EA Sports boss and correct football team supporter Peter Moore has said that his Wii games struggle because people are happy with Wii Sports - and that licensed sports games for Wii will lag behind other formats for some time.

"The challenge we face," Moore explained during a chat with MTV Multiplayer, "is that that consumer gets Wii Sports right out of the box and that's a sports experience that's good enough for a lot of people."

Earlier this year Moore announced the All-Play range for Wii, which does more to make the company's sports games accessible and incorporate Wii-specific features like Miis and Jamie Redknapp.

Early examples include Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 All-Play, which has sold loads in the US, and caught our attention despite "the slightly opaque nuances of control needed to hit the medium shots and putt", as we put it. We're so wordy.

Moore told MTV that sales are alright - especially for Tiger - but that Wii owners will be given even more incentive to look up All-Play next year, and not just hardcore gamers who also own a Wii, although he's pleased that some of them have bought into All-Play already.

"As you well know, I was the proponent of the Wii60 in the early days. I think there's going to be a very strong multi-console ownership in homes. And I think that's bearing out," he said.

When it comes to the Wii Sports-loving casual brigade, though, "We know what we were doing wrong." Presumably we'll find out what that was and how it's been tackled when Moore and friends introduce us to the next round of All-Play games next year.

"The bottom line is we knew what we weren't doing right. We've corrected that. We're seeing progress. Is it easy? No. Will we ever see attach rates for authentic sports games, for licensed sports games, on the Wii to the same we see on 360 or PS3? Probably not in this cycle. Are we going to see continued growth of both? Absolutely." ...

Microsoft reckons the Xbox 360 will benefit from the credit crunch this Christmas, as families opt to stay at home and share affordable, long-lasting entertainment.

The console also doubles as a room heater, of course, and perhaps there's enough wireless battery acid for the whole family to wash in.

YouGov has surveyed 1000 people in the UK to get results, according to a press release.

Just under half wanted to buy one present the entire family could enjoy, for example. And nearly three quarters wanted to find presents that last longer than a day - like dogs.

Better still, just under half wanted to find an "extra special present" as they would be buying fewer anyway - which tackles the "more expensive" pitfall. Oh, and almost exactly half wanted to bring families together.

"In tough economic times, home entertainment products traditionally do well, as consumers tend to want to stay in and save money. Gaming and entertainment consoles like the Xbox 360 are seen as good value, given they can entertain the whole household through Christmas and beyond," said Martin Olausson from Strategy Analytics.

"Our trend research shows that families are looking for gifts that keep on giving throughout the year," said UK Xbox boss Neil Thompson.

"At an entry-level ERP of GBP 129.99, Xbox 360 offers an amazing experience for the whole family, so with the constant rise in other entertainment based activities such as going to the cinema, concerts and football games, it's clear Xbox 360 offers great entertainment value for families."

Japanese gaming mag Famitsu has revealed that Xbox 360 owners will be getting a special holiday treat next week, as a co-op demo for Capcom's Resident Evil 5 drops on Friday, December 5th.

The demo will consist of two stages, most likely the ones we've seen played through at trade shows throughout the summer, playable in either single player or co-op modes. Also in the article is news that Resident Evil 5 (okay, Biohazard 5) is being pushed up a week exclusively in Japan, now slated for release on March 5th instead of the 12th.

Keep in mind that the announcement only covers Japan, and only regards the Xbox 360, so PlayStation owners and non-Japanese folk will just have to wait while we poke Capcom vigorously with a stick. ...

Movies from Sony Pictures Entertainment are now showing up on the Netflix film streaming service via 360.

When users noticed that the service, added to US 360's when NXE launched, lacked access to Sony films the inevitable storm of conspiracy theories followed, but it turned out to be a simple licensing issue.

"Those titles are still available to be watched on subscribers' computers and on TVs via other partner devices, and we hope they'll be licensed for Xbox 360 shortly," said Netflix.

And now they have been, with Kotaku reporting that Sony's films are now back online and ready for your viewing. ...

Rare has told GamesIndustry.biz that the studio intends to "own" the avatar concept in new products for the Xbox 360, despite interest from third-party developers.

Mark Betteridge, studio manager for the Viva Piñata developer, believes there are multiple opportunities to utilise avatars in future game development, and last week's launch was only the beginning for the stylised characters on the system.

"There's a lot of interest in avatars by third parties, as you can imagine," said Betteridge.

"As standalone avatar products, we want to own that space, because we think it's a huge, huge space going forward - it appeals across genres, across age ranges, demographics, and there's an enormous opportunity there.

