    News/release from luislizard:

Hi, say hello to version v0.5 with theme manager, and an easier way to adding themes (now you can just throw the theme with any name you want in ms0:/themes)

To create screenshots for your themes:
--Take the screenshot of the theme
--Open it with paint and click Image then Resize/Skew
--In there set to resize both horizontal and vertical to 70%, click OK
--Then click File then Save As, and save it as a PNG
--Then place that file as screenshot.png in the theme's folder

    Features:
    -- Theme Manager NEW!!!
-- Automatic theme flashing at startup
-- Unlimited slots for saving themes
    -- Configuration menu
-- Dummy font flashing -- Frees 2.5 mb in Flash0
    -- Monthly theme cycling
    -- Original theme backup
-- Scripting improvement over last release

Files it can flash: (Requests accepted)
    --topmenu_plugin
    --opening_plugin
    --savedata_plugin
    --gameboot
    --system_plugin
    --background (01-12.bmp)
    --impose_plugin
    --premo_plugin
    --system_plugin_fg
    --system_plugin_bg
    --photo_plugin
    --game_plugin
    --sysconf_plugin
    --ltn0
    --visualizer_plugin
    --update_plugin
    --sysconf_plugin_about
    --savedata_utility
    --rss_suscriber
    --netplay_plugin
    --netconf_dialog
    --music_main_plugin
    --msvideo_main_plugin

    IMPORTANT:
-- In my past releases i received alot of complaints about why i didn't include the original sony files. I don't include them because it's illegal to do so, you have to get them by yourself, or if you run theme cycler with the original theme installed, it will make a backup of it.

-- If you have 3.40 then you need themes for 3.40, if you use one for another version it WILL NOT work.

-- You need to know the basics of flashing before using any flashing progams. Also, learn how to use the recovery mode before flashing anything.

-- To fix a semi-brick goto recovery mode and enable auto-boot. Reboot PSP and hold O, the configuration mode will load, then press "flash backup theme" and voila semi-brick fixed!

-- The README file is your friend, take a look at it before using.

-- if you want both autorun and the manual Cycle Theme function you need to set the 1.5 kernel to GAME since the boot folder has to be strictly at GAME, not GAME150.

-- DO NOT RENAME THE BOOT FOLDER, AND IT SHOULD BE LOCATED IN THE GAME FOLDER, NOT GAME150, NOT GAME340, IF YOUR ARE GOING TO USE AUTOBOOT.

I have made a version of the old Casio Calculator MG-880 game for the PSP. I wanted to include custom backgrounds for the game and a hi-score system, but unfortunately due to the PSP's Flash and Memory limitations I couldn't do those things. However I did include 3 lives in this version, as opposed to the 1 life in the PC version I made previously, and I have released a few different flavoured versions of the game.

    ------------------------------
    CONTROLS:
(you play the game by turning the PSP sideways)

    UP Arrow - Aim
    DOWN Arrow - Fire
    X Button - Start Game

    INSTRUCTIONS:
What you do is use the UP arrow to change your BASE to match any number, or INVADER, that is advancing towards you. Once you change your Base to that Invader number you press the DOWN arrow to destroy the Invader.

If you destroy 2 or more Invaders in a row that add up to 10, 20, 30 etc then you get a 'n', or Mother Ship, advancing towards you which you can then destroy for 150 points.

The closer the the right hand side of the screen the Invaders are when you destroy them the more points you get for each, eg. 80 points for an Invader in the first position on the right, then less 10 points each position closer to your Base (ie. 70, 60, 50, 40, 30, 20, 10.)

You have 3 lives which are displayed next to you by 3 lines next to your Base.

The game has 9 levels and each level the Invaders advance faster towards you. Once you get past the 9th level it goes back to level 1. It's pretty hard to get through the 7th, 8th or 9th levels though so it can take a while to do this.
    -------------------------------

Click on one of the game links below to Save the zip file to your computer, un-zip it and then place the game in any directory on you PSP and then use your PSP browser to Open the file. Each version of the game is between 170 - 220 KB in size.

Here is an example of the address you would enter if the game was placed in a Flash folder in the root directory of your PSP memory card:

    file:/flash/mg880-01.swf

Right-Click on one of the flavours of the game to Save-As (unless you want a large version of the game to pop up on your screen):

    Spider-Man 3
    Casino Royale
    Underworld
    TMNT
    300
    Republic Commando
    Aeon Flux
    Ultraviolet
    Keeley Hazell
    Falco 3

    ENJOY! ...

