We love unique, video game inspired artwork just as much as the next guy -- our weary-spined copy of "i am 8-bit" can vouch for that. However, we also love our preserved, cherished memories of our NES era heroes. These two feelings conflict when looking at Jimi Benedict's surreal video game art -- our inner Andy Warhol loves Benedict's incredibly unique and lovingly detailed portraits, but the traditionalist in us prefers not to think of Link as a gap-toothed, Sloth-faced dwarf.

You can see both full portraits after the jump, but to see the rest of Benedict's art (including what appears to be a mock-up title screen to the lesser known NES game Obama: Take the Power Back), you'll have to go to his website -- a swirling vortex of complete madness and totally rad drawings.

We'll be straight with you -- we aren't surprised one iota by this one. For those keeping tabs, Samsung's slate of Blu-ray players have been plagued with issues essentially from day one, and while it has released a flurry of firmware updates over the years in an attempt to mend a variety of incompatibility issues, even its recent BD-UP5000 hybrid player is being axed early on after giving owners all sorts of fits. Apparently, one particular buyer isn't taking things lying down, and has decided to file suit against the mega-corp alleging that it has sold "defective Blu-ray players" to consumers. According to the suit, Sammy was "fully aware of the defective nature of the player [BD-P1200, in particular] at the time of manufacture and sale," and it also claims that the firm has "failed to provide a remedy consistent with the products' intended and represented uses." More specifically, the verbiage picks on the units' inability to play back select BD titles, and while some fixes have indeed been doled out, we still get the feeling many consumers have been left dissatisfied. Needless to say, this outcome should be interesting.

    News/release from Jumpr:

Even though there is no real use in it, it's neat to have your system information show a different firmware Normally you were required to HEX-edit the vshctrl.prx and reflash it, this had some danger (well, not with Pandora now, but heh ). But not anymore, it's all flashless now.

This is a small plugin that allows you to change the version number without any flashing (but in memory, instead), please note that this doesn't allow you to play any new games or use new features, it only changes the version number in system information.

    Readme:

    Quote:
-- Flashless Version Changer by JumpR
Coded by JumpR, tested on fat PSP by me, FmR and Kwastie.
Tested on Slim by Nick48, great thanks to him for providing me the Slim vshctrl memory dump and allowing me to port it

Very simple plugin to change the version number in 3.90 M33 System Information, enable the plugin and create a vchanger.txt in the root, which you fill with the version you want.
It doesn't need to be a numeric version, you can use anything you want, even complete words But the maximum it can go is 10 bytes, not any longer.

Only compatible with the firmware 3.90 M33, might add other firmwares later.

If you used version 1, there is no longer any need to space it upto 10 characters, it's all fine now

    News from Bman:

I divided my pwads into sections of 6 since there are only 6 savegames for Heretic.
I wanted to be sure I had at least one save per mod. I also edited the header

The pwads are included. I scoured doomworld and google for top rated wads but you
can judge for yourself. All required files are included per instructions.

    This pack contains:

Avatar, Eternity, Wizard's Revenge, Subterranean River, Supplies, The Keep

For this config to work, please add the following files:

    ./heretic.wad (full)
    ./README.txt
    ./pwad1/Heretic2X.gpe
    ./pwad1/mapping.txt

Copy ./pwad1/gmenu2x/Heretic2X_Addon1.g2x to the section of your choice.

    I have it in /gmenu2x/sections/interpreters/Heretic2X_Addon1.g2x
You can now select your mod with a screenshot and a named savepoint.
Of course, if you save another mod than the named save then all bets are off.

For people that don't like menus with screenshots, just use the included ./runsingle files.
Run them from gp2x or add them to gmenu2x like any other link.

A legally enforceable cinema-style classification system is to be introduced for video games in an effort to keep children from playing damaging games unsuitable for their age, the Guardian has learned. Under the proposals, it would be illegal for shops to sell classified games to a child below the recommended age.

At present only games showing sex or "gross" violence to humans or animals require age limits. That leaves up to 90% of games on the market , many of which portray weapons, martial arts and extreme combat, free from statutory labelling.

Ministers are also expected to advise parents to keep computers and games consoles away from children's bedrooms as much as possible, and ask them to play games in living rooms or kitchens facing outward so carers can see what is being played.

Ministers are also expected to recommend blocking mechanisms to protect children from seeing unsuitable games, emails or internet sites. Discussions have already been held with internet service providers to see if an agreement on a standardised filter can be reached.

A review of violence and video games has been commissioned by Gordon Brown from the former television psychologist Tanya Byron. She is officially due to report next month, but education and culture ministers have a sense of the report's direction. She has previously said she would examine the current classification system to see if it is confusing for parents.

The report's contents, which include a lengthy review of the literature on the impact of video games on children, has been discussed between the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Ministers are anxious to strike a balance between the entertainment, knowledge and pleasure children gain from highly profitable internet and computer games, as well as the dangers inherent in the unregulated world of the net and its overuse by children.

Under the Video Recordings Act, most games are exempt from the British Board of Film Classification and only lose this exemption if they depict, to any significant extent, gross violence against humans or animals. Other games can be classified by a separate, entirely voluntary pan-European scheme administered by the Video Standards Council.

Policing such regimes is difficult as it is possible to buy games over the net and simply tick the box stating the purchaser is over 18.

A new British Standards Institution specification proposed by Ofcom, the communications regulator, and the industry is expected to allow the developers of filtering products to test them against the standard designed to protect children and other users from illegal or unsuitable content. Companies that pass the test will be able to display a child safety online kitemark.

Ministers hope the Byron review will act as a way of calming the debate about video games which has become increasingly polarised and based on prejudice. They say they are also willing to examine proposals made by a Tory MP earlier this week for an internet standards authority to be set up to ensure that service providers offer a two-tier system with users able to pick content suitable for adults or children.

In a further sign of Tory concern, Julian Brazier will bring forward a private member's bill this month giving powers for a new body to appeal against decisions of the BBFC in its classification of video games and DVDs.

Hugo Swire, a former shadow culture secretary, has suggested that the default setting for internet content would be for children, with a password or pin needed for unfiltered material.

As it turns out, Microsoft may be breaking a few hearts by not being able to fulfill all its Zune 80 Valentine's Day Originals shipments, but not all is lost for their loving customers. Users who haven't already gotten their units will apparently get a full refund -- as well the player they ordered. Aw, isn't that candy-heart sweet? And should you wind up with one of these for V-Day, you might try every so gingerly asking for dinner with that $250 your special someone saved.