"I'm not going to name products, because I'm sure you can imagine our time frames, but we see this as the start of avatars, not that it's now done and dusted and therefore we're finished with it. It's more the foot in the door."

Betteridge also revealed that Rare first mooted the idea of avatars before the launch of the Xbox 360, in a bid to soften the image of the brand following the hardcore perception of the original Xbox console.

"The concept of avatars is something that we came up with about four years ago now. We were thinking about how hardcore and spiky the previous Xbox was, and everybody was of a view that the new one was going to be more smooth and friendly," he said. "Everybody was in agreement that was the right thing.

"So we pitched avatars as something out of the box with an interface where you build a character that looks like yourself, or whoever you want it to look like, and can play mini-games and things like that - but it represents you on the Live system, that's all it was based around."

Now that sales of the Xbox 360 have begun to pick up in Japan, Betteridge is also hopeful avatars can help the system further, and become universally accepted in all regions. He also noted Rare's previous involvement with Nintendo as a bonus for the team in understanding the Japanese market.

"They love the creative community aspect in Japan, rather than the destructive 'I'm gonna kill everybody and take over the world'. We were with Nintendo for seven or eight years before, so we've got a lot of experience with that market.

"It's a style that can cross boundaries - it's a difficult thing to do, to have a hit in three territories at the same time. Maybe our background with Nintendo, in that we've done that before - maybe avatars will be the first thing that will be popular everywhere?

"So I'd expect the avatars to be popular there, and I think the Xbox 360 - the European sales are very strong, and certainly Japanese sales have come out of a tunnel and can see some light. And North America's always been strong," added Betteridge.

The full interview with Mark Betteridge can be read tomorrow. Part one of the interview can be read here. ...

Do what now? This must be the season for left-field consoles to materialize.

The MyRacer is an oddly named handheld games device from Korea. It comes with a 320x240 color screen, an MP3 player, subway map and the ability to play Adobe Flash Lite files. It ships with Mini game heaven, Super Action Hero, Penoa jeongi, Punupunupong, and Come2us soccer 2006.

The 1GB of storage can hold up to 1000 Flash Lite games. Actually, I'm not sure there are 1000 Flash Lite Games. Maybe use it for MP3s instead. If you can't contain your enthusiasm, this will set you back 90,000 Won ($70-ish).

The Xbox 360's been doing great in Japan in recent months. So great, in fact, that even traditional, cranky old Square Enix are on the Microsoft bandwagon.

They're even painting a rosy picture for the console's future in Japan.

"We expect the Xbox 360 to increase its Japanese market presence even more in the coming months", Square Enix’s Shinji Hashimoto told Edge online. "There is a growing interest in Xbox 360 among Japanese users, due to the release of familiar titles, the increasing appeal of overseas titles, and the excellent reputation of the Xbox 360’s network services".

So, uh, why then isn't Final Fantasy XIII coming out on 360 in Japan? That burning question goes unanswered. Maybe it needs to be asked of Sony, and not Square Enix...

Japanese publication Famitsu has given another coveted perfect scores. The latest perfecto is 428 ~Fuusa Sareta Shibuya de~ a visual novel for the Wii from Chunsoft and SEGA, the second Wii game to receive it.

The story, set in Tokyo's Shibuya, follows a young man, a virus researcher, a detective, a freelance writer and a cat mascot character as they brought together by strange events of global proportions. The visual novel uses photographs to tell the story.

Famitsu seemed most impressed with the game's story, the story's ending and the title's sound design.

This is only the ninth time Famitsu has done this in the last ten years. And the third time this year. (Feel free to connect those dots yourself!) The other titles scoring 40 on Famitsu's 40 scale are: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998), Soulcalibur (1999), Vagrant Story (2000), The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (2003), Nintendogs (2005), Final Fantasy XII (2006), Super Smash Bros. Brawl (2008), Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots (2008) and 428 (2008).

For anyone who cares, in the same issue Fallout 3 got a very respectable 10, 10, 9, 9.

That's Atindriya Bose, country manager of PlayStation India. He's here to tell us all about India, a growth region Sony has been supporting full force.

While Bose calls PS2 and PSP sales "healthy," the exec notes that the PS3 still has yet to take off. "While most people buy genuine PS2s and PSPs," says Bose, "they tend to buy PS3s from the grey market due to the heavy price." What's more, Bose says the recently-launched-in-India DS hasn't much affected the PSP sales. The country still does not have the online infrastructure for the PSN as it would take some users days to download games.