The Japanese site for Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers has an embedded video preview of the upcoming Wii title. The trailer features a sample of the game music and offers a look at a decidedly more "mature-looking" Crystal Chronicles. The main character appears to be a young blonde man and there are airships galore in the scenes. Combat and other graphics have a soft feel to them and avoid the dull browns and reds that were common in Final Fantasy XII. Check out the video at this link and to start the video just click on the image. ...

ahh its nice to actually sit at my laptop and do a bit of posting and with all the negativity from other sites towards consoles i thought it would be nice to remember what inspired us all to buy the Consoles we own.

Ill start myself and let others follow and either agree or disagree with my views.

    Sony PSP.

When i first received my PSP i was amazed at the graphics, PS2 Quality graphics on a handheld, the ability to play DVD Quality movies. The system really packed some major processing power for a handheld console. The possibility of games never seen before in the palm of your hand was amazing.

    Nintendo DS

Ive always been a Nintendo Fan and the game Mario 64 on DS promised Nintendo 64 graphics on a handheld. Graphics were better than GBA but on the first games not much difference, the area the DS really impressed me was the Dual Screen and the new avenues that opened up, the thought of games such as RTS and Sim games coming to the DS made it one of the most exciting consoles in a long time. Also playing the likes of Mario Kart on Wifi against anyone in the world is simply awesome.

    Nintendo Wii

The first time i spotted the E3 video of the Wiimote in action i knew that the Wii would be a new era in Video Games, the thought of playing sword games, golf games and the likes of the Star Wars lightsabre games with a wiimote had me drooling at the mouth. The promise of Worldwide Wifi gaming is also a massive factor.

    Xbox 360

The original Xbox was awesome for FPS games and ports of PC Classics to the console and the first time i seen an Xbox 360 game playing on a HD TV i was majorly impressed. The graphics were of a quality i had not seen before. The Xbox Live Network is another great plus for playing against people worldwide.

    PS3

The PS3 is more than just a console its an HD Multmedia Center and the games when playing via an HD TV look for sure from a different generation from the ones we are used to. Blueray films are amazing, the quality of the picture at 1080i is draw dropping.

Theres just a few of my thoughts about the current generation of mainstream video game consoles. Despite all the negativity we have systems that are bringing some incredible games into our homes and in a way we never dreamed of years ago.

Electronic Arts has been caught off-guard by the success of Nintendo's Wii, and analysts and investors share their thoughts on the company's future.

    Via Aussie Nintendo

Two years ago, Nintendo was being written-off left, right and centre, while stocks in the world's leading game-maker, Electronic Arts, soared to record highs, as sales neared the US$3 billion mark for the first time.

Nowadays, both analysts and investors are pondering the future of the company as it enters the next generation, and according to Todd Greenwald, a financial analyst with Nollenberger Capital Partners, "This transition does seem to be a bit more painful for EA." However he added, "EA is the 800-pound gorilla. They're always going to be dominant."

Much of the publisher's success in the past has come due to its support of Sony and its PlayStation 2, however, and given the fact that the PlayStation 3 isn't living up to expectations paints a grim picture for EA. "It has huge implications," said one unnamed analyst. "Nintendo will return to its historical position as the No. 1 hardware and software vendor and will leave everyone else fighting for second place."

EA spokesman Jeff Brown said EA is ramping up its support of both Wii and DS, though, with 10 to 13 games being prepared for Nintendo's new console this financial year. He also highlighted that last month, EA had the second-best-selling games on Wii, having been topped only by Nintendo itself.

Brown added that EA's management team is currently "discussing organizational changes," details of which could come as early as this week. "No other company in the industry has as many sails up as EA," he said. "When the wind starts filling those sails, you're going to see us move."

Billy Pidgeon, an analyst at IDC, said of the new rising of Nintendo: "This does even the playing field a little bit. Other (game makers) are geared toward the Nintendo platforms. We didn't anticipate the popularity of the Wii, but we moved very quickly to get into position on that." ...

After a brief hiatus, The Saturday Sunday Showdown continues. Each week we pick a topic, flip a coin to see which OT writer gets which side to debate, and then we present it to you. This week? Whether or not the PS3's ever-evolving firmware-powered feature list is going to be enough to increase sales.

