Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg tells Next-Gen that top retailers had reported Xbox 360 hardware outages during Black Friday week, as the new Arcade package performs above expectations.

Microsoft announced Thursday that that Xbox 360 sold 310,000 units for the week of November 18 in the US. This compares favorably to the year-younger Nintendo Wii, which sold 350,000 units during the same time frame.
It's highly likely that the gap could've been wider if Nintendo was able to keep up with the Wii's runaway demand.

Microsoft said that it outsold Sony's PlayStation 3 2 to 1 last week, according to retail estimates.

Hi there, it's James from www.rgcd.co.uk here again.

Not only have we slashed our GBA homebrew cart costs, but we've recently teamed up with Paradise Games to bring you a seasonal GBA special; our Christmas Double Pack!

For the last couple of years, Ian and the rest of the Paradise team have entered the Christmas game development competition hosted by www.drunkencoders.com, winning the competition in 2005, and receiving an honourable position in 2006. After playing their games extensively I had a brainwave; perhaps Paradise Games would be interested in working with RGCD to create some sort of Christmas-themed compilation for our readers? A few emails later and the Paradise/RGCD Christmas Double Pack GBA cart was born.

So what do you get for the bargain £5.50 price tag? Limited to 50 copies, the double-pack (which is a deliberately erroneous title as the cart actually includes a third hidden game..!) contains both Santa's Chimney Challenge and Santa's Skidoo Scarper; arguably the best Christmas themed releases to grace the GBA platform. Visit the RGCD Shop to buy your copy today!

Read full game review at http://www.rgcd.co.uk/shop/reviews/paradise-double/

The cart pricing is as follows:

    UK Customers (Including 1st Class P&P) - £5.50
    UK Customers (Including 1st Class Recorded P&P) - £6.25
    Worldwide Customers (Including Worldwide P&P) - £6.75

Please note that these carts are sold strictly on a non-commercial, non-profit basis. Any and all revenue from cartridge sales will directly offset the cost of production and shipping. Faulty carts and other returns will be refunded in full. ...

Here is a new version of PSPMSX the MSX series Emulator for PSP.

For those who haven't seen previous versions, fMSX is a famous emulator of the
    MSX, MSX2, and MSX2+ 8bit home computers.
It runs MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ software on many different platforms including Windows and Unix.
    See http://fms.komkon.org/fMSX/ for further informations.
It has been first written by Marat Fayzullin, and later Vincent van Dam ported it on SDL.

    What's new in version 1.2.3 :

    - Major speed improvements while using GU render modes
    - Small changes in settings menu and default settings options

How to use it ? Everything is in the README.txt file.

for the original MSX part, and under GNU license for all the PSP part.

As nine new entries hit the Japanese software chart, the game-buying public snapped up 1.44 million new titles that made up just the top ten last week.

According to data from Media Create for the sales week ending November 25 Dragon Quest IV saw one of the biggest releases of the year, selling 597,000 copies in its first week and going straight in at number one.

The latest Winning Eleven title from Konami took second and third places for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3 respectively - the former outsold the latter by two to one, although the install base of the PS3 is of course still much smaller at this point.

Other notable new entries to make the top ten included Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess for the PlayStation 2 - only making fifth place with 68,000 units - and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games in sixth.

Mario Party DS was the only survivor from last week's top ten - it held steady in fourth position.

The Xbox 360 editions of Winning Eleven and Final Fantasy XI both made the top 30, in 18th and 26th positions respectively.

The full top ten is as follows:

    1. Dragon Quest IV (DS)
    2. World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (PS2)
    3. World Soccer Winning Eleven 2008 (PS3)
    4. Mario Party DS (DS)
    5. Final Fantasy XI: Wings of the Goddess (PS2)
    6. Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)
    7. Dinosaur King: The Seven Fragments (DS)
    8. Mega Man Star Force 2: Berserk × Shinobi (DS)
    9. Mega Man Star Force 2: Berserk × Dinosaur (DS)
    10. Pachinko Assassin III: Iron Pachi-Chonmage 13 (PS2) ...

Nintendo has told Eurogamer that Professor Layton and the Mysterious Village will be out in the US on 18th February.

However, plans are yet to be made for Europe, but you could always import a copy what with it being a region-free DS title.

Developed by Level 5, of Dragon Quest VIII fame, Mysterious Village is the first in a trilogy of adventure titles based around brain-teasing puzzles by some University boffin and linked together with an overarching storyline.

You may never have heard of it, but Professor Layton has been been so wildly popular in Japan it has shipped around half a million copies since February and prompted two follow-on games.

Regional magazine Famitsu unearthed the third instalment recently as Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel, due to be released some unspecified time in the future. Meanwhile second game Professor Layton and the Devil's Box goes on sale this week in Japan.

Pop over to the Japanese website for an idea of what to expect. ...

Ubisoft has popped us the first dossier of information on rifle units in real-time strategy title EndWar.

