Zodttd has released a new version of his GBA Emulator for the Apple iPhone:

gpSPhone, the Gameboy Advance emulator, has been updated to v1.5.0. New changes in this release includes:

    - Added support for both scaled/unscaled landscape and portrait view settings.
    - Added support for firmware 1.1.3’s “mobile” user. gpSPhone should run well on 1.1.3 now.
    - Added hardware accelerated scaling for better performance and look.

This release should be very stable and slightly faster. You now have the option between portrait and landscape mode. Hardware scaling gives a smoothed over looking picture, which some may prefer, with the advantage of performance.

A big thanks to Exophase, the author of gpSP, for his continued work on emulation. Without him, gpSPhone couldn’t exist.

    Zodttd posted this news:

The Firmware 1.1.3 jailbreak was made public. But not once, instead three different people released three different versions along with different updates to those versions! Whew, a lot has been going on. The issue to developers of iPhone and iPod Touch software is the difference in which user runs the applications we program. In previous firmwares earlier than 1.1.3, we used user ‘root’. And hence we had /var/root/Media and /var/root/Library to store our files and settings in, respectively. Things have changed in 1.1.3:

    - Nate True released a version of 1.1.3 that uses the legacy root user for control of running applications. This is great for compatibility, but the firmware had other issues.

    - NerveGas released an official dev team release that uses user ‘mobile’ for running applications. But this release had a corrupted installer.

Finally planetbeing made a proper release with following updates, which uses the proper ‘mobile’ user. But there’s some problems I found…

The problem with using the mobile user, is the user of an application has to be aware of the ownership and permissions of directories much more than before.

For instance, gpSPhone v1.5.0 being released today, uses /var/mobile/ if available. But in planetbeing’s release the /var/mobile/Library and /var/mobile/Media directories are often owned by user root.

If root owns either of these directories, settings and savestates can’t be saved since user mobile won’t have write permissions in the “Other group”. So this is all very confusing to some, but there’s a simple fix. Run SSH, login as root, and use the following command to set ownership of this directory recursively:

    chown -hR mobile /var/mobile

This command will then fix many issues found when installing applications under 1.1.3 when using the /var/mobile/[…] directory. It only fixes the ownership of the /var/mobile directories that get created as being owned by root. Make sure when creating directories after running this command, such as /var/mobile/Media/ROMs, that you chown this directory to being owned by mobile such as using the command above again. This of course is only required if the directory being created is owned by root.

So I’m working on getting my software working under all three firmware releases, all of which have different issues. What a mess huh?

For those C&C fans waiting for the classic franchise to make a debut on Nintendo's handheld, it might be worth noting that March 14 is the date you've been waiting for.

Command and Destroy takes its cues from Dune 2, Red Alert and Starcraft, and claims to bring that style of gameplay to the DS, says the release.

In typical RTS fashion, players acquire credits through the exploitation of oil and then use those credits to build an alien army to defeat a human colony, or a human one to fend off the invading alien hordes.

As well as a twenty-four mission strong single-player campaign, a multiplayer skirmish mode is available, for those who have fond memories of amassing a hundred units and sending them up against a mate's pitiful army.

The screenshots are not fantastic, but they're not that bad either. With a release date approaching fast, we'll make a few phone calls to see what more we can find out.

Foreign criminals (to the UK) are being given Nintendo Wiis and plasma televisions to keep them entertained before being deported to their home countries, The Telegraph is reporting.

Detainees at Colnbook Immigration Removal Center in Berkshire are serving time for offenses including rape and murder, but are treated to a Wii in some of the communal areas where they are hooked up to a 48" plasma TV.

We're not sure on the validity of these claims though, as some of the details just don't add up. For example, a source inside the centre told The Telegraph, "Some detainees have Nintendo Wiis. If the consoles go wrong staff are sent to the nearest Argos to pick up a replacement."

Go wrong? Sounds more like they're using Xbox 360s to us. Plus, can you even buy a Wii from Argos straight over the counter? We thought there was still a shortage going on?

Also, doesn't the government think videogames are a danger to society? Surely exposing rapists and murders to these games is a bad idea, unless Gordon Brown has implemented an A Clockwork Orange style overhaul to solve the immigration crisis we keep hearing about. ...

A pre-release version of Nokia's new N-Gage gaming platform is now available for Nokia N81 users. N-Gage First Access lets N81 owners download the pre-release version of the N-Gage application (through which all N-Gage activity takes place) and try and buy select N-Gage games. Other N-Gage compatible devices will be added to the service in due course. Read on for more.

In order to use the N-Gage service you must download the N-Gage application. This is the portal application that allows access to the games and community features. This is a pre-release version and the features of the service are still evolving.

The First Access portion of the N-Gage web site has all the details you need including the download, FAQ and support forums.

Here's what the N-Gage Blog has to say about First Access:

N-Gage First Access allows Nokia N81 owners to download the pre-release version of the N-Gage application, try and buy N-Gage games, and provide feedback on the experience. It’s a great opportunity to be the first to join the new wave of mobile play.

The features available through this pre-release version of the N-Gage application are constantly evolving, so keep in mind that this offering is only the beginning, and our feature set, game catalog and device portfolio will continue to grow in the weeks and months ahead.

We'll be updating this news story with more screen shots and opinion over the next few hours.

In case you're wondering - this version really is limited to the N81. If you try and install the SIS file on another phone it will fail because there is a device check.

