As US consumers continue to snap up Xbox 360s following the console's launch on November 22, Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has suggested that the ultimate victor in the console wars won't be decided until 2007.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Gates claimed that the software giant's second attempt at capturing the videogame console market is spearheaded by "the hottest product we've ever had."

The original Xbox console, which launched after Sony's PlayStation 2, failed to gain the market dominance Microsoft had hoped for - picking up just 18 per cent of the console market. Although considerable investment in the console did result in marked increases in the installed customer base, the Xbox has consistently remained in Sony's shadow.

Microsoft's ambitious tri-continent launch strategy - which will see the Xbox 360 hit Europe on December 2 and Japan on December 10 - will certainly give Microsoft a head start on its rivals this time around, but according to Gates, it hasn't been an easy process.

"For the last six months, we've been on the edge of our seats. I hope I don't get an e-mail saying 'Gosh, processor yields are too low, or this plastic factory burned down in Malaysia, so we'll have boxes but no controllers.'"

The US launch has been generally considered a success, and recent reports of Xbox 360 consoles overheating have been played down by the company. New details suggest that the cause is nothing more serious than a safety measure that protects the console by shutting down if the owner fails to allow proper ventilation for the hefty power pack.

Whilst both Sony and Nintendo intend to release their own next generation machines at some point in 2006, the Microsoft boss has suggested that it will still take time to decide who wins the latest console war. Interestingly, Gates' comments hint at a two-way race, ignoring the Nintendo Revolution and focusing on the battle for market dominance between Microsoft and Sony.

"We see ourselves having a higher share. We're not going to name some magic number but we're out to give the best gaming experience. By the end of 2007, you'll have kind of a sense of how much did Microsoft increase its market share: dramatically, not so dramatically, did Sony mess up, what happened?"

No dates have been announced for the launch of either the PS3 or the Revolution, and Microsoft's head start on the market for the next wave of gaming hardware has never been in dispute. What remains to be seen is whether or not the European and Japanese launches will be equally as successful as the US debut, and how well the machine performs in terms of its all-important software support once rival consoles hit market next year. ...

DS sales continue to exceed 100,000 units per week in PAL territories

Nintendo has announced that more than 1 million copies of puppy sim Nintendogs have been sold across Europe since the game launched on October 7th.

The Nintendo DS also continues to sell well, with more than 2 million units already shifted. According to Nintendo, weekly sales have topped 100,000 for the past three weeks - with 120,000 units sold last week alone.

The handheld's success is likely to continue with the release of Mario Kart DS, which hit European stores today. It's the first game that allows DS owners to play online via Nintendo's Wi-Fi Connection service. A Mario Kart DS bundle - which includes a handheld and a copy of the game - is currently retailing for GBP 99.

The announcement follows the earlier publication of Nintendo's half-yearly financial report, which revealed a fall in profits of 21.1 per cent. Nintendo attributed the drop to extra research and development costs and lower sales of GameCube consoles and software.

The company is predicting a further boost in sales of DS hardware and games as Christmas draws nearer, with titles such as Nintendogs and Mario Kart DS expected to sell well throughout the holiday period. ...

Nokia's VP of corporate strategy, Antii Vasara, has confirmed that there are no plans to develop future versions of the N-Gage as the company turns its focus towards other mobile entertainment media.

Speaking to Vnunet, Vasara admitted that the N-Gage did not achieve projected targets, stating: "N-Gage is still being sold but it was not a success in the sense of developing a new category."

"We learnt that people want to play games on all devices. As such we are integrating the gaming software into Series 60 phones."

Nokia will now focus on mobile TV and music with the introduction of handsets such as the N91 - a smartphone that can hold up to 3000 music tracks.

According to Vasara, Nokia will place a greater emphasis on mobile gaming in 2007, by which time screen sizes and quality will allow for better games.

Support for the existing N-Gage and N-Gage QD handsets continues, despite the fact that there are no plans to introduce further iterations in the series. Nokia recently announced the release of a raft of new software, and launched a new online store selling hardware and accessories. The company also continues to run N-Gage Arena, the mobile equivalent to Microsoft's Xbox Live online gaming service. ...

Nintendo has published financial results for the half-year ended September 30, revealing a drop in profits of USD 82.7 million from the same period last year - a fall of 21.1 per cent.

Consolidated net profit stood at YEN 36.63 billion (USD 308.4 million), down from YEN 46.45 billion (USD 391.1 million) in 2004. But despite the fall, the figure was slightly higher than that predicted in the company's financial forecast due to favourable foreign exchange rates.

Operating profit was down 51 per cent to YEN 19.6 billion (USD 165 million), while net income stood at YEN 36.6 billion (USD 308.1 million) - down from YEN 46.4 billion (USD 390.7 million) last year. Sales fell 6.2 per cent to YEN 176.4 billion (USD 1.49 billion).

Nintendo attributed the drop in profits to increased research and development costs as the company prepares to launch the next-generation Revolution console in 2006. The fall was also blamed on lower sales of GameCube consoles and software, particularly in North America.

Nintendo cut its forecast for the number of Nintendo DS units likely to be sold globally this financial year - the forecast is now down to 12 million from 12.4 million. The forecast for GameCube sales was also slashed from 2.8 million to 2.4 million, but Nintendo predicts that 11 million products from its Game Boy Advance range will be sold - an increase over the previous forecast of 10.2 million.

Nintendo's full year forecast was not altered: operating profit is predicted to stand at YEN 90 billion (USD 758 million), with net profit at YEN 75 billion (USD 631 million) and sales at YEN 400 billion (USD 3.4 billion). ...

We’re going to miss our favorite punching bag: after two years of disappointing sales, Nokia’s VP for corporate strategy says that they won’t be putting out any more N-Gage gamephones anytime soon. Sales haven’t been so hot, so they’re going to take the focus off of mobile gaming until 2007, when they expect that mobile technology will have advanced enough to make a dedicated gamephone a viable prospect (fortunately technology advanced enough between the original N-Gage and the N-Gage QD for them to eliminate the sidetalking). In the meantime they’re going continue with their plans to integrate the N-Gage’s gaming platform into regular N-series handsets. ...

Nintendo’s first-half profits dropped 21% for the period ending September 30. The company cites sluggish GameCube sales and slower US demand for the decline. Reuters writes: “Nintendo said last month that it believed GameCube’s life was nearing an end, while margins have been hurt by hefty development costs for Revolution.”

In lieu of the drop, the company slightly cut DS and GameCube forecasts for the full-year while raising Game Boy forecasts due to strong demand for the Game Boy Micro.

Many argue Nintendo to be the most profitable console manufacturer out of the big three, but hits like this can’t help. What could change this? They’ve got the portable market down to a science, but what does the company need to do on the console front to pose a threat to Sony and Microsoft? ...

CoverBuddy is a cute piece of software that makes your PSP somewhat useful. Using your Wi-Fi network, you can access iTunes and control it with your PSP. It’s $20 and works with Mac OS X, though a Windows version is planned. Could be worth the bucks if you are wandering around your house a lot, don’t have SONOS, and spent the cash on a PSP expecting fun things.
