Sony has told GamesIndustry.biz that it supports publisher initiatives to monetise second hand games consumers through online play, and that it is currently investing in a solution for its own first-party titles.

The move has been pioneered by Electronics with Project $10 and refined through the Online Pass, which charges those that buy games second hand to access online multiplayer services, helping publishers recoup some money in the controversial pre-owned market.

"On the principle of making online portions of the game available or unlocked from the disc-based release for a fee, we're broadly supportive of that," said Sony's European president Andrew House in an interview published today.

"And we're exploring actively the same option for our own content."

While EA has been first to roll-out the practice across the EA Sports line-up, other companies including Red Faction publisher THQ and French firm Ubisoft are also putting systems in place.

Activision's Bobby Kotick has suggested the monetisation of online console play could go further, and that he'd like to see a subscription service for Call of Duty games, but House said Sony would "struggle" with that idea, and warned against a one-size-fits-all attitude to pricing.

"In terms of just a charge for basic online play, that's something that we have to talk about a lot more and we struggle with a little bit because we feel very vindicated and base a lot of the success of PSN today - a 70 per cent connection rate across consoles - on the fact that we've removed that major initial barrier to entry."

Sony is making money from PSN with the recent introduction of PSN Plus, a premium subscription that bundles multiple free games, content and access to beta phases for a set fee.

Uptake is better than expected, said House, and the company is now beginning to analyse user patterns and observing the first consumer trends.

"It's interesting that there's been a more significant uptake on the annual subscriptions than there has been on the three months subscription, with the exception of Japan," detailed House.

"I think that we need to remain hard at work on ensuring the content offering and the content flow remain strong. I have a sense that there is a second tier of PSN users that are almost ready to sign up that are in something of a wait-and-see mode because they want to see a bit more of the roadmap and how it flows out and is it meaningful to them? Which is absolutely fair enough."

It's not just a successful service for Sony, said House, as the company gathers data to convince publishing partners that they can also take advantage of PSN Plus for marketing and sales boosts.

"As with any of these propositions we've got to validate it first and then show them some good viable data on it," he offered. "There's overall amongst publishers, certainly with European publishing partners, a good open flexibility to talk about different models and actively explore them.

"There's increasing recognition that within the network space for our audience it's a mistake to try and adopt a one-size-fits-all attitude. The network naturally leads you to a variety of business models. Creating multiple consumer options is the way to do that and publishers are latching on to that idea. Whether it's based around their own franchises or being part of a publisher-led initiative."

Square Enix's shooter sequel Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days has taken the top spot on the UK's all-format charts, becoming the publisher's third number one title of 2010 after Just Cause 2 and Final Fantasy XIII.

The original Kane & Lynch experienced nothing like as much success, managing only 14th during its highest-charting week, week 48 of 2007. The sequel received vastly mixed reviews, ranging from a 1/10 from Destructoid to a 9/10 from Official Xbox Magazine.

Activision's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has become the UK's biggest-selling game of all time, exceeding the sales of Dr Kawashima's Brain training, 41 weeks after release.

Only three weeks of those 41 have seen Modern Warfare 2 take a chart place outside the top ten, including this week, which saw the game take 18th, down ten places from last month's eight.

Sales of the first person shooter will no doubt go some way to support Activision's claim that it will become the world's most profitable entertainment company in the next five or ten years.

The title had already entered the record books after achieving record sales for its opening day, with first day sales of more than $401.6 million (£242.4m), making it the biggest entertainment launch of all time.

Online retailer Amazon has decided to stop selling Xbox Live Arcade games via its website, ending a partnership which began only 16 months ago in April, 2009.

Previously, the site had offered redeemable codes for purchase, allowing customers to pay for XBLA titles in national currency rather than with the publisher's proprietary Microsoft Points.

