EA has bounced a new demo for NBA Live 08 onto the cheesy-smelling floor of Xbox Live.

It hits the scales at a trim 563MB, and will let you grow a few inches to see what EA has improved this year.

You might notice the better ball handling, for example, or enjoy the refined shooting and trick controls. But then there's always those new signature moves to pull off, or the better Live integration to try out - not to mention better looks and smarter physics.

It all sounds as though EA has learned from the rushed efforts it has produced for the last two years running, which have made it increasingly hard for us to recommend any but 2K's consistently well polished efforts.

NBA Live 08 is coming to 360, PS3, Wii, PS2 and PSP on 5th October. We'll let you know our thoughts closer to the time. ...

Ubisoft has remained tight-lipped over rumours that Red Steel is getting a sequel.

It was answering speculation that spun off the pages of Official Nintendo Magazine, whose preview of next month's big feature was based around Japanese writing symbolic of the action game.

Scans of the pages in question read "Your Move, Young Grasshopper...", and "Bigger. Better. Bolder. Bloodier", before revealing it will uncover the first screens and give hands-on impressions of the mysterious game.

ONM never gives outright mention of Red Steel 2, or confirms the feature is based on it. But it would support evidence from late last year, when Ubisoft was hiring game designers to help continue the series.

Red Steel launched alongside the Wii last December, fetching largely middling reviews. It put you in the shoes of an American trying to infiltrate the notorious Yakuza in a search for his fiancée, pitching lots of gang members between you and your objective.

The idea is to either shoot them in the head to stop them moving, or get up close and swish a sword around to stop them moving - all with those motion-sensing controls. ...

Black Slim and Lite still launching this month

Sony has denied reports retailers will not be receiving official TV cables for the new PSP Slim and Lite model when it launches in the UK on September 14 - but admitted that the white model has been delayed.

The claims were made in an article on CVG.com earlier this week, which cited an official spokesman for GAME stores as the source of the news.

However, when contacted by GamesIndustry.biz, a Sony spokesman confirmed that the official cables will be available alongside the PSP Slim and Lite at launch.

The spokesperson did concede that only the black version of the new PSP will be available on September 14. The 'ceramic white' PSP Slim and Lite will follow in October.

The TV cables allow PSP users to play PSP games and UMD videos on TV sets, a major new feature of the revised PSP hardware. ...

Atari has told Eurogamer this afternoon that the PS3 version of Alone in the Dark hasn't been delayed after all, but will launch simultaneously with the PC and 360 games.

The PS3 version didn't appear on the publisher's most recent release schedule and a spokesperson told us in response to a follow-up query that "[the 360 and PC versions] are the first to be released".

But now Atari has explained it's all been a misunderstanding - and AitD PS3 should have been listed on the schedule all along.

Alone in the Dark is yet to be given a solid launch date, and currently swims in the crocodile infested waters of "Coming Soon Financial Year 2007/08", which could mean any time between now and next March.

We'll let you know when it re-emerges. Chomp. ...

Sony has confirmed our suspicions by revealing that the recent firmware upgrade for PS3 had no effect on European consoles.

The version 1.92 patch was released to tinker with stability and compatibility issues with US and Japanese games only, we were told.

"All the changes in the firmware update were for the US and Japan, and actually had no effect for us in Europe," a spokesperson for Sony Europe told Eurogamer.

We now feel a little silly for staying up all night trying to work out what had changed. ...

Sony has confirmed that the rumoured new PlayStation 3 starter pack is genuine - but the bundle is only intended for the French market.

An image surfaced yesterday of a starter pack that replaced Motorstorm and Resistance with Heavenly Sword and F1 Championship Edition. At the time, Sony declined to comment.

In a clarifying statement, a Sony spokesperson has now said: "The choice of which titles to include in the Starter Pack, and the freedom to change the titles is up to the individual markets based on their unique market conditions."

"The F1 and Heavenly sword pack is only being introduced in France for the time being, and will be available from the launch of Heavenly Sword in France on 19th September." ...

One of the few hundred thousand that dropped 600 bones for an 8GB iPhone instead of the moderately more palatable $399? It's alright, Nokia still hearts you, and they want to prove it. Espoo wasted no time after yesterday's announcement in taking out Google ads encouraging disheartened, empty-walleted iPhone owners to check out its new MOSH service -- a collaborative mobile media site run by the phone giant -- to "salvage" their devices. With all due respect, Nokia, no amount of free content is going to put $200 back into our pockets, but we appreciate the thought nonetheless. ...