It follows on from an announcement last Friday that there would be three factions each with different characteristics: the European electronics nerds, the fancy Americans, and the grizzled Russians.

Over in the cold reaches of Russia life is hard and so are its Spetsnaz Guard Brigade Wolves, who use sandpaper to wipe their bottoms with if indeed they dab them down at all. AK-47 is still their weapon of choice, stereotypically, coupled with a sniper rifle called an OSV-120. Obviously the old AK-47 has undergone some improvements between 1974 and 2020 (present day), too.

Finishing off their big, bulky and menacing persona is some big, bulky and menacing armour they wear on the outside like underpants at a fancy dress party.

European special force the Enforcer Corps has different plans though, and when it split from NATO it realised how rubbish its rifle ammunition was and so made some new stuff. Clever. These Kommandos are similar to chivalrous Knights of yore apparently, steadfast in their beliefs and fighting for the greater good - albeit in a Rainbow Six counter-terrorism way, with fancy computer this and technology that. Also, probably not on horses.

The Joint Strike Force of the USA, on the other hand, went to private school to learn about guns and things, so are very well trained and could go to Harvard. Controversially - you won't believe this - they use a rifle of Belgian origin! They also have a SCAR A1 to mow down what could be enemies with, which is really quite fancy and apparently better than what they had before.

Overall they resemble the sort of unit you will have played in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter; able to call in support from land, air, and sea, thanks to clever communications technology like walkie-talkies, over.

Shoot your way blindly over to our Tom Clancy's EndWar gallery for a look at some exclusive shots for each faction.

Charles Martinet, the man who provides the chirpy vocals for Mario, is working on an autobiography about his time voicing the most iconic videogame character ever.

Martinet's writings, which he aims to have ready for release next year, will paint a picture of Nintendo from the inside as he reveals what it's like to work with the games giant, and provide the voice for such a huge icon of videogames.

"I've actually started working a little bit on a book, but it's about finding the discipline to keep going.", he told CVG. "But I will be inspired by fans," such as one, explained Martinet, who said to him at the recent Mario Galaxy launch event in London: "You're the voice of my childhood."

"That's the sort of thing that makes you think 'yes, I want to write a book so that I can acknowledge that'," Martinet told CVG.
He also added his thoughts on the whole violence in videoganmes debate, saying: "Violence in videogames, if you can call it violence - you have to take it into perspective. I don't think that people go out and steal cars because they play a car stealing game, any more than I think that someone is going to shoot somebody because they play a shooting game. You don't do that because that a game."

He adds: "It's up to parents and family members to know what their children are doing and how much time they spend doing it and the impact those things have on them. People playing Mario games don't make them like pasta any more."

A new study from the University of Michigan has concluded that violence depicted on television, in movies and in videogames poses "a serious threat to public health" that is second only to smoking.

"Exposure to violent electronic media has a larger effect than all but one other well known threat to public health. The only effect slightly larger than the effect of media violence on aggression is that of cigarette smoking on lung cancer," said the report.

The research, carried out by L Rowell Huesmann and Brad Bushman, and detailed by Reuters, links a child's exposure to violence with an increased likelihood of actual violence in adulthood, for both males and females.

"Children are also spending an increasingly large amount of time playing video games, most of which contain violence… The research clearly shows that exposure to virtual violence increases the risk that both children and adults will behave aggressively."

The report did admit that not every child exposed to violence will show evidence of increased aggression, but concluded that more controls were needed from parents and society on what children are exposed to. ...

Superintendent Bill Harrison, New Zealand's national manager of police youth services, has told a youth offending conference in Wellington that he sees a link between the rise of violent videogames and the increase in the number of young people arrested for violent conduct.

According to a report in the New Zealand Herald, Harrison noticed the link after finding his own son playing a game.

"It was desensitising him to violence. It was shifting his norm about how he would deal with conflict. You see these kids - their hands are wringing wet with sweat because their bodies are taking in what's going on on the screen and they are acting it out."

Harrison also believes that the crime rates in youths aged between 14 and 20 are also rising due because of a greater focus on family violence, which is leading to a greater detection rate.

But he added that the government would be commissioning research into youth violence, which should take in the influence of interactive media. ...

The European Live Video Marketplace will only be available in UK, Ireland, France and Germany.

Those were the emboldened words splayed across the back of packaging for a recently bought Microsoft Points Card, keenly spotted and scanned by Joystiq.

However, Microsoft refused to comment on these territorial restrictions, possibly because of regional licensing issues for films and telly shows or maybe they're just scared.

Its appearance on packaging also suggests we may see the video on demand service before the end of the year, although MS has reportedly already revealed it will not be a part of the Autumn Live update next Tuesday.

The same packaging - making a name for itself now - also points out that you will be able to download "great movies", but fails to mention anything about shows from telly.

Video Marketplace has been available in the US since last November, and pumps out films alongside shows like Star Trek and CSI, which in the Miami version features a ginger man with a great voice. ...
