," read the report. ...

Now that Microsoft has finally managed to iron out its production issues for the next-generation console, the Redmond giant appears to be stepping up a gear, ramping up the orders for Xbox 360 chips from its Taiwan-based partners.

According to a report on the Digitimes website, translated from the Chinese language Commercial Times, the company has notified its Taiwan-based semiconductor partners that chip orders will be seriously ramped up, beginning this month.

The report claims that orders in the second quarter of the year are likely to double those of Q1, suggesting that Microsoft is making a determined effort to ensure that supplies of the machine are not only sufficient to cater for the current consumer demand, but plentiful enough to meet the traditionally hectic holiday season at the end of the year.

The company suffered considerable shortages in several territories following the tri-continent launch which began in the US last November, and continued component shortage issues have led to the retail supply only just beginning to filter through in any meaningful amounts.

With the imminent launch of both the Nintendo Revolution and Sony's PS3 in November, the last thing Microsoft needs is any further stock shortages that could damage its considerable market lead on its competitors.

The company recently announced plans to target Eastern Europe with the console, and following less than impressive sales in Japan, Microsoft has reaffirmed its commitment to conquering the Japanese market, making a concerted move to drive sales in the region with new promotions, locally relevant software launches and the introduction of a number of exclusive bundles and limited edition packages tied in with the World Cup. ...

Companies that develop inflight entertainment (IFE) systems for airlines have been in discussions with Apple about integrating the iPod and iTunes into IFE systems, according to several of the companies. Proposed applications include seatback-based iPod docks with USB and charging ports, allowing passengers to charge song and video purchases to frequent-flyer miles, and adding other ecommerce applications. "Our interests are wider – not just Apple, but enabling any e-commerce on the aircraft. Music is one thing in that category we are working on," said an exec with Panasonic Avionics. However, numerous obstacles stand in the way of inflight downloads, including changing Apple's licensing, so that songs downloaded directly to an iPod in the air could later be copied back to a customer's hard drive, and the issue of licensing and payment while a plane is in international airspace. Then, there's the issue of getting Apple to participate in the first place. When asked for a comment by editors at Flight International, the company issued what has to be one of our favorite "no comment" lines, especially for a technology company: "Apple never talks about the future." We'll keep that in mind. ...

It's table tennis. On Xbox 360. And it's coming from Rockstar. Although we'd love to reveal the presence of hidden car-jacking and crack-whore bashing mini-games and between-match bouts of throwing phosphorous grenades at cows, the project's all being served up (sorry, sorry) strictly straight-laced. By all accounts, it's a stellar virtual representation of the sport with equally stellar visuals coming courtesy of the power of Microsoft's next-gen machine.
Rockstar's bounced some new screenshots from Rockstar Games presents Table Tennis our way, so have a bit of a ping and a pong on us. We've also got the packshot for the game, which we're understandably very, very excited about. Enjoy. ...

It's no secret that we'd much rather live our lives in the warm, fuzzy world of Animal Crossing: Wild World, spending our days lazily yanking up plants, hacking down trees and flirting with porcupines. Now, Nintendo is offering even more incentive to spend the Easter holidays with our heads buried firmly in the flaps of our DS, with the news that Wild World users can download special presents from this Friday.

By connecting to Nintendo's Wi-fi Connection service between Good Friday and the end of Easter weekend, you'll recieve a special letter from the company, crammed right into your mailbox and containing some currently undisclosed goodies. Last time something like this happened, US punters got a letter straight from Nintendo head Satoru Iwata (presumably he wasn't writing each one by hand), bundled with an 8-bit coin directly from the original Super Mario Bros. - quite a nice talking point, if nothing else.

To be honest, we don't know what this Easter weekend will bring, but we'll be more than happy if it's an enormous gyrating Mario in a thong. Actually, we'd probably be more terrified than happy, but you get the general idea. ...

Could this be the V2 PSP? (No it isnt but interesting idea)

Sony is set to rock the gaming world once again with a new play platform entry. The PSi (interactive) is just 4.5” wide and carries a 3” LCD with 16 million colors. Other familiar features include a tightly squeezed UMD and memory stick duo. Amazingly the PSi has the same pixel resolution as PSP, with 480 x 272, so gaming titles will not have to be reformatted.New Tech Spy has learned through well placed sources that Sony is apparently hedging its bets against the possible death of UMD and positioning itself against Nintendo’s DS lite, which sold an impressive 380,000 in Japan in March.

The PSi is designed with a nearly unscratchable touch screen that will give users a virtual keyboard in which to enter internet addresses and other duties previously unavailable to PSP users. The rest of the body is constructed of matte finish plastic to eliminate the smudge-laden appearance of its glossy exteriored sibling. The " i" also gives the PSi the ability to work not just with WiFi networks but with WiBro, UMTS, EVDO, and future WiMax networks via switchable modules that correspond with each system and their sponsors... Which leads to some questions; wireless photo sharing?, peer-to-peer gaming? or possibly music, game and video downloads? One thing is for sure, without the support of UMD by the major movie studios, Sony may have to find another way to bring in profitable content.

Just to make sure your reading correctly this is a fake but like i said above its an interesting idea ...