Nicolas Pillot has updated Scrabble Assistant DS,

This utility is meant to ease the life of players using the board version of the Scrabble game.
Scrabble Assistant DS is a utility program designed to run on the Nintendo DS plateform. It has been programmed to run on homebrew-enabled flash carts. A simple "DS homebrew" google search will give you pointers if you have no idea what these things mean.
As shown on the file list above, there are various versions : a french version using the "Officiel du Scrabble 5" word list, an english version using the "TWL word list", another english version using "SOWPODS" word list. As of version 0.6 and up, each dictionnary has the full 2-15 letter words.
The idea came from the fact that if you have no dictionnary, you have to trust other players' words. So here comes the "Check" function. And sometimes, when you have "good" letters, and you make your choice with a word, you feel that you could have done better... So here comes the "Search" function. And you have to bear with the cumbersome score calculation. So here comes the "Score" function. This function allows for solo playing, and up to 9 players. End-game substractions can be done too, see included README file.
Other notable features are : up to 900 search results with paged viewing, score calculations with up to 130 score entries per player and paged viewing, search length/score/alpha sort options, checks all of the dictionnary to find the best candidates for each sort option, provides a mean to lock out search and check options using any custom key-combination to prevent cheating, nice minimalist interface, which is even big enough for you to use your fingers to control the UI, and best of all, sound clicks :-)
Here is a quick overview of the way the program works : The above screen displays the data in the "Search" and "Score" functions. The lower pane displays the functions' buttons on the bottom. Above them you find the keyboard. Above it, you have the input pane, where you can check what you're currently typing (the arrow on its right side deletes the last thing typed). On the right side, you have the optional buttons, which appear accordingly to the desired function. Everything should be pretty self-explanatory. Be sure to take a look at the README file for various information about special functions (such as end-game scoring, and "party-mode" search/check lock function).
Additionnally, there's a "locking" function available. This is used to prevent players to use either (or both) of the check/search functions, by locking them out using any custom key-combo. For example when you're playing serious with friends, or in tournament or something, and you want to be sure noone uses the given function to get an unfair advantage. Both functions can be locked independantly, temporarily (do the same combo again to unlock) or permanently (only a console reset will bring the function back). More information on how to use this "lock" function is to be found in the README file.
Everything is packed in the .nds executable. The program runs smoothly in no$gba, and has been thoroughly tested on an MK5 flash cart. It doesn't access any part of the cart once loaded, and as such, should not require any dldi patching. I kept each .nds size as low as possible so it should load on any cart without any problem. In case it doesn't start, please say it on the forums.

    0.6c TWEAKING UPDATE
    - added low-power mode when lid is closed
    - added D-pad scroll abilities (Up/Down)

Final Fantasy Versus XIII may be the most mysterious of the three known FFXIII projects, but, in a surprising twist, it's going to be the first one with a soundtrack! HMV Japan has posted a listing for a new soundtrack from Square Enix that will contain tracks from the TBA title.

The soundtrack is called Drammatica - The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura. Being released in celebration of Shimomura's 20th anniversary as a game music composer, the soundtrack will include selections chosen by Shimomura herself, re-recorded using overseas orchestras (overseas as in outside of Japan).

FF Versus XIII music is being included as a bonus.

Look for the Drammatica CD on March 26 at a cost of 3,000 yen. When contacting your favorite importer, ask for catalog number SQEX10112 on the Square Enix label. ...

Heres a rather excellent release/news from the great DevFR forums and Ecaheti

    Hello everyone!

I helps me newser myself to share with you my Finally, our project of Completion.
For recituer context, as part of my engineering studies, I had a project to be carried out in a business or a personal project. The beginning of the project was February 2007. In December 2006 I discovered PAlib, and as a geek, I decided to do my project.
So I mounted with a vague pretext darling (student at my school too) to propose a project with the DS, namely drive a robot with the DS.

Stroke of luck, the school had a small robot shaped vacuum, Pekee, which wanted to use it to be out of his closet.

January, we recruited 4 persons (the project is done in teams of 6). From February to June 2007, we conducted studies on the various options and the achievement of tricks "innovative" to do with the console (with specifications, feasibility studies and the like).
From September 2007 to January 2008, we completed the technical part.

    The basic idea:
6 steering interfaces (to send orders genre forward, backward, left, right, stop or otherwise)
    -- Keyboard
    -- Virtual buttons
-- Target (based on the handling of Mario in Mario 64 DS)
    -- Spatial
    -- Vocal
    -- Recognition of form

Liaison between the DS wifi and Pekee.

    In the end:
6 interfaces as planned, except that the voice recognition is replaced by a recognition "music", it plays a note to the flute, the note is recognized and corresponds to an order. The principle behind algorithmic is the same except that the calculation time is faster and easier identification.
The Liaison, which was to be reported directly to the intermediary of a Linux server. That's because the Pekee must be driven with its own library of programming that we have failed to focus on the DS. Broadly speaking, it runs a program that drives the robot.

Our demos were feeling at school, and now it's all over, let me offer expose the finished project.

At the project's future, I intend to continue to work primarily on voice recognition (improve algo.) Because the courses are finished, and I have more robot! The reco voice is the only thing that really needs to be improved.

The program can be used in offline mode for those who want to see what it looks like. I guess it's not much n'impressionnera world since it remains "a remote control."

And a small video because it's funny like that view

    http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=b_UHPoXOtfQ

(I tried to integrate video, not work, a nice if someone want to tell me how it's done!)

In terms of special thanks, of course Mollusk that we troubleshoot / help / support for a year. This guy sends wood.

PS: you have a site with some docs on the project, but it has not been updated since .. Pfiou .. Long. I shall update and I posterai link
