Despite recent announcements of a lower-priced PS3 being released in Japan and Europe, Sony has not yet confirmed that a similar model will be sold in the US.

Nevertheless, the assumption is that such a console will be made available in early November, supported by internal documents obtained from a US retailer showing the new SKU as well as documents Sony filed with the FCC on a new product with a model designation similar to those of the existing PS3 consoles.

The Hollywood Reporter became the latest to join the rumour mill, recently reporting that both an industry source and a retail buyer expect the new system to be released on November 2.

So, with all the chatter, why hasn't SCEA admitted the existence of the new model?

"These rolling announcements suggest to me that Sony has an inventory control problem, with too many unsold 60GB units out there, and they don't want to have to cut the price to clear them," Wedbush Morgan securities analyst Michael Pachter told GamesIndustry.biz.

Pachter thinks that Sony will either wait to announce the 40GB model after the 60GB units have been cleared out, or else it will "accept reality and bundle [the 60GB with] a game and an extra controller for USD 499.99, giving consumers some value for their money."

As with other analysts, Pachter does expect the price reduction to significantly drive sales volume. He estimates that the PS3 sell-though may pick up 50 per cent for every hundred dollars in price reduction.

Pachter doesn't believe the loss of backwards compatibility will be an issue.

"I don't think most people who waited this long care enough about backwards compatibility to affect their decision either way," he said.

Nintendo has already publicly stated that the Wii will once again be in short supply this holiday season. Might that encourage Wii-less consumers to purchase a PS3 instead?

"In my view, the typical Wii buyer is either someone who would not have otherwise bought a [games console] but was intrigued by the Wii, or is someone who fully intends to buy a PS3 or 360 eventually, when price or software support is sufficient to prompt them to do so," explained Pachter.

From the sounds of it, it is now possible to cause a FULL UNRECOVERABLE brick on your 3.71 M33-2 PSP.

    Symptoms:
You used USB flash access to write something to flash0/1/2/3, either in recovery or in VSH after re-routing USB. Although Dark_AleX fixed the bug that was present in 3.60 M33 and 3.71 M33-1 (which caused files larger than approx. 60kb to be corrupted), flash writing is still unreliable. It seems the nand partitioning is messed up after a USB flash write.

After flash access through USB, you either get an infinite BSOD or a PSP that doesn't boot at all. The PSP can't be recovered by Pandora or any of the Cemetery sticks!

    Precautions:
Don't use USB flash write access when on 3.71 M33-2 until further notice! If you did and you get a BSOD, don't press O! It will cause an infinite BSOD loop that can't be fixed. According to some reports in other threads, when you hard power off your PSP at the BSOD (power switch or battery out) you have a small chance to get the PSP booting again, but some things will not function since flash1 is not correctly initialized. Probably a "restore default settings" may fix this, otherwise, try the flash1 format from recovery.

    Solutions:
When you have a working full nand dump safely stored somewhere, use the Cemetery V3 stick to restore it to your PSP. On the fat, you can also use Cory's upNandTool or a similar tool, on the slim you can also use Cemetery V1 or V2. Don't try to use Pandora, because it does a logical restore and for this problem, you need a physical restore. Remember that it's impossible to restore any other PSP's nand dump, because you will screw up IDStorage beyond any repair!!!

When you don't have a nand backup but your PSP is a fat, get a nand backup from another PSP. It may be of any fw version, although only 1.50 will boot instantly. The important part is the partitioning, not the nand contents. Before doing anything to your bricked PSP, use Pandora or any Cemetery stick to create a full backup of your nand! Store it safely on your PC, and maybe a copy on another media. After making sure your nand backup is safe, use Cemetery V3 to restore the other nand dump. Pandora will not work because you need a physical restore, not a logical. When you restored a 1.50 dump, your PSP should now boot again. With any other firmware, it will still be a brick. You should now be able to use Pandora or Cemetery to unbrick it. All that remains is to restore your own IDStorage, or your PSP will be homebrew only. Use the dump you created from your own bricked PSP and Cory's upNandTool to restore IDStorage only without overwriting the other nand contents. Now your PSP should be fully functional again.