The companies had both trumpeted the announcement of the partnership, with Amazon's vice president of Video Games and Software, Greg Hart, claiming that: "PC gamers have enjoyed the convenience of digital downloads on Amazon.com for some time. Now Amazon.com and Microsoft are bringing that same level of convenience to platform gamers by expanding the reach of the Xbox Live digital platform to millions of Amazon customers"

Amazon continues to sell the Points for the service themselves, as well as membership for Xbox LIVE. Download codes are also still on sale for both WiiWare and PSN titles.

Defence Secretary Liam Fox has launched a scathing attack on the forthcoming video game Medal Of Honor, over reports that it allows players to kill British troops as Taliban soldiers. Fox has branded the new shooter from Electronic Arts "un-British" and has called on video games retailers to refuse to sell it.

In an interview with The Sunday Times, Fox said: "it's shocking that someone would think it acceptable to recreate the acts of the Taliban.

"At the hands of the Taliban, children have lost fathers and wives have lost husbands. I am disgusted and angry. It's hard to believe any citizen of our country would wish to buy such a thoroughly un-British game. I would urge retailers to show their support for our armed forces and ban this tasteless product."

Medal Of Honor, the latest instalment in EA's military first-person shooter, is set in present day Afghanistan and the single player campaign is centred around the efforts of US troops to defeat the Taliban. The publisher has reponded to the criticism from Fox by citing the game's authenticity. It also went on to point out that the reports stating that the game allows players to kill British troops for points are wholly inaccurate.

“Medal of Honor is an 18-rated highly authentic depiction of the soldier's experience in Afghanistan – matching US forces against the Taliban in today's war," an EA spokesperson said.

"Multi-player combat is a long-standing, common and popular feature of videogames. In multi-player, teams assume the identities of combatants on both sides of the conflict. Many popular videogames allow players to assume the identity of enemies including Nazis and terrorists. In the multi-player levels of Medal of Honor, teams will assume the identity of both US forces and the Taliban."

"The Sunday Times and other media stories on Medal of Honor contain inaccuracies," he added. "For one, Medal of Honor does not allow players to kill British soldiers. British troops do not feature in the game.”

Video games site Eurogamer.net has reported that the Department for Culture, Media and Sport has distanced itself from Fox's remarks, describing his comments as a "personal view". ...

EXP is a program wich add Experiencies (achievements, trophys, etc) to your games for GP2X and WIZ.
There is a SDK and a application to manage profiles.

[cut]For gamers (all goes in games directory, in Wiz):

    - EXP Application. Manage you EXP (or your friends one). Select one and exit. Last EXP selected will be the active one.
    - Escape from Minos (Versión EXP). 32 EXPERIENCIES, 1000 POINTS.

    For coders:

    - EXP_SDK. You know. exp.h in include directory, libexp.a in lib directory.

Include next line in your headers:

    #include

    and -lexp in link options.

    Examples.

exp_init(“Author”,”Escape from Minos”,screen); // screen is a SDL surface (optional)

    exp_add(1,10); // experience 1, 10 points
    exp_add(2,20); // experience 2, 20 points
    exp_add(3,30,1); // experience 3, 30 and is secret

    exp_add_desc(1,silly”,”you falled”); // description of experience 1

Do you want more languages? The system load the language selected in profile.

    exp_add_desc(1,”tonto”,”te has caído”,”Spanish”); // description spanish
    exp_add_desc(1,”silly”,”you falled”,”English”); // description english

    exp_win(1); // active experience 1
    exp_win(2); // active experience 2
    exp_win(3); // active experience 3

    Remember:

exp_update(); // just before SDL_Flip(), to show the system messages
exp_end(); // when close the game

There are another functions (look at exp.h):

exp_user(); // get the name of the profile
exp_data_path(); // get the path where you can save data files, etc...
exp_add_img() // add an image to experience
exp_add_icon() // add an image of the game

If you don't use SDL but want EXP, use exp_init("author","game",NULL); You don't see the messages, but data will be saved.

Data is stored in directory EXP, in root of SD.

It's a beta, but very stable. Please, I need feedback. Thanks to all.