Ben: My skepticism of the PS3 as a viable platform has become something of a running joke with Opposable Thumbs readers. With the initial release of the system, it was hard to take Sony's claims seriously. I kept asking myself, "You want this to be a media hub?" in the first few months of the system's release. This? PlayStation 2 games didn't look great, Blu-ray didn't work in 720p. It took forever to download anything, and you couldn't do anything else while you were pulling the files down. What a difference a few firmware updates make! Now the Blu-ray player works beautifully in 720p, PS2 and PSone games get upscaled up to 1080p, streaming media is a snap, background downloading works fine, and there is even some great content to download! We all knew that the system would get better, but with the newest firmware update, it's like a magic trick: the system Sony always wanted to release is now in our home theaters. Is this a selling point? Of course it is, as the games are getting better and the promises Sony made us are finally bearing fruit. I never told friends and family that buying a PS3 was a good idea before because I'm loathe to pay for potential. Now I can get excited about what the system can do RIGHT NOW.

Frank: Firmware updates (and patches) are both a blessing and a curse this time around. While these big updates can allow the developers to fix old problems and implement new functionalities, we can already see a trend of "half-finished" product releases that are simply "buffed out" later. Both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 suffer from this: they came out with a certain amount of functionality and a certain set of problems, and issues were ironed out over time. Don't get me wrong; I love the fact that the problems that arise via user feedback can be remedied. However, the problem that Sony faces is that they are repeating the same mistakes that Microsoft had already addressed; they learned nothing from the 360's failures. The background downloading, for one, should have shipped with the PS3. It's good that they finally patched it in, but why did it take so long? The same goes for the upscaling and some of the other fixes in the recent patch: the system is only getting around to having functionality it should have had already, rather than new functionality worth reconsidering the unit for. Thus, it's hard to look at these firmware upgrades as anything other than Sony racing to try and match functionality already evident on other units at a lower price.

Ben: So what? If you're a customer today and you have $600 in your greasy mitts, do you care if these things should have been there when the system shipped? Of course not. If you have a nice display and a good sound system, you're happy that they'll be so ably supported by the PS3 right now. Early adopters know the pain they're getting into, and so many gamers I talk to say that they want a PS3 but are waiting for certain features. Well, those features are finally coming; I know many who are now going to take the plunge. Sure, it's an expensive system, and while value-added things like the Blu-ray drive don't interest everyone, for A/V fiends they're huge. The PS3 is one of the cheapest Blu-ray players out there and with the additions of 720p play and improving options for how to display the image via HDMI, it's also one of the best. With this new firmware update, the system and Blu-ray play is functional enough to finally make it a selling point. If you took games away altogether, the other things (Blu-ray, media streaming, and 60GB hard drive) are a good value for $600. When the usage of these things was so hobbled, they were almost useless to many people. But now the PS3 is a very strong set top box at a very compelling price. I think we're going to see a sales spike in sales over the next month.

Frank: Right, but here's the thing. I'm a consumer, and I'm seeing that one unit—the 360—has a considerably more advanced feature set that encompasses everything that the PS3 boasts and more. I know that the patches are going to continue to come, and that the competition's unit will have increasingly advanced functionality while the PS3 is still catching up to the 360's already-established abilities. Unless Sony goes above and beyond somehow or approaches it from a different angle, then I don't see how the firmware can really push me to pick up a PS3 instead of something else. You're right in pin-pointing early adopters as the main benefactors of these updates, but really, on paper these new functionalities just level the playing field. ...

California is one of our great states that stays abreast of environmental issues and presents propositions to ensure a greener society. One proposition in particular, promotes clean drinking water with legislation to keep toxic chemicals out of consumer products. Well apparently, someone forgot to inform Costco that the PS3 console doesn't use gasoline and is packaged as a solid, which makes it impossible to consume as a liquid or get mixed in with the drinking water. According to this advertisement, Costco has included a reference to California's Proposition 65 in order to inform any prospective PS3 buyer that the console could be toxic because of its use of gasoline, a highly flammable (and not very tasty) fossil fuel. We've looked (twice) and haven't yet found a gas tank or opening marked "fuel" on our PS3. Now, we suppose there might be some funky materials under that sleek hood, but even so, the PS3 doesn't appeal to us as being edible. Anyone else find a gas tank included in their PS3, or dreamt of a PS3 between two slices of rye with lettuce? Please, do tell.