When you don't have a nand backup and your PSP is a slim, you're screwed. Restoring another PSP's nand dump won't work because of the protections Sony added to the slim on nand level, including signing and encryption. If you still want to give it a go, you can try the procedure described above for the fat. But use the 64M version of upNandTool instead. And only use another slim's nand dump, a fat's dump will definitely not work.

    FINAL WARNING !!!
Especially on the Slim, before doing anything that writes to your nand (including regular updates), create a nand dump! Store it on your PC and on another media and make sure it's safe! Currently it's your only chance of unbricking a full brick!

[EDIT] It seems to me that Sony is no longer afraid of bricking their customer's PSPs. My guess is that part of the nand protection they already put in the slim's hardware, has been incorporated into the 3.71 firmware, causing all kinds of corruptions whenever a flash write is done. Although it still could be a stupid bug... ...

Normally, the news that a study into the dangerousness of WiFi signals was to take place would provoke groans of disappointment from these pages: however, the British Government's statement that such a study is going to take place is a somewhat calming development. The Health Protection Agency, the group tasked with staging the study, will aim for the study to be "systematic" -- alternatively meaning "final," "definitive," and "complete" -- with all areas of potential dangerousness being investigated, with the opening remarks from the chief executive of the agency including affirmations that no evidence has previously been found that 2.4GHz WiFi frequencies cause danger. Schools will not turn off their routers while the study takes place, and the results are expected to be "reassuring." Sanity has won this battle it seems.

This project dedicated to bring you, Glide64 users, various advanced texture enhancements. The author of GlideHQ is famous Hiroshi ‘KoolSmoky’ Morii, well known as an author of 3dfx drivers and tools. I also must thank Rice for his indirect help – most of texture enhancement algorithms were taken from RiceVideo sources.

GlideHQ is a separate optional module. That is, Glide64 can work without it, if you don’t need texture enhancements. GlideHQ can apply various filters (smooth, sharp), enhancements (X2SAI, HQ4X etc) and compressions to input texture. Resulted texture is used instead of the original one.

To install and test GlideHQ, download GideHQ distributive and unpack it into Plugin folder. In Glide64 configuration dialog, open “Texture enhancement” tab and select options you like.

Current version is a prototype, based on Glide64 “WonderPlus”. That is, for end-users this is Glide64 “WonderPlus” with texture enhancements. Since it is a prototype, it can be buggy, slow, inconvenient and so on. Thus, we need your feedback to make it better.

    GlideHQ 0.4:
I've restricted memory cache to 128Mbytes. It will grow till it reaches 128mb and swap out old texture cache. The memory cache will be dumped to disk when you stop emulation and loaded when started. A "*.dat" file will be created for each game under .Plugincache. For now they will be saved uncompressed.

    GlideHQ 0.3:
I've added memory cache to cache filtered textures. Once a texture is filtered it will stay in the cache and be used until you exit emulation. For now only memory cache. In the Glide64 configuration dialog, open “Texture enhancement” and tick "Cache texture to system memory".

This Shenzhen Mymedia PMP, created by Game King, combines portable media with Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance and other Game Boy devices. As if looking like a Game Boy weren’t enough, it can actually play Game Boy and Game Boy Color games!

In addition to Game Boy games, it also supports 8-bit FC/NES. Now onto the PMP part of the player, it supports both video and audio. For video, MPEG-4 and AVI formats at 25fps; for audio, MP3, WMA, AMR, WAV, PCM and ADPCM audio files. Other formats include JPEG, GIF, BMP images and TXT. An unusual feature is that it can playback audio in male or female voices with 8 different sound effects. It can also act like a voice recorder and a mass storage device.

Additionally, it sports a 2.5 TFT LCD screen with a resolution of 320×240. It comes in a few different models including 512Mb, 1GB and 2GB, it can also be expanded by SD slot for an additional 2GB. However, no word on pricing or availability as of yet.
